Didn't see that coming?! I know her popularity has dipped somewhat, but I didn't think she'd leave before the election? wondering if she was being pushed out?

What’s your take Socrates?

😂😂😂👍🏻

Gingerodgers · 19/01/2023 08:06

Well I’ll be sorry to see her go. I’d describe myself as a left leaning swing voter, and I do feel that labours time in government is coming to an end, although I’d prefer 1 more term with Jacinda at the helm. She was absolutely what our country needed over the past 5years, and I feel thankful that it was her leading NZ during such turbulent times. I would like to thank her for her contribution, and wish her well.

I am in New Zealand too. Leaving her track record aside , the level of misogyny towards her was horrendous and can only be compared to what Julia Gillard experienced in Australia. I honestly don't understand female right wing supporters and, especially, politicians - e.g the fairly reasonable sounding Nicola Willis. Do they not see that?

Doesn’t she believe that men can become women though?

CallItLoneliness · 19/01/2023 08:34

To the posters criticising Ardern for resigning just before an election: I suspect you would criticise her whenever she resigned. Had she led the party through the election and won, it would have been "how dare she make false promises?". If she resigned after losing the election she would be a sore loser. If she resigned mid term, she would be not getting the job done. So when, exactly is she allowed to resign, in your view?

I’m in NZ. I’m a Labour voter.

This was absolutely coming. Called it last year.

This is categorically not out of nowhere.

Long overdue. Her blatant failings and incompetence were laid bare long ago. Only her inflated ego has kept her in this post for so long. Hopefully now NZ can begin the long road to improvement.

maddy68 · 19/01/2023 08:49

I am sorry to see her go. She is an inspirational leader on so many levels.

The last few years have been tough for her. It's not easy having a baby while in power and she showed the world that that's possible. But really must have been difficult

magicthree · 19/01/2023 08:54

lljkk · 19/01/2023 07:52

Ooh, that kicked off.
All I know is that a lot of the NZ public messaging (tv and radio adverts) during lockdowns was very much "You MuST report your neighbours if they do wrong". The TV news would open with stories about people who violated social contact. It seemed very obsessive and Big Brother, and divisive. That's when I soured on JA.

NZers are saying they aren't surprised. Just a surprise to rest of world worried about other things.

Really? I live in NZ and don't recall seeing any public messaging telling me I MUST report my neighbours!!!

Plenty of posters on MN saying it however .......

FiveShelties · 19/01/2023 09:02

@magicthree

I live in NZ too and could not remember being told to report people, but I did find this link to report people. I wonder how many people people were actually reported?

From my outside perspective in. She made NZ look progressive and she seemed brilliant. Sitting here with Boris at the helm and seeing her being interviewed I was hugely envious.

can’t blame her, it’s a shit job more so for a woman

Absolutely love this! And oh so true.

Obviously don't know the ins and outs of NZ politics as live in the UK, but I'd take Jacinda any day over the corrupt, greedy, incompetent Tory PMs we've had to endure this past decade.
What is the press situation in NZ? Does Murdoch own any of the media? Does NZ have daily mail/ express/ sun/ telegraph equivalents with billionaire media barons controlling the narrative that the population then blindly follow?

They recently been giving lots of libertarian billionaires passports so more BS is coming their way once the billionaires use their money to bend the country to their will.

Speaking as someone who has lived there, NZ is far from progressive.

HRTQueen · 19/01/2023 10:11

I would rather leaders did step down if they felt they are now longer up to the position as it’s incredibly stressful.

as for her politics I think we in the UK often have a rosey view of leaders in others countries because use we like some of their policies but we are not living under their policies. It’s the same world wide politics is divisive but the everyday politics that impact peoples lives is often very different to what is reported in other countries

paintitallover · 19/01/2023 10:28

I'm with @eatsleeppaddle !

shiningcuckoo · 19/01/2023 10:31

I don't remember any TV or radio ads telling people to 'report their neighbours'. And the only news story I recall about someone breaking lockdown was the then health minister David Clark who drove to a beach 20 kms away and lost his ministerial portfolio as a result. Media is NZ is much more tame than in the UK, with online news coming from Stuff, who also own some newspapers. Stuff is NZ owned after a management buy out a couple of years ago. From what I can gather, News Corp is only vaguely interested in NZ, with an NZ news section in the Australian, which of course no one here reads. The only paper that is even vaguely close to a tabloid is the Sunday Star Times - it's mainly a lifestyle newspaper and is very Auckland centric. I live in the SI and I don't know anyone who reads it.

shiningcuckoo · 19/01/2023 10:36

@Annabel073 Incompetence? If you are looking to Christopher Luxton for a show of competence, you are going to be very disappointed. He'll struggle to put on a show of intelligence as well - did you see the debate where JA took him apart with absolute ease? Shooting fish in a barrel came to mind.

After the election that’s when she should resign, win or lose. It’s v poor form to land the party in it like this now.

Wasn’t she meant to be very good? Can we have her as prime minister here in the UK please?!?

She did well out of New Zealand being a remote island during the pandemic.

Moonmelodies · 19/01/2023 12:13

Not much point her coming to rule the UK if she has 'nothing left in the tink'.

I doubt she would be PM here anyway. Unless she joined the Tories and became the leader, it’s not going to happen.

JocelynBurnell · 19/01/2023 13:39

Jacenda Ardern problems were caused economic factors the NZ.

In NZ, GDP grew by just 2.0% from the second quarter in the three months to September 2022.

Meanwhile, on the UK, GDP fell by 0.3% in the three months to November 2022.

Riverlee · 19/01/2023 13:52

An interesting insight into New Zealand, which like @Westfacing said, always seems a quiet, peaceful country from a UK perspective, and people emigrate there to avoid potential violence and gun culture!

I don’t know anything about NZ politics. However, a distance NZ relative has occasionally posted stuff about the Māoris over the last few months. Can’t remember exactly what, but the general vibe I think is unfair favouritism. Is this what you all mean by causing splits in opinions and a disrupted country?
