Bank account suspended. Can't get another

Around 2 years ago my daughter bank account got suspended it was with Halifax. Did not understand why . But they also would not explain anything. Thought it was odd. Managed to open one with metro had that for a while then the same thing happened. They told her they can't tell her anything and to write to head office.

Daughter managed to get a bank card which is done on line. Its not a maim stream bank and has a few cons to it . She can do basic stuff but she can't get credit checks done ect.

Anyway she did not contact head office at the time . Because she had so much on her mind. Was in the process of fleeing domestic violence. Had no fixed address due to keep being moved from one temporary to another dye to safety. She had social services involved . Them there was all the court and prison stuff linked to her ex. So she had so much going on that she just did not sort the bank stuff.

So basically it's been roughly 2 years since the bank situation happend. She has no idea why it happend. But something dodgy must have been going on for it to happen twice. Anyway even though its bed 2 years cam she do anything? She desperately needs a proper account.

Also has this happend to anyone if so what did you do ?

It happened to me because my ex had transfers from a country with a dodgy reputation (totally legit in his case) - so they cancelled my account, because I was connected to him.

I use Revolut and a post office account these days, can do everything I need with those two.

IntoTheDeepDark · 08/01/2023 13:59

Do you think her account was used for fraud? Did you let anyone use her bank details but doesn't want to admit it to you?

Have you checked her credit report?
Has she tried to find out why her application was refused?

IntoTheDeepDark · 08/01/2023 13:59

Sorry I meant did she let someone use her account for fraud/money laundering?

I would assume fraud - you mention domestic abuse, is this something the abusive person could have done to her account?
Could she do a Subject Access Request with the bank to see what information they hold about her?
Is there anything on her credit file that could give a clue?

Shinyandnew1 · 08/01/2023 14:07

Ask the bank that closed her account and do a data access request. Is there a Cifas marker on it?

Shes not done anything at all yet . As I said it was 2 years ago . But she's had so much going on she was not in the right place mentally to deal with it. I don't think she (let) him use her details but he easy could have.

Her credit report on experian looks reasonable. But she tried to get a phone. When they tried to do a credit check they could not because she does not have a main stream bank account.

I'm thinking fraud too.

A relative got an account with Barclays after a similar sounding incident.

RandomMess · 08/01/2023 14:15

Her ex could have sold or passed on her information to be used for identity theft so she is linked to fraud etc.

QuinkWashable · 08/01/2023 14:16

You don't have to have committed any fraud yourself - Bank Of Scotland and Natwest are particularly known for just refusing to do any more business with people who have connections to some countries, or like I say, in my case, I had a connection to someone who had connections to one of those countries (it happened when we went in to talk about getting a mortgage, so they investigated my account/our financial situation and cancelled my account)

If you have a google you can find out it happened to lots of people

They'll not tell you any more details, they've got no obligation to from what I understand.

RandomPerson42 · 08/01/2023 14:21

You can try and find out what happened but might not get anywhere.

For example, I know that some banks are very very strict on certain surnames if it indicates the person may originate from certain countries.

Try a different bank?

quicklybeendrivenmad · 08/01/2023 14:22

Get her to contact CIFAS to see is there is a marker against her, it would not show on a credit report

Is it worth contacting financial ombudsman? Or would she need to go though the bank first ?

Has she tried opening a basic bank account with starling?

Tried different banks all refused. And 100% nothing to do with surnames

No she needs to find out if there is a marker by applyying for a data subject acces request www.cifas.org.uk › dsar if it turns out there is one she will need to contact the organization to ask for it to be removed if they wont, they send a deadlock letter and she can appeal to cifas, if you look at the lionk it explains the process there

Is starling a recognised account?

www.experian.com/blogs/ask-experian/what-to-do-if-bank-closes-your-account/

This tells you somewhere else you can check

MrNook · 08/01/2023 14:36

Can she open an account with Monzo? I was rejected for an account with Lloyds and HSBC and NatWest but was fine with Monzo and was able to set up a phone contract using my Monzo details too

Greensleevevssnotnose · 08/01/2023 14:40

I have an account with Starling that works great but you need to get to the bottom of what happened

The very first thing to do is write to both banks requesting information (as she was told to!)

Then decide how to proceed. For example Fraud or Money Laundering would be a different set of actions to debt and different again if it was a mistake.

MockneyReject · 08/01/2023 14:48

I was turned down by the High St banks.
It seemed to because my previous address was a POBox (DV refuge), and because I am on the restricted electoral roll.
But Monzo accepted me, instantly. I've been with them for about 4 years, now, and it's the best bank account I've ever used.
Very good customer service.

baxtersm · 08/01/2023 14:51

Could be something to do with her address? Is she in rented accommodation? If a previous occupier had business with the bank before and been fraudulent or owed them money it snigger be flagging something?

CoolSlinky · 08/01/2023 14:55

i was refused a current account for poor credit - but my credit was close to perfect - spoke to everyone I could in the bank and they all drew blank. Made formal complaint, nothing. Nothing on any credit agency record - I raised freedom of information with bank and credit agencies. I raised it with the banking ombudsman who investigated and drew blank - I refused to accept their findings and insisted it went higher - gave them copies of all the info I had and then bingo - apparently someone at the bank had made a mistake and not owned up to it and they had gone on maternity and it was then uncovered - load of bullshit if you ask me - anyway I got an apology and £300 compensation- awful time, it was incredibly stressful, took nearly a year to resolve.

Basically that shows she knowingly allowed her ex to pay money into her account and that money was either the proceeds of crime or she allowed her account to be used for money laundering.
