Currently watching the lifestream on YouTube...

Europe's First Orbital launch of satellites.

Anyone else?

(Its Virgin Orbit on YouTube, expected take off at 10pm)

These comments wind me up.

You do realise that they don't literally shoot a rocket full of money into space? And that it's spent on people and services, that then buy things here on Earth?

Those who lost pay loads wouldn't have been able to insure them and would have lost years of work and even with funding, a lot of their own money and future income from them also. Sure it was a risk they took, but with virgin orbit having several successful missions from the US possibly seemed like a smallish risk. Be interesting how much of the £11 million paid to VO was spent on British employees and how much was just bringing over their workforce from abroad.

News reports say the lost satellites were insured.

Share prices in Virgin Orbit have dropped though.

@lightand I'm a science teacher and I made a huge deal of it to all my classes yesterday. Trying to find a positive spin for today!

We learn from our failures? The best science is built on experiments which fail?

Watched the build up and launch because I'm in Cornwall and have a fascination with space exploration. The YouTube feed was disappointing - the two women were toe curlingly bad at filling and presenting. Would like to see more natural communicators doing this job next time. Other than that though, failure happens. Fingers crossed for next time. We need more skilled and diverse jobs down here.

Snort. Virgin failed at OLD SPACE TECH.

It wasn’t some ground breaking new technology or way to launch satellites into orbit. We’ve been launching Pegasus rockets from the belly of a plane to get satellites into orbit for over thirty years.

This is what happens when you let a dilettante attempt to do what the professionals have done for decades.

@Onnabugeisha she was asking for ideas of positive spin. Easy to come up with the negative as you've just shown.
