Hi, exactly what the title says basically - I have chronic periodontitis and severely receding gums. I’m so scared and my every waking moment I worry about losing my teeth. It’s affecting my whole life. Just wanted someone to chat to about it all really and wondering if anyone else is in the same position

I don’t blame you. After all the time and money you’ve invested it’s inevitable that you’re disappointed. Mine bleed intermittently when I brush them, I can go a couple of weeks and they’re fine then I see blood for a few days. After your experience I probably wouldn’t be any better off. I hope yours improve.

I've two back teeth coming out next month. No scope for implants due to the bone loss so if I want them replaced it'll be dentures. I'm not even 50!

Does anyone else find hygienists almost universally rude and unfriendly or have I just been unlucky? Dentists are usually much kinder.

I had a fab hygienist. He would explain what he was doing in between humming along to the radio and my teeth/gums were fab for ages after a deep clean from him. Unfortunately he left the practice. The next one was a grumpy cow. My current one is ok.

Hiya, was told last August i have gum disease and had a deep cleaning split into 2 sessions. Since then I have been brushing twice a day and flossing like mad! Had a check up Friday and gum pockets was measuring now at 4-0 but she was worried about back molar as it was measuring at 10!!!! And 2 other teeth infront of it was bleeding. So she injected me and deep cleaned it again. But them teeth are still sore and bleed slightly when i floss. I am just so worried and anixous about it. Does the deep pocket mean the deep cleaning never worked? I have asked if i should see a periodontist and she said no . I am only 35 and suffer with bipolar so past medication and bipolar lead to me literally not caring about my oral health. I am overly paranoid and just want to try and stablise this. My teeth are not straight either, dentist said in November when I had xrays that bones loss is around 20%. Any advice would be helpful thank you x

girlfriend44 · 26/03/2024 14:56

your not alone just keep going to the hygenist, and flossing and brushing your teeth well for 2 mins in between visits.

ByWildGoldWriter · 26/03/2024 19:10

@girlfriend44 thank you for your response. I mean will this deep clean work? Is it common to have more than 1 deep clean for it to stablise.?? I just feel abit defeated😪

WantingToEducate · 26/03/2024 20:44

I’m currently seeing a Periodontist for my gum disease and paying £1’200 for the privilege 🙄

Previously I had been to standard hygienist three times over the course of 9 months but she said that a more intense treatment was needed which is when she referred me to a Periodontist.

ByWildGoldWriter · 27/03/2024 11:35

@WantingToEducate how is it going now? How are you?

ByWildGoldWriter · 27/03/2024 11:39

@WantingToEducate and ìs that price each visit or overall treatment ?

WeirdIsPartOfTheJob · 27/03/2024 12:28

Using things from a company called Curaprox really helped me.

I use their velvet soft toothbrush, followed by their 1006 single tuft brush round the gum line and 06 interdental brushes between teeth.

Their Perio Plus Regenerate mouthwash and Perio Plus support toothpaste are also fantastic.

It’s to cover 4 appointments:

Appointment 1 : initial assessment and x-rays

Appointment 2 : more thorough assessment, charting of pockets, plaque assessment and then moulds taken for gum shields and treatment plan created.

Appointment 3 : Extra deep cleaning with local anaesthetic - one session in the morning and another session in the afternoon.

Appointment 4 : Review three months after the deep cleaning to check for improvements.

@WantingToEducate please keep us updated, hope your on and it is going well x

Ame133 · 03/04/2024 15:14

Hi all, just a bit of a positive update for anyone who needs to hear it.

I went to the hygienist today, after initially having pockets as deep as 9 in the some places (when I first started treatment over 4 years ago), 6 months ago my worst pockets were at 6, and today they worst pockets were at 3! I'm really pleased with the progress.

I saw a new hygienist who wants to see me back again in 3 months, where she hopes to see further improvements so 🤞

Tacocatgoatcheesepizza · 03/04/2024 17:34

As a pp on this thread who has also had the deep cleaning done, I thought I’d also update. It was a year ago now! The change has been incredible. Bearing in mind I had deep pockets around just about every tooth, the last time I saw my regular dentist she literally shook her head in amazement as there was no evidence of gum disease at all. And my hygienist who I’ve had to see every 3 months for years has now told me not to come back for 6 months!

So yes it was unpleasant but it has been absolutely worth it for me. I have so much gum recession that I am pretty much guaranteed to lose teeth early anyway but for now things are good.

Freysimo · 17/02/2023 17:00

Please don't panic. I'm 70 with gum disease and still have most of my teeth! I see a hygienist privately four times a year and she gives me a deep clean and makes sure I'm keeping on top of cleaning. I'm assiduous with flossing, using those little dental brushes and an electric toothbrush.

It's not always to do with poor dental hygiene, some people are just more prone to gum disease.

@Freysimo great post.
I would honestly say that's me, I'm just a little bit younger than you at 65, but I too am stable after great treatment in a special periodontists and a fastidious home regime.

It can be done.

biedrona · 07/04/2024 20:35

Thank you for this. I also just had a deep clean split into 4 sessions (each quarter separately). The amount of anaesthic made my head hurt and was so sore the next day. I do hope it will make a difference. Due to see her in 3 months time for a check/regular clean.

Yes I too had a deep clean around a wisdom tooth that's developed a pocket and it took the best part of a week for the injection she used to wear off, my jaw was really sore.
Much better now

Justgetitdone · 12/12/2024 23:18

I know this thread is old but I'm after advice/reassurance from anyone who has had receding gums due to cancer/chemo.
I have huge black pockets now since my last chemo and I'm terrified my teeth are going to fall out.
I have more chemo to go so assume it's only going to get worse.
Problem is because my platelets are really low I'm not even allowed to floss. I'm using corsodyl toothpaste and corsodyl mouthwash.
I really need to see a dentist for advice but they won't be able to physically do anything which may cause bleeding.

Has anyone else had receding gums due to chemo?
