Parking Disabled Spaces

babsanderson · 16/01/2023 14:44

Do you ever park in disabled parking spaces?

My DH has a blue badge and it seems so common for non disabled people to do this, especially when waiting in their car for a child to leave an activity. He just winds down his window and asks them to leave - they usually do. But it is annoying.

No I don't do it
I saw how they benefitted my cancer ridden grandmother before she died and my Aunt who had MS

It boils my piss seeing others do it

Its selfish fuckery

catskittens · 16/01/2023 17:46

no i havent
who on here is going to admit to using a space

It is abused and really hacks me of same as pip/dla being abused goes hand in hand

now awaits the pip etc is hard to get etc etc

plenty of people are on t and know how to play the system same as the blue badge and yes im disabled to (not blue badge) just because some MN ers dont know people playing the system does not mean it does not go on

That has nothing to do with what the Op was about though.

I do. But I have a blue badge.

On the rare occasions I can get one. Couldn't get one in either Tesco or lidl yesterday. Had to park miles away and walk in Lidl which I'm suffering for today and parked in a parent and child space in Tesco. Which I'm expecting to get slaughtered for on here now but it was that or go home as I can't get out if I can't open the door and I needed food.

Why would you be slaughtered for? You have done nothing wrong.

strumpert · 16/01/2023 19:22

@LadyKenya you've not seen any parent and child parking threads here then 😂

LadyKenya · 16/01/2023 19:31

@strumpert I have seen a couple of those threads😁, but you have a BB, so you can, and should park in one if the disabled bays are taken up. Do not struggle because you are worried about what people will think. As you know, as long as you display your badge, you can park there.

strumpert · 16/01/2023 19:34

Well from what's been said before people would berate me and key my car so 🤷🏼‍♀️. But I genuinely couldn't have managed to get out without it and I'd to park at the far end of the car park in Lidl and walk the length of the car park both to get to Lidl and then to get to my car and then back with the trolley and then back to my car.

I wish I knew where this car park was with hundreds of empty disabled spaces because I've never seen that.

That's not what the post is about. It's about using disabled bays without a badge, not abusing the badges

I am still awaiting that poster's reply, about this mythical car park.

itsgettingweird · 16/01/2023 19:44

My ds has a blue badge.

It's standard when we attend any leisure centre for the blue badge spaces to be used as pick and drop off points either whilst they wait in the car or are "only going to be a few minutes".

Quite often all 15 spaces are taken up - of which about 5 have badges so it's a huge (not so) minority!

Drives me nuts. What's worst is when they get all offended when you point out to them.

itsgettingweird · 16/01/2023 19:50

For all those who say "but there were 5/6 other free spaces".

IME of the local leisure centre people all employ this mindset.

But the 5/6 they say are free all end up furthest away from the entrance whilst everyone parks on the 10 closest spaces because others are free.

Elderflower14 · 16/01/2023 20:25

Ds2 had a blue badge when he was younger... One day my sister, my niece, ds and I went shopping. I had forgotten his badge so we went in a parent and child space. As I went to get out of the car a car with a very loud stereo went into a disabled space and a lad jumped out to go to the cash machine. I was furious.. I went up to him and had words.. He told me to go and hassle someone else. I told him I was having far too much fun hassling him.
When I went back to the car my sister was hiding in embarrassment under the steering wheel!!! 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣

When BB spaces are policed properly, there are generally enough to go round.

The QE2 hospital car park near me has an entire floor dedicated to BB parking - over 100 spaces. But to get out you need to show your badge and they check the person the badge is for is actually in the car. Which now word has got round, they are. If they aren't the barrier isn't lifted and you need to reverse out and pay. Shame.

Itisbetter · 16/01/2023 20:59

I don’t really care about people using the disabled space to use a cash point or pick someone up. For me these are minor inconveniences and I can wait a few moments to use the space.

This Trying having a disability that's not good enough to get any benefits. is just so obtuse and ignorant i honestly can’t believe anyone posted it.

I have a blue badge and a disabled bay marked outside my home. People park in it the moment I leave.

Apparently, if a bay is painted white then it is a 'courtesy' space. If its painted yellow then its legally enforceable and vehicles parked in it without a badge can be fined.

HTH. This is advice from the local police and council which was given to me last month after I complained that no one ever got ticketed when they park outside in the white painted bay allocated to my home/car.

XenoBitch · 16/01/2023 21:09

No. If I have needed the space (broken foot so boot and crutches), I would park in a P&C space as close to the shop as possible. You can't get a BB for injuries or post-op mobility issues. Maybe there should be such thing as a temporary badge.... call it a different colour to blue.

I knew someone who always parked in BB space, but it was not her badge. It was her husband's, who was at home most of the time. Total misuse of it.

Then you get the folks who have a go at others for parking in BB space, despite them having a badge because they don't think they deserve it, or don't "look disabled enough". It is BB holder, not BB enforcer.

purpledalmation · 16/01/2023 21:36

I have a disability van for DS and people often park without a blue badge. Especially at our hospital outpatient which has about a dozen spaces near the entrance. Of course no spaces free today, but I did see a car with a parking ticket in a disabled space so had a chuckle. Shadenfreude big time

LadyKenya · 16/01/2023 21:41

I could never imagine confronting someone because they do not look disabled enough. I mean who even thinks that way? There is more awareness now than there probably has ever been, regarding disability, and the presence of hidden disabilities. I do not think that it is down to members of the public to confront people who they feel are not disabled enough to hold a blue badge.

Underhisi · 16/01/2023 22:00

I used to quite often see cars without blue badges parked in the leisure centre's blue badge spaces and also at the park run at the local country park ( ds has a bb badge and we couldn’t get a park when we arrived just as the run finished).

amusedbush · 16/01/2023 22:23

Itisbetter · 16/01/2023 17:18

@amusedbush bit he might be

a disabled driver who has returned to his car and was waiting for his passenger

a disabled driver who needs to pause on returning to his car before driving

the passenger of a disabled driver waiting for the driver to return.

im not sure misused of bb space is a given.

But he didn’t have a badge on his dash, so we’ll never know.

It was also just one example of half a dozen similar ones I could give.

I've never confronted anyone with a BB. I have who haven't had one.

Why would you even do that? They could be waiting for one? Or really struggling without one? They might be yet to pull it out to put on the dash.
What makes you suddenly become a traffic warden?

YetMoreNewBeginnings · 17/01/2023 01:20

I don’t bat an eyelid round here just now as our local council are taking 26 weeks to issue blue badges. And that’s people who fit the automatic criteria - god only knows how long the people that don’t and get assessed are waiting.

I’ve had to continue using the spaces while waiting on my Dd’s new badge when we’re in places with no parent and child spaces (there is usually about enough space in them to get her and her wheelchair out) or we’d be unable to go to doctor or hospital appointments and the likes.

Because I need the space and they don't. I have watched someone pull up and jump out without showing their badge. We say excuse me do you have a badge and they sheepishly get back in their car. 3 times it's happened and 3 times they shouldn't have been in the spot. All men as well

I'm not sure what people don't understand about blue badge spaces, they are for people with valid blue badge,s if you don't meet the criteria you don't meet the criteria they are not for peop!e who.decide that their needs are valid .
