Is this new road marking even legal?

I hate it. What on earth were they thinking? Can councils just design any style of road markings that they want?

Did the line painter have a stroke?!

AnotherAppleThief · 10/01/2023 19:35

What does it mean?

RandomUsernameHere · 10/01/2023 19:35

I have no idea what it even means!

Changingplace · 10/01/2023 19:35

What on earth? Is this real or photoshopped?

TheYearOfSmallThings · 10/01/2023 19:36

No idea what that means.

ethelredonagoodday · 10/01/2023 19:37

I work for a highway authority, and I'd say not and that it doesn't comply with standards. I'm with the PP who suggested the line painter has had some sort of episode, but I've just googled the scheme and it is intentional apparently! 🤔🤣

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 10/01/2023 19:38

Well you are just showing off - you’ve got actual road markings!

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 10/01/2023 19:39

Wait… what?? What are you even meant to do, drive over the lines or try to swerve with them??

Oakbeam · 10/01/2023 19:41

It’s real and in Clevedon.

If I recall correctly, you are not allowed to cross a solid white line except in specific circumstances, so it is going to make life rather awkward for most car drivers.

Wrongsideofpennines · 10/01/2023 19:45

I'm so confused by this. Why is the parking in the middle of the road?

RandomPerson42 · 10/01/2023 19:46

Oh my, if I was driving towards that it would make me want to swerve and I bet eedyits actually do so, totally irresponsible.

YesILikeItToo · 10/01/2023 19:46

Driving is hard enough, to be honest. I don’t have time to process signs like these. Even if the council have the powers.

YesILikeItToo · 10/01/2023 19:50

You’d be swerving into the cycle lane, @RandomPerson42 , so that’s a hazard. I’m sure you check your mirrors, though, and so would come to an unexpected stop. No doubt the folk behind you would have maintained an appropriate stopping distance, so that’s ok.

Speedweed · 10/01/2023 20:27

I can see doing it to both lines as some sort of pathetic attempt at speed control might be the aim (wouldn't really work though without bollards to enforce), but not next to a straight line - that makes no sense as there is no space for the car where the lines are close?

PuttingDownRoots · 10/01/2023 20:32

So the bit in the middle is parking, with a cycle lane on one side and a one way street on the other?

I think the road planner was high or drunk personally.

MrsMoastyToasty · 10/01/2023 21:07

I've been to Balamory/Tobermory. They wouldn't recognise it- they only have t junctions, a couple of roundabouts and no traffic lights!
I've also been to Clevedon .

ConfusedNT · 10/01/2023 21:13

According to a council spokesperson, who seems in favor of the markings, in the article a poster linked to:

A wavy line provides uncertainty to the driver

Because that sounds safe, uncertain drivers...

I feel like councils shouldn't be able to just pick and choose whatever markings they want, surely there should be consistency across the country

StarInTheHeavens · 10/01/2023 21:14

I believe it's intended to make you slow down. But councils can't just invent new road markings, how're we supposed to know how they're accurately used?

OP posts:
ConfusedNT · 10/01/2023 21:16

Tomorrow I'm going out and painting cats on the road.

It will make the drivers uncertain and make them slow down, which will make it safer for cats. It feels as logical a decision

(with the small issue that I can't draw, so its less likely to look like a cat and more like a spray paint bottle had norovirus)

Eyre89 · 10/01/2023 21:16

I live there. Apparently they didn't factor in the need for space for cars to swing round into and off their drives. And that was the solution.... to prevent parking obstructing access. According to the lady in one of the houses.

Why didn't they just use yellow lines or time-limited parking like normal?

Eyre89 · 10/01/2023 21:21

The whole scheme is ridiculous. It's soo narrow and there is bound to be alot of accidents. They made the road of shops one way with a cycle lane and sprayed horizontal double yellow line on the kerbs to discourage parking. No double yellows opposite loading bays. So if they are in use and someone parks the traffic can't get down the road. A huge waste of money and very poorly done.

asblindasabat · 11/01/2023 08:32

What on earth?!? I’ve never seen something more bizarre!
