Just have just visited Newport for an appointment, we weren’t there long, toilet stop and cuppa in Asda, half hour appointment in city centre and then got lost on the way out but felt very uneasy the whole time were there. It had quite a menacing feel to it and even on the bare aesthetics of the city seemed quite run down with a lots of old closed pubs, shops etc…

I would actually go as far to say it made me feel quite unwell but I guess that would just be coincidence!!

We actually live rural Devon so not even like I’m not used to the odd lay line of two but I was quite relieved to get back on the road…

Has anyone else felt that about a place before?

Herefordshire. Fred West country.

Mylittlepea · 06/01/2023 19:31

Amsterdam. Full of whores, thieves and drug dealers!

UK - Worthing.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 06/01/2023 19:32

CountryMouse22 please ignore my previous post - I just checked and there is indeed a Brixton village in Devon, which is something else I've learned today

Still true that the seaport gets called the wrong name a lot though!!

Jellykat · 06/01/2023 19:32

I presume you mean Newport Gwent, not Newport Pembrokeshire!!

Parts of a A74(M) south of Glasgow, and the raised part of the M6 around Shap. Both roads seem to go on forever. Bleak, foreboding feel to both in these areas.

Oh it's somewhere along that strech of road going North that you see Cock'n'Balls Wood* , copse of trees that look like a giant penis

*Might not be the real name

Kanfuzed123 · 06/01/2023 19:33

Walsall, specifically the town centre. Dudley.

alum rock Birmingham

OffToThatPlace · 06/01/2023 19:34

East Grinstead is very weird and bleak. Never felt happy there.

middleoftheroadlife · 06/01/2023 19:34

I moved to Newport nearly 4 years ago for my sins. I'd actually been living in the SW before too. I never go into town as it's just dire and depressing. I've never really settled here tbh and wanted to move away but I'm a bit stuck here at the moment for different reasons. It's certainly not a 'welcoming' place! The kids want out too!

KateofGhent · 06/01/2023 19:35

@byvirtue
Do you mean North Circular Road, Dublin? Just asking

twilightcafe · 06/01/2023 19:35

Abhannmor · 06/01/2023 19:09

Are we allowed to nominate London Boroughs ?

If so its gotta be Newham. Specifically Stratford. It used to be a howling wilderness of dystopia.

But since the development of the Eurostar terminal and massive shopping centre : it's exactly the same.

Agreed. Old Stratford and New Stratford remind me of Berlin before the Wall came down.

Herefordshire. Fred West country.

His 'house of horror' (now demolished) was in Gloucester. Confused

KateofGhent · 06/01/2023 19:37

@TheChristmasElf
Newprt Gwent or Newport Shropshire?

mondaytosunday · 06/01/2023 19:38

@TheBelmont my daughter went to Brighton on a school trip at 16 and hated it! I don't quite see the attraction either (it's ok but wouldn't care to live there particularly).
A friend moved to St Leonard’s on Sea after falling in love with it - not for me at all.

There’s some terrible seaside leisure park area near Brean next to Burnham on Sea that wasn’t very nice at all as I recall. Worst holiday ever.

Brean Sands. Look at the trip advisor reviews!

Not being catty (honestly) but what’s with all the ‘…’ in your post? Some posters do it but I just don’t get why?

Became a habit when doing my masters. I did it to identify an area I hadnt finished writing.

LearnerCook · 06/01/2023 19:41

What a nasty thread.

Doris86 · 06/01/2023 19:42

London has this effect on me.

ErrolTheDragon · 06/01/2023 19:42

My nomination is the newer part of Trumpington on the outskirts of Cambridge. Now I know where the former eastern bloc architects went. Grim and unkempt flatroofed blocks, some quite new build houses falling apart.

How so? It's a pretty tame thread for MN.

Wisbech, Cambs. Spooky place

Oh, but he got about a bit, did old Fred.

creamcoffee · 06/01/2023 19:44

it is a depressing thread tbh

i love london

CUDet · 06/01/2023 19:44

Bristol always made me feel uneasy.

Chaiandchocolate · 06/01/2023 19:45

Slough town centre

Torquay - and it calls itself part of ‘The English Riviera’

Soapnutty · 06/01/2023 19:46

ShirleyPhallus · 06/01/2023 16:11

I feel that way about average suburban towns which have a sad high street and pylons everywhere and always seem to be grey with loads of new build houses.

Nuneaton is quite sad.

Have name changed. I live in Nuneaton and agree, it’s not a nice town, a bit rundown and bleak.
