Can any coffee drinkers help me with a gift for DH 40th - shameless post for traffic

I've had the (slightly last minute!) thought to get DH some lovely mugs to drink his coffee to go with the bean to cup coffee maker I've bought him. Is there anyone really into coffee who can give me any recommendations? Big/small? Ceramic? I just drink from an IKEA mug 😂 Thanks!

Oops - meant to shamelessly post this in AIBU 😂

What kinds of coffee does he like drinking?

You’ll want different mugs if he likes espresso or lattes (or vats if black Americano like me!)

RiderOfTheBlue · 06/01/2023 22:28

I've got my eye on these...

Le Creuset Stoneware Rainbow Coffee Mugs, 350 ml, Set of 6 Colours: Cerise, Volcanic, TeaLitre, Ultra Violet, SoleiLitre, Palm, 79114358359030 amzn.eu/d/iaG4nAm

He just drinks black coffee, but has occasionally had espresso so that's a good point @onyttig. So, a big cup for an Americano (that's black coffee?)

Ooooh they are lovely @RiderOfTheBlue

Yeah I'm a sucker for a nice mug. Currently on an embargo though as there's no room in my mug cupboard (until I break some).

The M&S octopus mugs are nice as well, if they're still available. They're big, perfect for a big americano.

I've had these for years and I love them x

Luckingfovely · 06/01/2023 22:40

Definitely the Le Creuset ones. Either or both of the normal sizes / or espresso sizes - depending on what he drinks.

Luckingfovely · 06/01/2023 22:41

Also let me recommend a lovely co called Roast & Post - they can roast coffee beans on his bday & post so they are delivered next day - great present!

an Americano is just a watered down espresso. You can have it in sizes from sensible mug to something resembling a bucket. And people do put milk in it. Not me!

If he mostly will just be drinking nice black coffee, then really nice normal sized mugs are a great idea. Ones that feel nice in your hand.

If you have a fair bit of budget, then an Ember Smart Mug might be a shout. It holds hot drinks at the perfect drinking temperature so if he’s the kind of person who forgets about a cup of coffee then the coffee would still be hot rather than sad and cold.

MsFrog · 06/01/2023 22:45

Thanks for all the lovely ideas, everyone. Are the La Creuset ones heavy?

Le Creuset mug/cups are good. My neighbour has them. I’m rather attached to my Whittard coffee mug. I also have a fancy set for espresso but hardly use them.

ReviewingTheSituation · 06/01/2023 22:47

A coffee subscription is always a good bet for a coffee drinker. Or find somewhere local to you that roasts beans and get a gift card.

I bought my DH a barista course (for consumers, not aspiring coffee-shop baristas) and he loved it. Learnt all the science behind how to get the best coffee from his machine. He takes great pride in adjusting the settings whenever he gets new beans to get the ultimate coffee.

Mumdiva99 · 06/01/2023 22:48

i think mugs are quite personal. I wouldn't thank you for stonewear at all. But I have one of the (now quite old) Starbucks large mugs which I love. Although it's too big for real coffee (when I broke my last one I had to track this one down on ebay at vast cost for what it probably a stolen mug!!). So what I'm saying is unless you know his preference I wouldn't spend loads on this gift.

But....what about an insulated mug so he can take his nice coffee out and about.
Or a coffee bean subscription - to try different beans for a year.

Or if this was just a small additional present - just some beans would be great.

Great present by the way. I hope he loves it.

I got my husband one of these for Christmas. It's lovely

inappropriateraspberry · 06/01/2023 22:51

Not a mug, it a fun addition to the gifts. A coffee plant. I got one for someone into their coffee and they really loved it. Good fun to see if you can get some beans out of it.

FortyFacedFuckers · 06/01/2023 22:51

Not the point of the thread sorry but which coffee machine did you buy?

Good idea. Or a cheaper alternative...

The le Creuset 350ml ones that a pp has posted are lovely ( we got some at Christmas) but DH finds the handles a little snug as he has big hands. Not impossible but not particularly comfortable.
Just in case your DH has the same issue OP.

I only like large China mugs. Not the narrow ones but the ones that are sort of square in profile like this www.lushlampshades.co.uk/products/owl-mug

BotterMon · 06/01/2023 23:10

Le Creuset ones are lovely but that Japanese one is rather special @HaroldandWilly - love it!
