Heinz tomato soup

First World problems and all that. But has Heinz soup changed recipe? I know it's a ridiculous price now, but it is my comfort food with a cheese toastie when I'm low.
I'm sat here with a mug of it and I can't finish it, it's so sweet😥

Another vote for the Aldi version, their chicken one is also nice.

larchforest · 15/01/2023 18:37

I've never liked tomato soup (not helpful).

Slightly off-topic, but I've always found Heinz beans too sweet, and I much prefer supermarket own brand. Morrisons, Lidl and Aldi are all fine.

I've never had a particularly sweet tooth and it does get on my nerves rather, when you read the packaging on something and it says 'no added sugar' or 'reduced sugar' and you think great, I prefer things less sweet anyway, and then you find they've gone and added artficial sweeteners instead.

The only exception I make is Diet Coke - it is streets ahead of ordinary, which I don't like at all.

Also had the M&S one recently, 65p, was also quite Good. Similar to the Baxter's one but thicker.

My son eats it everyday (he's autistic) so it can't have changed that much or he would have been the first to notice 🤣

Is he eating recent stock? I'm hoping it is just a blip, as it will obviously be more of an issue for you than me🤞.

Yep Aldi or Lidl... Sainsbury's or asda...The heinz version has lost its way not worth the premium

With you on all of this, right down to the Diet Coke.

I'll give M&S soup a try, thanks for the pp's recommendation.

I hope i still like it. I bought 6 packs of 6 tins when they were on offer in Iceland because they worked out at 50p each. Maybe they are still the old recipe (fingers crossed)

TheChosenTwo · 15/01/2023 18:47

I’ve always found Heinz tomato soup
tooth achingly sweet! Like liquid sugar 😱 I haven’t had it since I was a kid but one of my dc always request it when poorly. I’m not sure she’ll notice the difference but if there are any complaints next time I’ll know why!

DadANDPK · 15/01/2023 18:48

@eatdrinkandbemerry yeah, I hope you've had the new stock already too. If it becomes a problem try the tesco version, I find that more like the older Heinz. I had a few new tins left after having the 1st of a 4 pack, I added a pinch of salt & a knob of butter & it helped. But I'm pissed off with Heinz (well the regulations that forced them to change their products!!)

hope your DS doesn't mind the change, but Tesco is half the price and almost identical. Well worth a try. (And I know what it can be like with kids with SEN)

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 15/01/2023 18:48

M&S tomato is waaay nicer than Heinz now 65p a can, their baked beans at 50p are lovely too.

@Ambertonix 🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼

if they are you could make a fortune in black market tomato soup!! 😂😂

if it's the new stuff, pinch of salt, knob of butter & some ground black pepper. Improves it no end.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 15/01/2023 18:52

Heinz is 4.8% sugar (so over a tablespoon - not a soup spoon) of sugar in a tin.
Baxter's is 5.1%
Campbells is deliberately confusing, but works out at 6% when made up
Own brand is 5.7%

But - originally they would have added more salt to counteract the sugariness. Which they don't do now. And it doesn't look as though they add Tamarind to it these days, which is what gave it some depth of flavour (that slight bite behind the sweet and saltiness).

It probably explains why it needs salty butter, cheese, bread and chilli flakes to make it taste of something other than tomato jam.

canina · 15/01/2023 18:56

Surprised there is no artificial sweetner as it tastes really unpleasant now

Ambertonix · 15/01/2023 19:10

@DadANDPK Thanks for the tip! 36 tins may seem a lot but i get through at least a couple of tins a week and they have Dec 23 BBE dates even though i know they will last a lot longer than that unopened if needs be!

StaunchMomma · 15/01/2023 19:10

I get the WW heinz tomato - tastes like proper Heinz Tom. Might be worth a try.

StandUpStraight · 15/01/2023 19:16

Mary Berry has a 10 minute recipe for a Heinz style tomato soup. My kids adore it.

Could be worth a try?

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 15/01/2023 19:24

I made some in the Soup Maker - it was amazing , used some fresh tomatoes that were too soft to slice , fresh and vegan.

(I keep roasted onions and some leftover roast potatoes in the freezer for soups)

Onion, fresh tomatoes , few roast potatoes, tinned tomatoes, basil, oregana, Marigold stock powder . No milk or butter, just some black pepper to season.

<Smug>

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 15/01/2023 19:35

Make your own with tinned tomatoes and double cream! You won't look back.

catskittens · 15/01/2023 19:42

was reading last week that one of the supermarkets was going to price Heinz soups at £1.70

didnt soup used to be a go to cheap food

Spanielsarepainless · 15/01/2023 19:45

Did I see somewhere on MN that it's now vegan, so no cream?

The only vegan one is labelled 'plant based creamy tomato soup' - the original absolutely still contains milk and cream.

Remmy123 · 15/01/2023 21:07

I have to put salt in it as too sweet

FredaFox · 15/01/2023 21:16

I thought the original had changed to plant based

FredaFox · 15/01/2023 21:16

No, that's in a different can. Although some of the clickbait headlines were stoking things by claiming that the original had gone vegan.

OP posts:
PaperMonster · 15/01/2023 21:49

Yes, I’d read a few weeks ago that they’d removed dairy from it to make it vegan.
