How do you sleep at night??

I often listen to birdsong on Amazon on my way to sleep but I would like to mix it up. I can't do anything with water because it makes me want to pee. Waves make me chilly and want to pee. Any recommendations?

I usually listen to a podcast or an audiobook. Non-fiction such as science or history type stuff usually is interesting enough to listen to that I’m focused on it and not worries etc, but it’s not THAT interesting and I end up drifting off Smile

For something really different… listen to one of those erotic sleep hypnosis type podcasts. Really recommended

Bard6817 · 07/01/2023 22:23

Silicon Valley astronomy podcast/youtube.

Both facinating and boring as hell…. Send some off within 20 mins. Otherwise i’m an insomniac.

I close my eyes in a dark silent room and drift off.

I'm the opposite any sounds will disturb my ability to fall to sleep 😳 a dripping tap, the whirr of the fridge freezer, anything that I suddenly tune in to, I can't drop off.

I've worn ear plugs in the past!

babynoname22 · 07/01/2023 22:23

Lots of different audiobooks

DurhamDurham · 07/01/2023 22:25

I usually fall asleep easily as long as the room is dark and cool (in temp not decor Grin)
If I'm having trouble dropping off I listen to a few minutes of brown noise via Alexa on my mobile and I drift off.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/01/2023 22:29

I'm like MoscowMules, I need silence, sometimes I moan at dh that he breathes too loudly. Poor man. Often wear earplugs. I like it if it's windy though, as long as it's not so windy that I want to watch outside.

The shipping forecast is soothing and makes me feel safe. Wink

mrsfollowill · 07/01/2023 22:33

I like 'white noise' plus one earplug! Have a fan on all year round - plus a dehumidifier chugging along on the landing - just a constant low buzz- cannot sleep when totally silent. I sleep on my side and the earplug drowns out DH snoring.

VictoriaBun · 07/01/2023 22:40

Silicon earplugs , and since becoming anxious due to covid (dh has a medical condition and was classed as clinically extremely vulnerable and his consultant basically said go home and isolate from everyone except your household )
I started taking 4mg of Piriton to zonk me out . I upped it by taking 1.5 tablets , I think I'm now dependent on them so weaning off and back to 1.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 07/01/2023 22:42

I'm partial to a bit of gentle train noise.

Floralnomad · 07/01/2023 22:45

I count backwards from 99 , sometimes it works , often I stop to think about something and pick it up again afterwards . I don’t get much sleep at all which is fine but I hate trying to go to sleep . Our dog is very Ill at the moment so he’s in with us rather than his own bedroom and he makes a fair bit of noise as well

BlueBlueBlueWinter · 07/01/2023 22:50

Agatha Christie audiobooks. I know how they all end so no need to pay massive attention, but definitely help to stop my mind going off on tangents for hours on end.

BobBobBobbing · 07/01/2023 22:52

Ocean songs album by Dirty Three. No lyrics, just music and guaranteed to send me off to sleep. Also my music for whenever I need to block the world out. Use it in work and when I was in labour.

TheChosenTwo · 07/01/2023 22:57

I generally fall asleep to the telly but can fall
asleep without it.
I don’t get a massive amount of sleep compared to some, I generally make do without about 4-5 hours but it’s enough for me. usually wake up in the early hours and just lay still (okay dh says this is a lie) for an hour or so before nodding back off again.
listening to anything at 2am would disturb him and headphones would just be uncomfortable I think?

Where does one find one of these 🙂

I use a system of muscle tension and relaxation if I can’t sleep. Start with a hand, tense all the muscles for the count of 4, then relax for 4.
carry on with the other hand, feet, legs, buttocks, fingers, whatever.

I also find it helpful to lie still and concentrate on making sure everything in my body is relaxed, imagining that I’m melting into the bed. I’m often surprised when I do this and realise some muscles are tense that I wasn’t aware of.

I used to go that in my party years. Might try again 🤣

I listen to cool worlds on YouTube.

toocold54 · 07/01/2023 23:12

I don’t listen to anything but i always read as it relaxes me and makes my eyes really heavy and tired.

Just decided to put one on after reading this Smile

Tootlingalong · 07/01/2023 23:14

I've used the free white noise app by tmsoft for years, pink noise and the dishwasher rinsing are my two favourites.

Podcasts for me too. Nothing serious and nothing that I would mind falling asleep in the middle of but interesting enough to keep me occupied. Usually things like WTF with Marc Maron (celebrity interviews), TV recaps or an episode of something like Decoder Ring or Cautionary Tales.

rainbowandglitter · 07/01/2023 23:16

I just put my head on the pillow and I'm asleep almost instantly.

Davros · 07/01/2023 23:17

Audiobooks. They must be very familiar so as not to be over stimulating but good enough not to make me want to start changing chapters, volume etc. James Bond are favourites, Sherlock Holmes, many Robert Harris books, Rebecca, House of Cards trilogy etc. all night at the right volume. I sleep like a log
