How do you keep your finished lego in good nick?

Ds saved up his Xmas money and bought the Daily Bugle. It is our most expensive lego by a long chalk. He finally finished it today and it looks amazing. But sooo vulnerable. I want to keep it safe (and hopefully keep some value) But I can already see the cats eyeing it up. I have seen a case available for £117, but too much!! Also, won't come for 3 weeks so 3 weeks of stress.

Kragle

bluebeardswife7 · 07/01/2023 20:03

I'm not sure it's a real thing. Also would kill resale value. Grin

Is it a real thing??

I read on here —- Cling film. This is more for storage, but we cling filmed dcs unwanted models and put them in a box up the loft. Seems to have worked.

bluebeardswife7 · 07/01/2023 20:22

I would love to cling film it. But ds wants to display it in all its glory.

Ikea sell some clear plastic boxes which are ideal I think!

Needmorelego · 07/01/2023 20:28

@Saisong nooooooooooo.
Never say that. Never. The Lego God's will get you.
@bluebeardswife7 keep out of sunlight - especially if the set has stickers. I dust with a little make up brush. But to be honest I don't display for long. I rotate my displays regularly (plus I like to rebuild and design my own stuff).
I know a lot of people have the IKEA display shelves with glass though.

bluebeardswife7 · 07/01/2023 22:15

I only want to spend minimum money. I feel like we bought a small expensive puppy without thinking about the forward costs

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 07/01/2023 22:18

We have a glass cabinet from ikea as well.

Before we had it I used to gently shower the model and leave on a towel to dry every year when it got really dusty. 😂

I use these www.idisplayit.com

Maybe ask this guy, he's got £4k worth set up!

TheMousePipes · 07/01/2023 22:27

We usually display for a month or so then dismantle and build something else.

InTheBrickOfTime · 07/01/2023 22:34

You can also get air dusters (often advertised as keyboard cleaners) which are great for dusting lego sets.

Thatwouldbeme · 07/01/2023 22:36

Well my hubby made the vw van, was very proud of it. Oh we're going to put it in a case on display. Yes you guessed it, it's in the bedroom falling apart slowly because I'm a heavy handed duster😁, pieces fall off and a open the vans door and shove them in 😁

elf1985 · 07/01/2023 22:37

My husband has an obscene collection of star wars Lego, he has a soft paintbrush and dusts it once a month.

bluebeardswife7 · 07/01/2023 22:54

Have you seen the daily bugle? It's like an ood carrying its front brain in its hand. I am thinking of rehoming rhe cats to keep it safe. It is stupidly tall with loads of dangly bits.

OP posts:
bluebeardswife7 · 07/01/2023 22:55

Luckily I don't need to think about dusting it.

OP posts:
bluebeardswife7 · 07/01/2023 22:57

Yet. My first focus is keeping it safe from real life.

Have you considered participating in Taco Tuesday?

DoubleShotEspresso · 07/01/2023 23:13

Clear acrylic display boxes
Here's an official Lego one but you can get just totally clear ones for about a tenner online.

😆

Lego stresses me out - I never know what to do with it!

Cleanthatup · 08/01/2023 00:10

Not a great picture but we put them on shelves around the games room. Keeps them built up and the kids love it. The larger ones are on stands and we have a few on the walls on special brackets and some in display cases.

we are hard core lego builders though 😆

fdgdfgdfgdfg · 08/01/2023 00:42

It's lego, it's largely invincible.

If one of the cats do get it, then it falls off the shelf, bricks fly everywhere. You spend 18 days looking for them and refuse to hoover that room until you find EVERY. LAST. BRICK. And then you get to build it again, because Lego is awesome

The bricks are largely indestructible though (far more indestructible than feet, as many people have found out)

On the rare occasion that a piece does break, or get lost, you can get replacement pieces from

www.lego.com/en-gb/service/replacementparts/

Way cheaper than spending £117 on a case.

Besides, cats are fickle beings, they'll be onto the next new thing by next week.
