In terms of appearance etc

I don’t get any cosmetic treatments (except having my hair cut and eyebrows waxed, but nothing like fillers) but I would much rather be friends with somebody who looks ‘worked on’ than somebody who admits they laugh at other people based on their appearance. That would turn me right off a potential friend. I hate people who mock others on how they look, it’s the true definition of ugly.

Twist all you like, but the cold hard fact is that cosmetic procedures obviously have not been perfected properly yet, or why is it so many young otherwise decent looking people are wondering around paying to look to deformed or that they have had a stroke? Yes that situation is laughable as well as truly tragic.

knitfastdieyoung · 08/01/2023 13:05

Was blissfully low-maintenance in my 20's and 30s. Looked good without any real effort on my part.

Am almost 50 and it's a lot harder now. If I'm trying to look presentable it generally involves a hair styling, make up, careful choice of clothes. And I definitely need to up my exercise game.

What I'm not into is the slapped on with a trowel, Kardashian-style make up that people seem to be embracing now. (Tons of contouring, massive spider lashes, trout pout etc.) I still want to look like me. But a less washed out, knackered version of myself.

JamSandle · 08/01/2023 13:07

Less so the older I get.

figmaofmyimagination · 08/01/2023 13:08

I’m sort of bothered, but lazy, so I aim for things that last a while! I keep a healthy weight, have had laser hair removal, slap a deep conditioner on in the shower, have botox twice a year and use one of those moisturisers with a bit of fake tan in, but then day to day I don’t really wear make up and my clothes are carefully picked to suit me but be comfort and low maintenance.

Whatevergetsyouthroughthenight · 08/01/2023 13:17

I care about being a healthy weight and have never been overweight. I look at my teeth (clean, floss, dentist every 6 months). My clothes are clean and respectable but not fashionable.

I am in my 50s and average looking and other than removing facial/leg/underarm hair don’t really bother with anything else. No make up, nails, don’t pluck eyebrows, haven’t had a hair cut for a couple of years. Will use a bit of SPF moisturiser when I remember.

I have friends and a DP who seems quite happy with me as I am.

RosesAndHellebores · 08/01/2023 13:28

Hair
Teeth
Complexion

Are all important

Well groomed, co-ordinated, generally neat and tidy
Discreet jewellery
Natural make-up that enhances
Complete cleanliness

There is no substitute for a good coat, boots or shoes and bag.

Nails, brows, thick make-up are too often over the top.

Mojoj · 08/01/2023 13:44

We are a very vain family so are all extremely particular about taking care of our appearance.😃

I’m not twisting anything. I’m saying that for me a friend not fitting the right aesthetic is far less important than a friend who laughs at and mocks others for their looks.

DillDanding · 08/01/2023 13:47

Massively important as I’m massively vain.

MrsSkylerWhite · 08/01/2023 13:47

Not at all.

astarsheis · 08/01/2023 13:49

Quite important...I'm late 50's and exercise quite a lot and am quite slim. I also keep my clothes on trend and don't wear patterns or bright colours as I find them ageing.
I've not had any facial treatments and just use a good moisturiser and have lately added a few 'glow' products to my makeup. I have BIAB on my nails every 3 weeks, get my roots done every 4 weeks and my eyebrows threaded as needed.
DH tells me that my body skin is lovely and soft and youthful looking...we have been together for ever.
I'm pretty average looking but I think being well groomed, energetic and confident helps.

WallaceinAnderland · 08/01/2023 13:53

I've noticed that people who care about their presentation are the ones who struggle the most to accept the inevitable change in their looks as they age.

Ncgirlseriously · 08/01/2023 13:59

It isn’t. I decided quite young I wasn’t interested in being ornamental. I find makeup dull and it irritates my skin, I have no interest in doing anything fancy with my hair (recently had it cut very short), and I value comfort when choosing clothes.

I like seeing what other people can do with hair and makeup and clothes, but to me it’s a bunch of bother.

HaroldsDogBowl · 08/01/2023 14:16

I would say I don't care what I look like.

But..

I do go to the hairdresser, get nails done, have Botox, threading, waxing etc.

Happy enough to leave the house for the school run with no makeup, but hair always clean and styled.

Looks like I do care. Blush

user8912 · 08/01/2023 14:17

@HaroldsDogBowl how could you say you don't care what you look like but go to the extremes of Botox lol?

user8912 · 08/01/2023 14:18

(No judgement, I want it!!)

Grrrrrrr23 · 08/01/2023 14:26

I care more than I want to, definitely.

I find myself catching my reflection when out now and feeling quite depressed about it. When I think I look nice, it gives me a confidence boost, but I really wish I wasn't so bothered.

cloudychance · 08/01/2023 14:27

Not at all these days. I'm pregnant, have a 18 month old DD and as long as I am clean and clothes aren't stained I count that as a win

krill · 08/01/2023 14:44

Cosmetic procedures gone badly wrong if they look they've had a stroke.

Though I'd agree with you that there are bad, unscrupulous, money driven practitioners, some of whom aren't very well qualified, who will overfill or do poor work on anyone who can pay. Anyone over 18 that is, though it used to be over 16 with parental consent. I don't know if that's still the case.

HaroldsDogBowl · 08/01/2023 14:50

@user8912 read the bottom of my post.

HaroldsDogBowl · 08/01/2023 14:52

I don't look like I've had Botox, my mother is vehemently against such things and has never noticed.

I don't look done up at all. I see glamorous women everywhere, and I'm scruffy in comparison.

user8912 · 08/01/2023 14:53

@HaroldsDogBowl well I know, I was being light hearted too, but didn't see how anyone would consider for a second they don't care when going to those lengths.

krill · 08/01/2023 14:55

Good, subtle work won't be noticed. You're right.

Citycentre3 · 07/01/2023 14:57

Vain but lazy. I was naturally attractive when young and was not used to making much effort. Now that I am a bit older, I realise I need to up my game slightly, but not interested in spending hours of my time. I use a good day and night moisturiser, use sunblock, an anti aging serum, and spend 1.30mins a day applying concealer and lipstick. That is it, oh and brush my hair.

I laugh at women 20+ years younger than me, running between back to back appointments for hair/nails/brows/feet/botox/facials/fillers etc.
They are literally wasting their youth. It should be carefree and smug, that none of that needs doing because they have youth! They say youth is wasted on the young and that saying is never truer than with today's current generation.

I laugh at people 20 years older than me who need to up their game with their shoddy appearance.

Deathraystare · 08/01/2023 14:56

@barbrahunter ·
personally I am quite vain in terms of what I use on my face and skin but I'm too lazy to exercise and I only wear nice clothes if I'm going out somewhere special.

Hah! That is me to a tee! Mind you I do bother to dress up a bit for work. We can wear what we want so it is usually leggings/jeans and a tee shirt/tunic. I put make up on for ME, nobody else! If someone else likes it , it is a bonus. If they don't too bad!
