Do you remove the middle of parsnips?

I've always cut them length ways in half, then quarters then used a peeler to remove the middle.

Is it necessary? Tedious 😂

No, I've never heard of anyone doing that! I just too and tail, maybe peel and chop into quarters

Torturedsoul · 08/01/2023 12:40

I've started to do this recently. Only on ones that are particularly woody.

GoodVibesHere · 08/01/2023 12:42

Yes they're too woody in the middle

I always chop the middle out too, with a knife though not a peeler.

TravelWeDo · 08/01/2023 12:42

Never!

NeverTooLateToSing · 08/01/2023 12:44

Yes, if I’m going to roast them and they seem woody or stringy in the middle. If they’re going into a casserole I just cut them into chunks.

Toooldtoworry · 08/01/2023 12:45

Never. Husband is a Chef and said he has sometimes if they're too woody.

donquixotedelamancha · 08/01/2023 12:46

What? This is mad. Do you nutters remove the middle of carrots too?

Garman · 08/01/2023 12:46

Never, and have never known anyone do it.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 08/01/2023 12:46

nah. life is too short to disembowel a parsnip.

Fuckitydoodah · 08/01/2023 12:46

Didn't even realise this was a thing. I've never done it. Peel, top and tail and then cut into quarters.

CaptainMyCaptain · 08/01/2023 12:47

No. I've never heard of this.

SirCumference · 08/01/2023 12:47

I’ve genuinely never heard of anyone doing this before…

SharonEllis · 08/01/2023 12:48

Only very occasionally if they are very large and woody but its super rare to find one that needs it.

ShrillBill · 08/01/2023 12:49

If its woody then yes. I have IBS and don't need a flare up.

FeinCuroxiVooz · 08/01/2023 12:50

I do except for really small and tender ones. the central bit is woody and takes much longer to cook for the larger older parsnips so you get a more even texture. leaving the woody bits in will mean that some bits are mushy by the time the slowest bits are cooked.

pursudebyablackdog · 08/01/2023 13:04

Nope. Peel, top and tail, slice in half or quarters if large, roast them with honey.

pinneddownbytabbies · 08/01/2023 13:14

I do it with larger ones, yes. Unless they are going in a casserole, or they are the thin end or small ones, in which case I don't bother.

TiredandLate · 08/01/2023 13:16

Never heard of this!

VictoriaBun · 08/01/2023 13:16

Used to but don't now , it doesn't make any difference at all. Don't peel them either just a scrub , likewise carrots.

CoffeandTiaMaria · 08/01/2023 13:17

No, give them a good scrub, top and tail, cut into quarters lengthwise or chunks if going in a casserole.

PaperBagsAreUselessInRain · 08/01/2023 13:18

No

But I don't peel the outer layer of skin off mushrooms either and apparently that is unforgivable 😂

RosesAndHellebores · 08/01/2023 13:19

Depends on the parsnip.

JaneJeffer · 08/01/2023 13:19

No

pigsducksandchickens · 08/01/2023 13:19

Yes, but then peel mushrooms 😱
