Just have just visited Newport for an appointment, we weren’t there long, toilet stop and cuppa in Asda, half hour appointment in city centre and then got lost on the way out but felt very uneasy the whole time were there. It had quite a menacing feel to it and even on the bare aesthetics of the city seemed quite run down with a lots of old closed pubs, shops etc…

I would actually go as far to say it made me feel quite unwell but I guess that would just be coincidence!!

We actually live rural Devon so not even like I’m not used to the odd lay line of two but I was quite relieved to get back on the road…

Has anyone else felt that about a place before?

@SofiaSoFar

London is a series of distinct villages and small towns.
Which parts do you work in ?
Hampstead/primrose hill/Camden town/Soho/Trafalgar/the city....on and on Which part is the shit hole?

I've been to many places mentioned and agree however on Slough.
Slough is definitely ugly!
The town centre leaves a lot to be desired BUt.
There is buzz. It's on the edge of the largest trading estate in the UK. It's close to London.

It's not got that feeling of being cut off.

Kenya
Fucking horrible place

Aworldofmyown · 06/01/2023 20:22

Weston Supermare never wanted to leave a place so fast.

BirmaBrite · 06/01/2023 20:23

Blackpool, it was fine initially , arrived at about lunchtime but by the time it got to teatime I just wanted to gather my family and leave, it just had the biggest 'its all going to kick off' vibe.

We once visited Ludlow. Beautiful town.

However we went to get lunch. The famous sandwich shop shuts very early and we missed it. So went in search of anything else. Every restaurant and pub weren’t serving. Cafe we found open down a quaint back alley was out of food. Subway in the local mini market closed.

Then we went to Costa and no food left. We walked past the window and a family of 4 were sharing the last packet of crisps. We were in near hysterics by this point. Thinking of phoning a friend to send help in case we starved to death.

Decided to walk round the castle and considered eating local forage.

Found another shop and bought a loaf of bread, ham and some Mayo. Had a picnic in the car in giggles at what a weird day and town.

As we were leaving we saw a woman with a plastic tub gathering berries from a bush and we just lost it. Absolute hysterics.

It was a funny day and a good memory but my god do not go there if you wish to eat anything.

I once had to go to a few of the villages outside Peterborough for work - they all had a really weird vibe. It's the closest I've come to feeling that everyone around me was conspiring and watching me.

It felt like the Wicker Man of the Fens.

Isle of Iona, creepy place full of the nastiest, "superior" people I've ever met. Couldn't wait to get off there.
Shame, as I love the other Hebridean islands.

toddyhum · 06/01/2023 20:24

Shirebrook, shudders

RandomUsernameHere · 06/01/2023 20:25

Hayling Island is the most grim and depressing place I think I've ever been.

Johnduttonsbuttocks · 06/01/2023 20:28

North Portugal. Dark, oppressive place.

HenryCavillsPerfectTeeth · 06/01/2023 20:28

Scunthorpe

I haven’t RTFT but is there any town not on here? Nasty, snobby thread from a website that pretends to be left wing. Not everyone has the ££££ to choose where they live.

Luana1 · 06/01/2023 20:30

Has anyone been to Hatfield? That place is eerie, and has a forlorn feel about it.

mrswibblywobbly · 06/01/2023 20:31

Burnham on Sea (grim), Blackpool (absolute hole and rude locals), Newport and Newquay.

Hotspoon · 06/01/2023 20:34

I am far from snobby but I work in Grimsby and it’s just the absolute pits.

All of West London, Bath and Brighton have featured so far so I don't think it's about the cost of housing!

Craven Arms in Shropshire. Surrounded by some of the most beautiful countryside and lovely market towns, but it's basically just a crossroads with shops from the 1950s and a massive slaughterhouse right in the centre. Horrible place. Also Ardrossan in Ayrshire, just feels like the end of the line somehow.
Port Isaac in Cornwall is somewhere that really feels like it has had its soul torn out by second homes / holiday lets. I remember wandering around the village centre one late afternoon in May and there was hardly anyone else around and everywhere seemed empty, it was eerie and a bit sad. Beautiful place though.

Craven Arms also had a MASSIVE heroin problem.

Breakfastinbedonhols · 06/01/2023 20:37

I agree with Newport. The train station is so grey and grim.

You have almost described a horrific visit I experienced there once except I had an overtired toddler, it was pissing down and I did not have the fortitude to make sandwiches. Even the dog looked destitute.
it would have been easier to sell a kidney outside the castle than obtain food.
a foraging local might have redeemed things …….

I did say has any town not been mentioned? The majority of posts are just trotting out the boring standards and looking down on those who live there. Poor old Coventry for example.

Teateaandmoretea · 06/01/2023 20:40

And cov really has its redeeming features.

God knows they need something to do in Craven Arms. It only exists to make Leominster further down the A49 feel less of a shithole. At least Leominster has a Morrisons to pass the time of an evening.

Ilovegardens · 06/01/2023 20:40

Great Yarmouth - and Norfolk in general. Never again. Unkempt and just a weird vibe.

mrswibblywobbly · 06/01/2023 20:41

Can I add Savernake? the road through it is so creepy, if I was offered a million pounds I would not live there.
