Help needed on when it was studied please mumsnetters.

I need:

  1. level of study eg. Gcse/higher
  2. year of exam
  3. subject eg drama or English Literature
  4. board eg AQA, if known

Thank you

p.s. if anyone knows how I can find out when/where this was studied historically too that would be great.

I apologise for all the typos - poor light and phone.

Mybestusername · 19/01/2023 17:56

My daughter is studying it now, Alevel Eng lit

TellMeWhere · 19/01/2023 18:00

Didn't study it for 2002 GCSEs or 2004 A levels, or at any other point during secondary school. No idea which exam board - edexcel or Aqa probably.

I studied it for English lit GCSE in 2007. Can’t remember exam board

TheIsaacs · 19/01/2023 18:04

Mid 2000’s at A level. We read the whole book and it was compared with other dystopian novels.

JoanThursday · 19/01/2023 18:10

I studied it in the 3rd year in 1984!

Ds is reading it now and he's in y9. Same copy, in fact. (Clearly never handed it back 😬)

SockQueen · 19/01/2023 18:12

I studied it in English in year 9, 1997/8. Not in any formal exams.

TribeD · 19/01/2023 18:18

level of study - GCSE
year of exam - 1990
subject - English Literature
board - Not a clue

burnoutbabe · 19/01/2023 18:36

Gcse in 1989 -English literature.

No idea of exam board!

burnoutbabe · 19/01/2023 18:37

Actually scrap that, we did animal farm! I liked that one!

I remember my year 5 teacher talking about it in 1985, and why it was called 1984. He may have read extracts from it, but I don't recall.
We did lots of books with him from "Winnie the Pooh" (he loved that) through to classics like "Prisoner of Zenda" and "The 39 Steps". He sometimes wrote shorter versions as well. We did Macbeth and Pygmalion and other plays like that.

I then think we read it in year 10, about 1990 along with "Animal Farm". I remember finding it quite disappointing.
Ds is studying "Animal Farm" currently in year 11. I think they've referenced "1984" a few times because he's quite fond of saying "It's like 1984 all over again" if he's told he can't do something. 🤣
So I bought him a copy for Christmas.

He's currently planning on developing a school children's union with all children nationally (he asked me how to call a closed shop!) basically as far as I can tell because fizzy drink has just been banned from their school cafeteria. He's going to call a strike once he's got this union in place until they get fizzy drinks back. He says the union needs to focus on important issues at hand.
He doesn't even buy fizzy drinks from school.

Studied it in English between 1970 and 1977. Sorry can’t be more precise than that.

PuppaDontPreach · 19/01/2023 19:12

GCSE 2022. Can't remember the board but could look it up if it's important.

Gufo · 19/01/2023 19:12

High school
Early 90s, not sure if for GCSE coursework or not (MEG exam board)

Gufo · 19/01/2023 19:12

And it would have been for English Lit

mrwalkensir · 19/01/2023 19:14

1984 JMB o level

CriticalAlert · 19/01/2023 19:16

I did 1984 for O level English literature 1973. Oxford examining board.
Great book. I studied tons of Orwell at university English degree. I can't imagine a university saying that it was too upsetting! How can good literature be deemed upsetting? What are they reading now, Enid Blyton? No wonder no one has a political thought in this country!!!!!

berrypop · 19/01/2023 19:19

GCSE English Lit 1998. Think exam board was Edexcel

Highabovethetrees · 19/01/2023 19:21
  1. A-level
  1. 2001
  1. English Literature (was part of a dystopia trilogy paper, together with Brave New World and Handmaid's Tale).
  1. Either OCR or AQA!

Am intrigued as to why you're asking?

Leeds2 · 19/01/2023 19:27

I studied it for English Literature O Level. exam taken in 1982. Probably JMB Board, but can't be certain.

Gufo · 19/01/2023 19:32

Ignore my comment - we read Animal Farm not 1984!

SandyIrvine · 19/01/2023 19:35

O grade
1982
English
Scottish (predecessor to SQA)

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 19/01/2023 19:39

I used it as one of the titles in my comparative essay submission for A Level English Lit. in the mid 1990s. Still a big favourite of mine, and a hugely important book.
