Helping Hedgehogs

Can I just share this here, in case any of you see a hedgehog out and about this time of year?

mobile.twitter.com/HedgehogCabin/status/1612827901732261889

This time of year many of you who regularly feed will have sick hogs arriving. They may look small but they're not babies. They're adults who are so sick they've lost half their body weight.
Food won't mend them.
So if thin or appearing hunched, please get them to a rescue.

Thanks 🦔

Bump.

Ours are still nowhere to be seen yet but will keep an eye out.

Thank you 🦔 🦔 🦔 🦔

BamBamBilla · 10/01/2023 18:11

I've never seen them in my garden but I have heard them in the summertime. I always keep an eye out.

Wheelyweddingwipedout · 10/01/2023 20:01

Well done for starting this @RichardOsmansXraySpecs. We’re doing this for Prickles 💐

There’s some videos from Hedgehog Street that have been posted recently as well as a new newsletter from People’s Trust for Endangered Species- will share them tomorrow

Re-sharing great video from last month from hedgehog street 🦔

Good advice OP.

Many people don't see hedgehogs in their gardens as they can't get in and out, so make hedgehog highways either in or under fencing. Leave out a hedgehog house, and some food (inside a secure feeding station), poultry or meat flavoured cat food and biscuits, plus water. Never fish and definitely not mealworms. Give these lovely creatures a helping hand and happy hogging!

catandcoffee · 11/01/2023 22:53

bump to share this vital info.

junglistmassive · 11/01/2023 22:55

Thanks for sharing. I will pass it on

So important to say, yes get them to a rescue as soon as you possibly can. Me and DDs volunteer at a Hog rescue and unfortunately the amount of times well meaning people bring them too late for intervention is common because they thought they were doing the right thing trying to feed and water them.

Here’s the January newsletter from People’s Trust for Endangered Species that I promised to share - January newsletter

Thanks for this thread @RichardOsmansXraySpecs

I was also following @Pricklesinperil original thread 💐

We are lucky to get a few hedgehog visitors in our garden. I still put food out nightly for them as they do wake from hibernation now and again and will head to their known food sources first. There is no natural food source for them at this time of year so it’s just as important as during the summer months.

And absolutely agree, any hog out during the day needs rescue attention.

AgathaMystery · 12/01/2023 11:28

No visitors here for a long time but I will put some grub out tonight just in case. I am hoping mine are nicely tucked up somewhere.

One of the latest Hedgehog Street videos -

Champagneforeveryone · 14/01/2023 13:54

Anyone who volunteers with a hedgehog / wildlife rescue, I have a question if you don't mind?

We recently rescued a small hog who was out in the daylight and obviously unwell. We took him immediately to a local rescue but he sadly died overnight. I'm sure the lady we spoke to (I have subsequently lost her number) said they often needed gardens to release hogs who were unable to be fully rehabilitated. Is this something I have made up?

Wheelyweddingwipedout · 14/01/2023 21:17

@Champagneforeveryone it’s quite true, the British Hedgehog Preservation Society have a list of rehabilitators who do just that. If you’re interested, please contact BHPS on 01584 890801 - here’s a link to one of their pages.

BHPS have also partnered with the Peoples Trust for Endangered Species and created Hedgehog Street - you can become a hedgehog champion as well if you haven’t already 🦔

Bumping up thank you for this 💜🦔🦔🦔

Pickledprune · 25/01/2023 07:19

I'm a hedgehog champion and also fostered and helped rescues. Please get one to a rescue if you see one out and about now it's not normal. Don't wait to see if it looks ok and don't try to look after it yourself. Get a box that's deep, and heat if possible like a warm hot water bottle wrapped in old pillow case in a quiet room, then call a rescue .

. They can emerge from hibernation as early as march if it's very mild. Late April into may is first lot of babies time. Thanks for looking out for our wildlife xxxxx

Meant to add this video from Hedgehog Street too! 🦔

Wheelyweddingwipedout · 01/02/2023 20:16

New video!

shall I start a Feb thread tomorrow?

AgathaMystery · 22/03/2023 23:50

Not sure if a Feb thread exists but…. MY HOGS ARE BACK! & They are starving!!! I’m so happy they survived hibernation. There is def more than one out there. Could there be babies??

RichardOsmansXraySpecs · 23/03/2023 09:26

So glad your hogs have reappeared. I've just been reading they are very groggy waking up from hibernation so don't worry if they don't come and feed every night, just keep putting food out.

I hope the weather stays nice for them, spring has finally sprung near me. The daffodils and blossom are looking lovely and the sun is shining ☀️ 🦔

AgathaMystery · 23/03/2023 21:55

Sleeting it down here. So wet and cold. I will leave fresh grub out each night - at least it’s there if they need it.

I miss @pricklesinperil - I wish her family knew how much good she has done.

SilentHedges · 23/03/2023 22:04

South East here, I've got a couple of hedgehog houses in the back garden and lots of hedgehog highways. Ive had one huge Hogzilla in a nest box all winter plus another that died of lungworm sadly. I don't think my hogs hibernated as the weather has been so changeable and the cat food goes every night (definitely hogs).
