Madonna -underated?

Just watching Madonna at the BBC and reminded of all the images and musical styles she has explored over the years buy it seems to me she doesn't get the artistic credit of someone like Bowie. OK she isn't the greatest singer but she's brave and creative and was always interesting to watch and I can't help thinking she hasn't quite got the respect she deserves -particularly these days .

Where have her eyebrows gone?

There was no-one even vaguely like her before she came along.

For better or worse - she brought sex into the mainstream.

oh come on

She peaked with ray of light and it's been a steep downhill slide since. Now she just seems a bit tragic.

She's bleached them. It's a thing at the moment.

I think she can't musically find her place these days. The music industry has changed hugely and she hasn't been able to find a song or style recently that sells.

I can remember the Like a Virgin video and then Desperately Seeking Susan - and she was very cool and new. She then had a run of great hits peaking for me with Music (although my favourite was probably Vogue). I remember sneaking in to see her live at Earls Court. Somehow she’s lost her cool - which is nothing to do with age. Vivienne Westwood, Patti Smith and others seem to grow into themselves in a way Madonna hasn’t. It’s a shame.

I remember being shocked that someone could call themselves Madonna when she first came to fame. There wasn't the irreverence to things that there is nowadays.

I thought Madonna was her real name

SmokeyPaprika · 09/01/2023 07:14

You're right it is her real name. Must be a bit like Spanish men being named Jesus.

I think this hits the nail on the head. She’s pushing a particular musical style that’s not really resonating

And was happy not to correct that assertion. No credit to the black, and latino people who were the innovators of the dance movement.

She was working smart.
Maybe she just took ‘inspiration’ from them. She’s not in her own. Elvis and The Beatles come to mind…
