As I really want to get one for emotional support, but I know it’s such a big decision

One of mine is very old and I have to get up to let him out for a pee in the night. And he smells bad.

Crayfishforyou · 09/01/2023 21:18

The fact that one day he will die.
I love my dog so much, I can’t imagine being without him.

that and the smell of a happily fox poo smeared dog. 🤮

When I was younger I thought animals were great for human mental health (and my own kids certainly gain loads from having pets). But now I'm a middle aged mum, the anxiety and stress of being responsible for yet another "person" far outweighs any mental health benefits. Don't get me wrong, I love my pets, they're great company etc, but I'm always worrying that I'm not looking after them perfectly (despite having had pets, and looking after them fine my whole life!) and there's always the fear of a major accident/illness.

I feel very much this way. Pre children, I assumed I'd have a dog and cat as well as my beloved small pets and if affordable a horse when I was an adult. But after my first and especially now my family is complete with 3 DC, I see what a huge responsibility having pets are and that section of my brain/my capabilities are all taken up with having DC.

I do really love animals though so I took a plunge this year and got a rabbit, she's absolutely perfect. She's a little vegan cat dog; home bodied and territorial and litter box trainable like a cat, sociable and craving affection treats and strokes like a dog. No smelly or messy poop.

They do not cost significantly less than dogs and cats though as they have yearly vaccinations, insurance, spaying or neutering etc, plus they live a comparably long life to dogs.

DementedPanda · 09/01/2023 21:39

Ermmm... only downside is when the garden is muddy so end up cleaning constantly.. the dogs can't help that though. Plenty pluses, company, nice walks, cuddles, adoringing eyes etc. Owner of a 6 year-old lab and 5 month old collie

Logicalreasoning · 09/01/2023 22:08

Mine sits right behind you if your in 1 place long enough... she’s a lab so lab owners will know what I mean, I’m always afraid I’ll hurt her if she knocks me flying.

Boymama1997 · 27/11/2023 10:06

Real talk? Everything.
They stink, they get hair everywhere, you have to pick up their poo, your garden will stink of dog wee, they lick their genitals right in front of you, will eat the grossest stuff if given the chance, roll in shit while on walks. Have 0 concept of personal space, jump, bark, whinge… you want to stay out one night? Well you can’t because they can’t be left alone for long. They are literally dumb as a box of rocks, they’ll eat things that could kill them, it’s like having to supervise a toddler except dogs are dumber

SheTookChances · 27/11/2023 10:21

There’s nothing I hate about the day to day stuff but they don’t live long enough and they break your bloody heart when they die. 😔

Jess579 · 16/03/2024 14:39

Well I have a 6 month old baby, and a 5 month old german shepherd for guarding reasons. I am not a fan of dogs as having 1 , so I find it extremely difficult. The smell, how dirty he is,mud, pissing when excited, too hyper, having to do work around him when i am already busy, literally everything bothers me. I genuinely not a dog person,I love cats. The only reason I agreed on having him is because my ex partner was abusive and constantly harrassing me and had to mive house twice so incase he would kick my door in again we needed some protection but tbh i regret having him . I dont hate him or wish bad to him,but I just cant get myself to like having to live with a dog

canina · 16/03/2024 14:51

I hate not having her with me now after 15 years of pure love 😔

sunnidazey · 16/03/2024 20:42

When it's towards the end of winter I hate everything about having a dog....but then spring arrives and all the mud dries up and all is forgiven (until they find fox shit)

DontBeAPrickDarren · 16/03/2024 20:55

Anal gland leakage 🤢

NursieBernard · 16/03/2024 21:10

The hair
The smell
The cost
The picking up warm shit
No spontaneity for over night stays/longer days out
Restrictions on where I can go beaches etc.

I love dogs and use to have 2, now passed away. Not having dogs for the past few years has made me realise that I definitely don't want any more.

Didiplanthis · 16/03/2024 21:19

I have 2.. one is very loving completely on her terms. She is independent and entirely out for herself, the other is incredibly needy and anxious and I am his emotional support human. Both would be crap emotional support dogs !!

JMSA · 16/03/2024 21:25

I don't mind being tied down, as I'm such a homebody.
I adore my dog and he brings love, laughter and joy to our home every day.
Yes, the expense isn't ideal. And we can't leave food lying around ever. He chews pants 🙄
His most annoying habit is that he licks soft furnishings. So I'll go to sit on the sofa and there will be a damp patch there. Same with the pillows on my bed. Or the blankets. It's maddening!
Best thing I ever did though.

wetotter · 16/03/2024 21:30

That their lifespan is too short, and one day your heart will break

JMSA · 16/03/2024 21:34

Fireworks. Having your dog so petrified and then the aftermath. She won't go outside in the dark in the evening now because of the wankers who let off fireworks randomly from two weeks before bonfirenight to a week after NY.

Aww, the poor wee thing Sad

Must admit, one of the things I love about having a thick dog is that he's fearless. It comes of having no understanding of what is happening in the world Grin

StarDolphins · 16/03/2024 21:39

Not helpful but there’s nothing I hate about my dog. He’s loyal, fun & doesn’t ask for much & it’s a privilege to look after him. I absolutely adore him & he’s the best company.

If I was to scrape the bottom of the barrel, he clap traps while he eats🤣

Wolfiefan · 16/03/2024 21:40

@Jess579 a baby and a guars dog you don’t want? Return the pup to the breeder and get an alarm system etc. this is a recipe for disaster.

Waitingfordoggo · 16/03/2024 21:44

I don’t hate any of it, honestly. There are bits I don’t love, like the hair everywhere and having to go for walks in high winds and heavy rain. But I don’t hate anything about it.

CrikeyMajikey · 16/03/2024 21:47

Awful recall.
Farts.
Enormous wet paws.
Sheds fur.
Does 3 poos in every walk.

PanettoneSoprano · 16/03/2024 21:54

Poo in the garden
Barking at the door bell
Arranging day time dog care
No spontaneous nights away
The cost of a holiday abroad doubles
Vet bills
Being stared at when I'm trying to concentrate

Still easier than a child...maybe 😂

PanettoneSoprano · 16/03/2024 21:56

I haven't experienced this yet, but I am already dreading it. She could shit on my pillow, she's still the best 💛

XelaM · 16/03/2024 21:57

Nothing.

Ours is the best 😍

Tell me what you hate about having a dog
CurlyhairedAssassin · 16/03/2024 22:11

It's not just holidays or nights/days out that are a pain when you've got a dog to consider. People don't think hard enough about possible life situations that will arise, where having a dog will just make your situation so much more stressful. eg very ill parent or child where you have to spend a lot of time with them at the hopsital. or young adult children moving to a city hundreds of miles away to university or for work. Taking them to open days or moving in days etc becomes a whole lot harder when you have a dog at home who can't be left that long. It means you either spend a fortune on doggy day care or dog sitter, or you just have to always compromise and smoeone has to stay behind at home instead.

Why anyone would decide to get a dog just as their life is getting less pressured from parenting young children but more pressured regarding worries of elderly parents, is beyond me.
