Parking Disabled Spaces

Do you ever park in disabled parking spaces?

My DH has a blue badge and it seems so common for non disabled people to do this, especially when waiting in their car for a child to leave an activity. He just winds down his window and asks them to leave - they usually do. But it is annoying.

Why do you think? I’m going round in circles trying to find a space, meanwhile there’s 100’s of empty disabled bays sitting empty.

100s really.

No I don’t do this. However it does annoy me to see a packed car park with rows of empty disabled bays!

Why? Would you like more people to be sick or injured so they get used?

@OlleOskiFelle

It is irritating the rows and rows of more often than not empty disabled spaces, particularly when you're trying to find a place to park.

Why so many? Sometimes I think surely there could be fewer as they are empty a lot of the time.. well when I'm parking anyway.

Maybe it needs to be a certain percentage of the car park as disabled spaces, does anyone know?

Where the hell do you go that has 'rows and rows' of disabled bays? The most I've ever seen is 6 Confused

NotAnotherBathBomb · 16/01/2023 16:05

Really irritating. The child I care for has one. Took him to an activity that has 4 spaces, all full. Got out to find that one of the cars had to badge displayed. Went into staff to ask if they could help, maybe page the owner of the car as they had no right to be parked there. The guy looked at the car and said oh yeah sure hang one.

Another staff member then proceeded to the car to move it. Disgusting.

That should say 'no' badge displayed

Flowersonthewall123 · 16/01/2023 16:09

Yes I will admit I have once or twice. However it was to use the cash point with kids in the car so didn’t want to get everyone out and there was 5 other disabled spaces. No way I would park there if the other disable spaces were full.

It was a total of 2mins in a local village supermarket where there is always loads of disabled spaces.

bloodywhitecat · 16/01/2023 16:09

Where is the mythical car park with 100s of blue badge spaces?

Yes, I do park in blue badge spaces when I am with my little one as he holds a blue badge.

AnyRandomName · 16/01/2023 16:11

Never, not once and neither has my DH.

TrollMunter · 16/01/2023 16:13

I used to when I was an annoying twat teenager. Not now. I park as far away as possible to give others who need it closer spaces to the supermarket/whatever.

bluelavender · 16/01/2023 16:27

Some people have a 'I'll move if a disabled person comes along' view. It's really annoying; as its not easy for me to park up; get my wheelchair out; ask the person nicely if they can move; put chair back in car; park, then get chair back out again....

My chair is on the front seat; and cant lean over to ask the person to move.

It's also intimidating- you never know if someone is going to have a go at you.

The thing I do find odd is when someone has taken a BB space and displays a badge; but left the older person (who presumably the badge belongs to) in the car- I do know that the person in the shops might also be a badge holder in their own right though.

Cherrysoup · 16/01/2023 16:27

Our Sainsbury has at least 20 disabled parking spaces. What surprised me was how full the blue badge carpark at the hospital was as I was leaving at 8pm. I hope I can get a spot this week (I have a bb) because the other designated disabled carpark is the other side to where my scan is/the main building. Bit silly.

babsanderson · 16/01/2023 16:28

Blue badge spaces in hospitals are always at a premium.

The only time I used disabled bays without a badge was when my dad's mobility dramatically and rapidly decreased due to motor neurone disease.

During the time it took for the blue badge to come through if I needed to use a disabled spot for him then I did and risked the fine. Irrespective of necessary red tape he needed use of the space just as much as anyone else, and frankly so did I with needing to get him in/out of the wheelchair - impossible in an ordinary space.

There can be exceptions, but very rarely.

catskittens · 16/01/2023 16:36

the blue badge is abused a lot by people that should not have one
yes i know about hidden disabilities im not talking about them
and ive also heard of genuinely disabled being turned down
it's a joke and always has been

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 16/01/2023 16:36

I use them if I am meeting or collecting my Mum who is a Blue Badge holder. Occasionally that means a few minutes where I am in the car in the space without the badge but I try to minimise this.

When she was awaiting her blue badge we occasionally had to use them to drop off as she was wheelchair bound but we always moved asap, and generally tried to avoid it.

On one occasion when enquiring at a place about accessibility we were told by the owner of the shopping centre that we could use a disabled space in their car park despite not having a badge but we had just booked a mobility scooter. We put a sign in the car windscreen just in case.

Dbank · 16/01/2023 16:38

Never have never would. I realise how lucky I am not to need a disabled space and usually park as far away as possible.

In my experience blue badges are massively abused, by friends and relatives and respect for them has wained, hence some people think it's okay to use disable parking spaces.

The fact that the badge isn't registered to a particular vehicle makes it virtually impossible to enforce, although I can't think of a better way to implement it...

Andanotherone01 · 16/01/2023 16:40

I don't know where you are all finding these mythical "rows and rows" of empty BB parking bays! I have to either bring my disabled mum shopping very early or drive around for ages hoping to get a spot in one of the five or so BB spaces. It drives me mad how few there are in the massive car parks in our area.

BB shouldn't be registered to a particular vehicle..that's a really daft idea.

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 16/01/2023 16:42

I have a BB and people who park in them without really piss me off. I have asked people to shift before.

I'd like to see a car park with 100s of disabled spaces free? Where in the UK are those?

Forthelast · 16/01/2023 16:43

watcherintherye · 16/01/2023 15:12

Because in many (not all) places the number of disabled bays far outweighs the need for them. At my local station, the (always packed) car park recently had the number of blue badge spaces doubled, when the existing ones were never full anyway. Apparently it was a legal requirement according to the staff member I asked. The same in the multi storey car park where people circle around for somewhere to park, when there are many free blue badge spaces. My husband has a Blue Badge, btw.

They don't, unfortunately.

I have never been to a carpark where there are 100's of disabled parking bays. Where is this wonderland? Where I live there are not enough imo. And no I would never park in a bay meant for BB holders. It is selfish.

Strange reply… No I would like the proportions to be more rational, ie bb spaces that are always empty whilst the rest of the car park is rammed to be converted into normal space

They should get rid of the C&P before BB spaces.

I used to work for a MH charity (NHS IAPT work contracted out)
Management parked in the 2 BB spaces. I had a BB but had to park further away.
At my kids Primary School, my GP's wife used to use the BB space (just the 1).
I saw the HT use them at the local shops.
Anecdotal, but all true (I live very rurally so everyone knew what everyone else was doing unfortunately). They were aggressive when confronted about it too.

I'd rather not need a BB but I do. Those that dont' should NOT park in BB spaces.

tedgran · 16/01/2023 16:53

When I worked in a library, lthere were a couple of disabled parking places which non disabled sometimes used. I had a notice which I would put on the windscreens, "You've got my space, would you like my disability?"
