Will my MIL continue to receive PIls pension for the rest of her life?

I've asked my financial advisor but he's very slow - I've googled and can't find a definitive answer.

PIL died last year and MIL is now receiving his state pension as well as her own. Will that carry on for her lifetime?

Can you not check directly with the pension provider? MIL gets a small amount, 25% I think. She was expecting the full amount.

Going to call them today after work.

No, its definitely a state pension. Basic state pension. I have the paperwork from dwp

Have they been informed he died ? If its state pension I "think" this is an oversight contact DWP ask them.

I don't think it is an oversight see link above but of course i will double check.

given your other replies, OP, it sounds like the Married Woman's Stamp, so she would be entitled to some (all?) FIL's pension.
Some women, like my mum, opted in later years to "make up the shortfall" that they accumulated by paying the married women's (half) stamp. It didn't and they're fucked if they're not now elligible to receive the spouse's pension.

It's a good idea for everyone to check pensions etc, now, rather than later. (I'm in Germany, when i was 50 the pension office wrote to me to say "there are gaps, here's an appointment to discuss it". They were efficient, even in contacting the UK side - pre Brexit - to complete the data. Now i receive an annual update telling me what i would get if i claim it now, and what i will most likely get if i continue to earn what i earn now. It's a rather good system)

My Mil got her dh's state pension when he died, she had nothing in her own name because she never worked in the UK. She was an immigrant from Europe and a housewife all her life.

Who is PIL? It's not an acronym I know? Do you mean her husband?

You can't work it out?

You’re being very rude for someone that wants help

Sorry - just irritated that people are assuming she's not claiming correctly or saying it must be a workplace pension when I've said that's not the case. The question was very clear and as it's obvious that everyone is as in the dark as I am I'll wait to hear from the DWP.

I thought she was being a bit rude to people who are trying to help too.

Greatly · 10/01/2023 10:32

Thanks all. I'm going to put the next bit in capitals, sorry.

I KNOW THAT SHE IS ELIGIBLE FOR FILS PENSION. That is correct and above board.

Just wasn't sure whether it was for life or not.

My mum got ( some or all, not sure) my dad's state pension when he died. Definitely legitimate and death was reported. I saw some of the paperwork. As far as I know it will continue until she dies.

Jeeeeez .. how to make friends chapter 1

ClangingBell · 10/01/2023 10:41

Were they both over state pension age when he died? If so, yes, she’ll continue to receive this for the rest of her life.

Wow. You're an absolute delight aren't you

probably. It is always worth checking if marriage gives you more or less security the older we get. Especially if there is other family who can override their medical wishes etc, or inherit the house you'Re living in.

Isn't the whole idea of a pension that it's financial income for life?

If you qualify for a pension/have bought an annuity, when would that stop other than on your death?

Klippetyklip · 10/01/2023 10:56

Before my dad died my DM only received approximately £200 per month state pension. I presume she had opted out at some point. After his death she received his full state pension and a percentage of his private pension. She effectively inherited his state and private pension.

Itschristmastimeinthecity · 10/01/2023 10:57

OP, yes your MIL will get your FIL's pension for life.

BTW, I like you. You're not looking for a long thread with lots of rambling on. You just want answers😂

I have a full old rate pension together with various additional pensions I.e. serps as does my Dh. If he dies before me I will get half of his additional pension but the percentage varies by how old you are.
