If you enjoy a drink

If you think you have a healthy relationship with alcohol, how much do you drink on average per week. Also how many days do you drink per week.
I ask as I was having a conversation with a friend who said a heavy night for her and her partner involved sharing 4 bottles of wine. The other people in the group didn’t seem surprised and said things like, yes we drink a bit too much too.
I know I am a light drinker but the odd time over Christmas where I had a whole bottle of wine I was wrecked and then didn’t drink for several days, so maybe I am the odd one?

I have maybe one G&T during the week, if that (and I do measure them) and a couple on Friday and Saturday night, or white wine instead. Half a bottle on a Friday and half a bottle on a Saturday. I stick to the recommended units per week basically. Calorie counting helps - I only want to use up so many of them on alcohol! Also Nutracheck counts the units for me. The only time I have more is on holidays or at Christmas.

In the past I had phases of having 20-30 units a week (easily done) it but at that level I can feel it affecting my overall health, mood, sleep. I get a lot more colds and bugs if I drink that much too and generally just feel a bit shit. I did the Drinkaware app for a little while which helped me drink less. Also had several months without drinking at all.

I only usually have one or two alcoholic drinks of an evening when I do drink- after that you are just chasing the pleasant effect of the first two drinks. More than that and it affects my sleep now. I'd rather have a good sleep. At the level I drink there is no discernible difference from being teetotal for me - apart from that wine and gin add to the general enjoyment of life.

We tend to share a bottle of wine over an a weekend evening. We might do that on a Friday and Saturday so 2 bottles over the weekend between 2 people. We don’t drink during the week unless out for a meal/special occasion.

If I go out I might have a pre-dinner drink like a cocktail or G&T and then share a bottle of wine over a meal. I don’t tend to drink much more than half a bottle of wine plus one other drink.

BarrelOfOtters · 17/01/2023 10:53

A bottle of wine each would be a heavy night for us and if we did that it would be with dinner and over a number of hours. And we might have a brandy after. But it wouldn't be desperately unusual if we were out for the night together or away on holiday we might do that a couple of times.

Out with friends - again a bottle of wine each over a number of hours wouldn't be desperately unusual but it's once in a blue moon these days.

On a normal weekend night we'd probably share a bottle and I'd have a glass more that DH.

2 bottles each would be a lot for me!

I've managed more than one bottle of wine with food but I don't think I've actually ever quite managed two in my life in one sitting. That would be huge hangover/throwing up levels of alcohol consumption for me.

CornishGem1975 · 17/01/2023 10:58

I have a glass or two of wine most days (I say 'or two' as the glasses I pour myself at home are smaller and probably more like a one large but I tend to pour two tiny ones). It's about one bottle per 3 nights. Except maybe on a Sunday when we're having a roast dinner and it will probably be a bit more spread throughout afternoon/evening.

Colourmix · 17/01/2023 11:06

I go out about once a month with the girls and get fairly drunk and I might have a couple of themed cocktails at family events or Christmas (if dp is happy staying sober to watch our 4yo) but I don’t drink alcohol when I’m just sat in the house alone with dp. It’s just never occurred to me to do so I guess, evenings are my relaxing time.

AlwaysAReason · 17/01/2023 11:22

I don't like wine, which I think helps a lot! I'd never drink a glass, let alone a whole bottle.
I rarely drink at all these days, but I'd probably have a good 5 measures of vodka with a mixer I was going out for an evening.

Sunnydayz · 17/01/2023 11:29

I love a drink and in my younger days would drink to excess.. all night, occasional black outs, stinking hangover the next day.

I’m in my 30’s and I never do it now. Even after a few drinks I can exert some self control and slow down, or stop.

I have friends and family members that once they start can’t stop. So for them it’s all or nothing.

If drinking alone or with partner at home, I’d usually do half a bottle of wine in an evening, and finish the bottle another night.

If I was out with friends, socialising I’d probably drink a bottle, and have a couple shorts/shots.

I still enjoy the buzz but don’t like getting blind drunk where I usually make a tit of myself!

Lkydfju · 17/01/2023 11:36

A bottle of wine lasts me 3 days although pre children probably two days; I try not to drink 4 nights a week

YerAWizardHarry · 17/01/2023 10:07

I am a stereotypical binge drinker. Don’t drink at all unless I’m going “out” around once a month and then I will have A LOT of cocktails/gins/shots etc

This is me. Feel like death for a day or two. Don’t know why I do it!

Ohgoodyanotherone · 17/01/2023 11:47

I have a bottle of wine over the weekend. Strangely, if I'm going out I don't drink alcohol at all.

PanicAtTheBigTesco · 17/01/2023 12:28

Friday - at home, bottle of wine and possibly 1 or 2 gins depending on how I feel

Saturday - we generally go out for a meal then a few drinks and I'll drink a similar amount to a Friday, normally 2 glasses of wine with dinner then a few Proseccos/gins/cocktails. I probably have a 'heavy' night once

I'm trying to lose weight so I've cut down to only one night a week so it would be either of the above depending on if we are out on a Saturday night or not. I never drink at home during the week but if I'm out for a meal during the week may or may not have some wine then, although I generally offer to drive instead as I'm just not bothered about drinking during the week.

PanicAtTheBigTesco · 17/01/2023 12:30

That should have said a heavy night once in a while, where I'll have 1-1.5bottlea of wine plus gins/shots/something else I'll regret. I can't deal with the hangovers though so that's normally 2-3 times a year max!

MrsJBaptiste · 17/01/2023 12:47

I'm currently in the middle of Dry January so probably not the best time to look at this thread as I really fancy a cold glass of wine now!

I can easily get through a bottle of white and maybe another glass but that would be my limit for wine and I'd have to move onto gin or cocktails. Whereas prosecco can be never ending, and with the girls, we could easily get through 8 bottles between the four of us with or without cocktails depending on the day/night.

Not great I know, but it's not every week and I eat well, exercise and don't smoke so I need to have one vice! Luckily as I've got older, I don't really get hangovers so am happy to get up reasonably early and sweat it out in the gym the next morning (before doing it all again the next night...!)

SmileWithADimple · 17/01/2023 12:49

I'm a social drinker. I rarely drink at home and never more than a glass of wine, but if we go out I may drink a bottle. That's only a few times a year though.

Lcb123 · 17/01/2023 12:55

I usually have a bottle of wine over the weekend (over 3 nights) then nothing in the week. Maybe one drink if I’m out for dinner in the week

mondaytosunday · 17/01/2023 13:05

Couple bottles over the weekend. Didn't drink hardly at all until I had kids in my 40s and certainly never drank in my own! I do now though.

mast0650 · 17/01/2023 13:13

Hmmm. Roughly once a week I will be out or have people round for dinner and have about half a bottle of wine. Plus on a couple of other nights I might have a glass, or at most two. Occasionally the equivalent of more like a bottle of wine on one evening, but that's fairly rare.

xogossipgirlxo · 17/01/2023 13:17

Small glass of wine once a week or 2x a month. I'm not a big drinker, I realise that. I think I would puke after bottle of wine, because I'm not used to have this much alcohol.

BigBangSmallBang · 17/01/2023 13:22

Interesting, most people seem to have a similar view to me about what is normal/healthy amount to have regularly. I was beginning to think everyone else was secretly downing wine by the bottle on a regular basis and I was the odd one out just drinking a few glasses a couple of times a week.

Ah but MN is not reality. Quite often on threads if you were to admit to drinking every day, you'd be told you had an alcohol problem.

tantrumingcoldchild · 17/01/2023 13:33

I feel that I drink more than is healthy. I normally have one large glass of wine a few days a week and will share a bottle or two with my boyfriend over the weekend.

If I were to drink as much as your friends, I would probably be laid up in bed entirely immobile for the entire next day and perhaps longer.

BigBangSmallBang · 17/01/2023 13:43

@CornishGem1975 surely people are more likely to admit it here than in real life though. Plus I do think drinking everyday is a problem, your liver needs a break.

You'd think so, but nope not in my experience, not without name-changing anyhow. It becomes a pile on of people telling the poster they are an alcoholic. Alcohol threads rarely end well!

TheLastDreamOfTheOak · 17/01/2023 13:56

I don't drink in the week at all really unless out for dinner which is rare. Every other weekend when we don't have the kids DH and I go out and we drink loads tbh. And then probably have a couple of wines on the Sunday as well.
