Where to live near Hinckley

DS (single, early 20's) has just got a new job in Hinckley. We're from further south and don't know the area at all. He's looking for somewhere to live.

Any recommendations for areas that he should check out?

Hinckley is okay, affordable with a small town centre. Burbage is close by, nicer but more expensive.

Nuneaton is a bit further away (about 20 minutes) but not a great area.

If his job is in Hinckley he may as well look for somewhere to live in Hinckley as well.

NoEffingWay · 16/01/2023 21:06

Hinckley itself is okay, lots of shops, pubs etc. It's not too expensive and has improved over the past decade.

Earl Shilton is cheaper and nearby. Burbage is nice but more expensive.

Leicester is the nearest town and is well serviced by regular and cheap trains-and has much more to it than Hinckley but obviously is further away.

Hinckley is also close to Enderby, Blaby, Whetstone, Narborough and Littlethorpe-about 15 mins by car but all are nice places to live and are close to both Leicester and Hinckley so are well placed. All of those are close to the motorway, the big shopping centre (Fosse Park), supermarkets and the cinema etc.

Thanks. I've posted him a link to the thread so he can keep an eye on it himself.

Depending on his budget the Blaby district may be out price wise due to the proximity to the city centre, motorway networks, countryside and leisure activities.

Glen Parva and South Wigston are slightly cheaper, South Wigston has a train station with services to Hinckley.

VittysCardigan · 16/01/2023 22:26

There are regular dedicated buses to the Hinkley site from a lot of the surrounding areas. Minehead, Weston super Mare & more.

VittysCardigan · 16/01/2023 22:27

The buses run pretty much 24 hours

katystar · 16/01/2023 22:31

Stoney Stanton, Broughton Astley and Lutterworth are also local

I think you’re thinking of Hinkley Point. Hinckley is in Leicestershire.

VittysCardigan · 16/01/2023 22:41

Lololol oops. Ignore me in that case

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 16/01/2023 23:09

I live in Leicester, loads of public transport via bus or train to Hinckley. If he looks around Narborough rd, Hinckley Rd, Braunstone gate there are lots of student types areas, so younger market, bars/restaurants and on the bus route.

PensionPuzzle · 16/01/2023 23:19

Leicester into Hinckley is an easy drive/bus/train and obviously lots more going on in the city, but Hinckley itself is fine too, perfectly decent place to live. There are a few less desirable roads and areas but none of them are awful and they are easy enough to spot when house hunting. The Hollycroft estates are decent and well located, some of the more outlying, newer estates are nice but a bit of a slog to get into and out of town.

From a travel point of view I'd avoid Rugby Road and the roads into town that way, not for any reason other than the roads get snarled up so it's hard to get out of the side roads. I'd also avoid living in the very centre of town just because there's no real benefit to doing so unless you like noise etc.

Driving in from Nuneaton would get tedious very quickly I think but there some nice villages over that way. Basically there's not much to get wrong as even the less desirable bits of Hinckley are still pretty average!

I also got confused over this. I was going to ask the op what sort of job as I know lots of accommodation specifically for Hinckley point workers

happynewyear55 · 16/01/2023 23:45

I grew up in Hinckley.

I'd personally look around burbage, market bosworth(if into village/country), and if you want to look further our maybe somewhere like desford. I'd AVOID barwell, earl shilton, Nuneaton and braunstone.

Everybodywants · 17/01/2023 00:41

What sort of lifestyle does he like?

If he wants to be in the city to go out frequently then living in Leicester may suit.

If he fancies a quieter life with a nice place to live then there are lots of villages where he can live close by with plenty of rentals. Narborough/Enderby worth a look. Both quiet but with a shop/local pubs/petrol stations etc.

If he likes a gym the David Lloyd at Narborough area is really nice one but pricey.

Lutterworth is a pleasant market town with all the supermarkets and some independent shops and bars.

Market Bosworth is your posher end not much going on but no trouble there.

MEgirl · 17/01/2023 01:03

Thanks for all of your suggestions. It's a great information for him to start with. He's adaptable so I'm sure he'll settle despite being a city boy at heart.

Could I muscle in here (sorry OP!) with a question about Hinckley for those in the know?

After renting for years we are happily now in the position where we can finally buy a property, it will hopefully be our forever home. We have family in Coventry and Leicester (and DP works in Leicester) and were thinking of buying in either Hinckley or Nuneaton, as both these towns are in between Coventry and Leicester, which will be quite convenient. Also, we were pleased to discover that house prices in Hinckley and Nuneaton are very reasonable, cheaper than either Leicester or Coventry. There are also the nearby villages, but as I do not drive I think it would be better to be in a town with a railway station.

Can I ask, what is wrong with Nuneaton? I see people have made disparaging comments about it. I am not familiar with it, but it looks OK on Google maps streetview. Quite nice looking old buildings in the town centre. There seem to be a lot of new estates. Which side of the town is better and why, does anyone know? There's also Bulkington and Bedworth, are they just villages?

And Hinckley, again not really familiar, there seem to be more older houses (1930s?) available here. They often have big gardens, which does appeal to me. Are there any parts of Hinckley to be avoided and why? There seem to be a lot of houses available in the areas of Westfield Road and Strathmore Road, and I see a big piece of empty land just south of here, it is something to do with development that might be taking place there?

Also I hear that Burbage is more 'sought after' but it seems to be a suburb of Hinckley, where does Burbage officially begin?

Thanks to anyone who could shed any light.

hockeysticks89 · 18/01/2023 20:00

@SecondSleep St Nicolas Park, Long Shoot, Whitestone and to a lesser extent horeston grange and crowhill are all nice areas

SecondSleep · 18/01/2023 20:27

@hockeysticks89 thanks, so this is Nuneaton?

@hockeysticks89 thanks, so this is Nuneaton?

Yes. There's lots of new build developments and more to come but house prices are reasonable and there's plenty going on, good transport links etc

SecondSleep · 18/01/2023 21:18

Anyone know about Hinckley?

happynewyear55 · 19/01/2023 19:29

@SecondSleep
Hinckley is above the train bridge, and burbage is below. Burbage is more popular as it's 'posher'- has a better reputation. If you're looking to avoid areas with a bad reputation in Hinckley I'd avoid anywhere around Tudor Road, Wykin Estate, or the New builds opposite maple drive KFC. There's only one train station and it's the bottom of the town centre, (makes the border to burbage too). There is probably more to do in Nuneaton- however I'd say generally Hinckley is overall 'nicer'. (I'm sure people from Nuneaton would say the opposite though).
If relevant Nuneaton has direct trains to london Euston pretty cheap and quick too.

JustLurkingAway · 19/01/2023 19:31

Bulkington is one I'd look at.

CrapBucket · 19/01/2023 19:38

Jeez if you're a city boy don't move to Lutterworth!!! I worked there for a few months and even my lunch breaks were depressing.

JustLurkingAway · 19/01/2023 19:42

Above post made me think Nuneaton is probably a better bet, a lot more going on there as Bulkington is only a small village! Although only a 10 min drive into Nuneaton, 20 mins into Cov city centre etc so perhaps not a massive consideration?

SecondSleep · 19/01/2023 20:00

@happynewyear55 thanks for the info! Any thoughts about why quite a few houses seem to be for sale in Westfield Road /Strathmore Road and future developments near there?
