What helps when you feel a bit low?

Feeling a bit low today. Think it’s compounded by lack of sleep last night due to a nasty headache. I did go back to bed for a couple hours in the middle of the day, but feel guilty for this!

Just wondering what people find helpful to cheer themselves up when feeling a bit down. Sunday evening blue’s definitely not helping!

It really depends why I'm sad. But it could be as simple as a nice cuppa and a favourite film, or some exercise?
But without fail a couple of drinks with a good friend is the best!

Whereisme · 08/01/2023 17:49

Sadly doing dry January 😂

I'm with you OP. Was up through the night with toothache and have spent today feeling like all I'm good for is cooking and serving my two dc.
I've had a bath and put on a face mask.
Going to have an earlier night and start a new book.

a brisk walk somewhere green always makes me feel a little better. Coffee in a nice mug, the company of a good friend, reading and staying off phone / social media

KirstenBlest · 08/01/2023 17:54

Get all snuggled up with a page-turner novel.

MirrorMirror1247 · 08/01/2023 17:55

Stand up comedy videos. They got me through the loneliness of lockdown.

KirstenBlest · 08/01/2023 17:55

You've done the important bit of linking your feeling down to the lack of sleep.

desperatehousewife21 · 08/01/2023 17:56

Depending on why I’m sad I either need to wallow alone (cuppa and Netflix/ music/ book)

OR

Meet up with my friend which is always guaranteed to have me in fits of laughter which is def good medicine for sadness.

Fresh air- even a five minute walk.

But I am ill at the moment so that isn't an option- losing myself in a book (new, or re-reading an old favourite) , ideally with my heated blanket on and a scented candle

Doing a five minute declutter -just seeing one little bit of the house look better makes me feel more in control (with four children it's a non stop job)

Spraying a squirt of perfume or using some lovely fragranced moisturiser or similar - such a tiny act that leaves a bit of lingering pleasure

Doing something nice for someone else - letting a car out at a junction or a pedestrian across the road, doing a bit of work for the charity I volunteer at (thankfully a role I can do even when bed bound!)

Rattlethestars · 08/01/2023 17:59

Books, always books.
Especially with a hot bubble bath and some chocolate or hot chocolate.
Music helps a bit too, or going for a walk but books are definitely the best thing for me.

IceStationStallion · 08/01/2023 18:01

Organising a few cupboards, a bath or something nice to eat or all of them. Accepting that it is OK to feel like this and it is pretty normal at this time of the year with this rubbish weather. Watch something gripping on TV!

Thinkwicebeforeyouleavemylife · 08/01/2023 18:02

I've had a day like that today.

Luckily I did lots of jobs yesterday and DH did some household stuff today so the house is tidy and that's one less thing to worry about!

I've just had a lovely bath, made a brew and I'm on my bed listening to music. I've made my bed nicely and lit a candle.

Having a clean house helps me. And comfort food like toast with loads of butter :)

Onlyme54321 · 08/01/2023 18:03

Fresh air and a good walk with some music on, once I’m out it always does me the world of good. But getting the motivation to go out is sometimes a bit of a struggle!

EmmaEmerald · 08/01/2023 18:05

I've had a day like this and going to watch something now

heavy rain all day didn't help.

500BusStops · 08/01/2023 18:10

I’ve felt like this today too. I planted my sweet pea seeds during a brief gap in the rain (seeing them grow gives me something to look forward to), then read my book in front of the fire cuddled up to the dog.

RestingMurderousFace · 08/01/2023 18:10

Walk in the woods with mutts.
Bake a cake or roast a chicken - mindless activity but keeps me busy.
Epsom salt bath. Cures most things.
Fresh, clean bedding.

Sauvignon Blanc is dry

Thanks, that made me laugh!

Luana1 · 08/01/2023 18:13

A hot bath with a book, or a walk somewhere beautiful or I quite like doing a meditation from youtube - I follow a channel called lifebylucie that has some good short meditations that always lift my spirits.

Whereisme · 08/01/2023 18:13

Thank you for all the great ideas. Just had a lovely bath and my DH has cooked roast dinner. Going to watch an episode of Wednesday tonight with DH and the kids.

Thanks for the reminder that it is ok to sometimes feel like this ❤️

Going to compile a list of all these suggestions and more ideas welcome! The weather today definitely hasn’t helped!

Music
Booze
Music&booze

Good food

Good painkillers

Inspiring stuff to read, can be Saturday papers, books, internet stuff.

Luxury bath.

A bit of a declutter

Fancy fruit salad

Whodunnit on TV

Making the husband do random tasks (think putting a dart board up) or at least debating why an utterly useless task is vitally important.

Twillow · 08/01/2023 18:19

A shower and a quick tidy-up usually helps me, and if it's lack of sleep-related and an early night with a 30 minute read in bed.

illiterato · 08/01/2023 18:19

Busy hands, quiet mind

so for me, gardening, especially a good bit of hard physical gardening, does the job.

a run always works as well.
