If you enjoy a drink

If you think you have a healthy relationship with alcohol, how much do you drink on average per week. Also how many days do you drink per week.
I ask as I was having a conversation with a friend who said a heavy night for her and her partner involved sharing 4 bottles of wine. The other people in the group didn’t seem surprised and said things like, yes we drink a bit too much too.
I know I am a light drinker but the odd time over Christmas where I had a whole bottle of wine I was wrecked and then didn’t drink for several days, so maybe I am the odd one?

You'd think so, but nope not in my experience, not without name-changing anyhow. It becomes a pile on of people telling the poster they are an alcoholic. Alcohol threads rarely end well!

This thread in particular asked for the experience of those who think they have a healthy relationship with alcohol though. I doubt people who drink far above the recommended amount or drink every day would think they have a particularly healthy relationship with alcohol, therefore probably wouldn’t bother to respond.

I could drink a bottle and feel fine but ready for bed.
1.5 and that would be a hangover
2 would be a monstrous hangover.

I don't consider myself to have an issue with drink but I do enjoy a drink and putting the world to rights. You can't put the world to rights over a small glass of baileys.

I put the world to rights roughly once a week.

Drink 3-4 days a week. Pint after choir practice, a g&t when we get home on Friday then either share a bottle of wine with dinner or go out, couple of pints on Saturday at the pub if we go to watch a band, glass of wine with dinner on Sunday some weeks but not always

@WaddleAway i do think there are people who delude themselves into thinking their drinking is normal whilst drinking far more than the recommended amount. 14 units isn’t even 2 bottles of wine, I’ll bet lots of people drink more than that.

Yes I agree. I was just pointing out that this thread isn’t likely to attract heavy drinkers.

gettingolderandgrumpier · 17/01/2023 14:23

i drink a lot less than I used to mainly because I was trying to loose weight and it’s empty calories.
if I drink a bottle of wine it’s over the course of a evening from 6pm with dinner to 11-11.30 . If I drink more than that a bottle I actually feel a bit sick . I really can’t do hangovers anymore and I’m out this weekend so I’ll probably alternate alcohol/ soft drinks which I would have laughed at one time .
saying that I do enjoy a nice glass of wine and i like to keep some in when I feel like a glass .
so how much I drink a week depends some weeks a couple of glasses all week others 2 or 3 bottle’s depending on if I go out .

worstusernameeverx2 · 17/01/2023 14:24

Me and dp will be quite drunk on 1 bottle each, which we do maybe once a month. Very occasionally we'll have a night out and have a few shots and spirit mixers and get very very drunk- maybe twice a year?

TexLex · 17/01/2023 14:36

Definitely a bit too much.

Don't drink in the week ( apart from holidays, Christmas, special occasions) but Friday to Sunday will have at least half a bottle a night. Realistically, more like a bottle on either Friday and Saturday. We normally like to go out for a couple before dinner and then share a bottle when we get home, so yeah....definitely more like a bottle I guess.

I could say, but it's okay because we have healthy diets, don't have other vices etc, but I know it's too much.

Rosio · 17/01/2023 15:22

I have a drink 3 or 4 evenings a week. Only 1 unless it's Saturday night then probably 2.
Glass of rose/ can of cider usually. Sometimes a large gin and lemonade on a weekend

AtLeastThreeDrinks · 17/01/2023 15:30

Four bottles!! I would be so sick the next day. I get raging hangovers so even when I drink I tend to do so early so there’s recovery time before bed and I’ll drink a lot of water at the same time.

I’ll often have a beer or a glass of wine on a Friday and Saturday evening. H doesn’t drink so it’s not a shared pleasure! I have an alcoholic in the family which I think makes me worry about behaviours around drinking. I don’t like being drunk at home on my own, but will happily share a bottle with a friend over dinner. I was drinking daily during lockdown but more as a bookend to the workday than a pressing need. It was just something to do! Once I became aware of that I stopped it.

I remember reading that the queen would have a cocktail every evening and I quite like the sound of that.

hazelnutlatte · 17/01/2023 15:37

I drink 2-3 nights a week but it's usually only 1 glass of wine or maybe a gin and tonic. If socialising I would have more than this but be pretty unwell if I tried to drink a whole bottle of wine.
I've always had a low tolerance to alcohol though - I have friends who can drink 2 bottles of wine in one night and while I don't think that's healthy I also don't think that they have an alcohol problem.

AuntieMarys · 17/01/2023 15:40

We drink 2 -3 days a week, usually start about 3pm and finish at 7pm. That could be a couple of bottles of wine one day, gin the next and then just one bottle ( between us).

LostAtTheCrossRoad · 17/01/2023 15:43

I think I have a healthy relationship with alcohol. I drink a measured double g&t four nights a week, occasionally I'll have a second double maybe one of those nights. I only drink wine if we're out for a meal, maybe four times a year, then it's usually prosecco and yes, we'll have normally two bottles between us. That tends to give me a significant hangover though! Christmas is heavier admittedly, probably a bottle of fizz each a day over say 12hrs a day, three or four days in the trot.

But fundamentally I would have zero problem giving up alcohol completely. And that's the thing really, isn't it? I drink because I choose to, not because of a compulsion of any description.

What is a small glass of Baileys? 😀

Namechangenoidea · 17/01/2023 18:40

I rarely have alcohol at home. Only if I go out for dinner, about once a month. And Ill have on average about 3 glasses of wine- if Im in great company maybe more. I just dont ever have the urge to drink at home, to me its a social thing.

mamaduckbone · 17/01/2023 18:57

On a normal week, I don't drink at all Monday to Friday, might have a couple of glasses of wine on a Friday and Saturday night - dh and I sometimes finish a bottle between us in an evening but not always.
Obviously it's more than that if we have guests or go out, and on holiday.
2 bottles of wine in an evening and I would be wrecked.

Minfilia · 17/01/2023 19:11

1-2 bottles a week each. I aim just for one but sometimes if it’s been a stressful day, I just think fuck it!

one full bottle gives me a hangover though, 2 bottles and I’d be half dead!

HideTheCroissants · 17/01/2023 19:25

Most weekend nights DH and I will share a bottle of wine. Don’t generally drink on a work night but we are meeting friends in the local micro pub later so will probably have a couple of pints.

Lostmyway86 · 17/01/2023 19:28

A couple of glasses a wine probably 4 nights a week. To unwind after work and getting two toddlers to bed. I will drink more than that if a night out planned but don't actually enjoy more than that. Also prefer drinking to unwind and de-stress which I feel a glass of wine or 2 max does. Anymore and I don't really enjoy it much.

Hoppinggreen · 17/01/2023 19:29

I drink maybe once a week but not every week. When I do it’s 2 glasses of wine max or I feel rough
