Sorry it's parking again - people 'reserving' spaces

Someone in our road has decided that one of the parking spaces - which are council owned and free for anyone to use - is 'theirs' and taken to reserving it with a cone 🙄. Annoyingly they actually live in some flats that have their own parking but for some reason choose not to park there. Theyre not very approachable and have another neighbour keeping watch when they are out to make sure the cone isn't touched - it's laughable but also baffling!

There isn't lots of parking here and to have one space taken up makes things tricky at times - we've been shouted at for removing the cone but I cant see why on earth the person thinks they have more right to the place than anyone else.

What can we do? I really dont want to get into any drama but it's getting ridiculous.

Under the cover of darkness, dressed in black, sneak out and remove the cone. Take it far away. If they produce another one, report them to the council

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 04/01/2023 11:42

Put your own cone on top of their cone.

Shout at them for touching your cone.

grapehyacinthisactuallyblue · 04/01/2023 11:44

Report them to council?

Ravageur · 04/01/2023 11:45

I nearly busted my toe kicking one of them fuckers out of a parking space once. So my suggestion is whatever the others say - I know that they will be unanimous in their fury and come up with a devious plan

LynneBenfield · 04/01/2023 11:59

A local man does the same in the street behind my mother. Everyone lets it go as he is very elderly and struggles with walking, so couldn’t manage parking several houses’ (or further) away. Could this be the case with your person? Though obviously not using their allocated space is a weird one, unless it is awkward/tiny/far away

gogohmm · 04/01/2023 12:03

Just remove the cone at night

This made me burst out laughing 😂

AboutTheYoungIdea · 04/01/2023 12:05

@LynneBenfield no not at all, he's a middle aged man with a van who goes out regularly, I assume to work. The space he reserves is right next to the ones that are allocated to his flats!

There are about 8 spaces for the flats but not everyone who lives there has a car - including his 'minder' who yells at people despite it literally not affecting her! Then there are 3 spaces for anyone to use which get snapped up by whoever gets in first. No reason at all that I can see why he needs that particular spot.

Report them to the council for fly-tipping on the public highway.

Comefromaway · 04/01/2023 12:07

Someone used to do that and I just moved the cone and parked. One time I was reverse parking and I didn't see the cone so I drove over it and squashed it.

Eastereggsboxedupready · 04/01/2023 12:07

Just park in his space..
One of our neighbours goes berserk if anyone parks outside her window as it blocks her light. She parks outside her ndn window.
And batshit woman owns a carpark attached to her house.. Locked empty..

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 04/01/2023 12:09

So what if the woman yells at you? Just say that it's not his space and you need it.

Don't argue, don't shout, don't listen. Just do what you need to do. But perhaps buy a motion sensor dashcam in case he does anything stupid to your car.

WombatChocolate · 04/01/2023 12:10

This would infuriate me. I would move it multiple times and park there. If anyone commented, I would ask why they think one individual can reserve a public space. In all liklihood there would be no answer or a crap invalid one, to which I would reply and point that out and continue to move the cone. I’d also thapoint out, that. If they have special circummstannnncccces T. Hey. Sould connnnntatc. C o. U ncil.

starfishmummy · 04/01/2023 12:20

Call the council street services dept who round here are pretty good at moving unofficial cones and other stuff off the street. They won't say who reported it.

😂😂😂 Brilliant

SnowlayRoundabout · 04/01/2023 12:34

Remove cone, park there, tell the minder it's a public parking spot. And repeat. See if you can recruit the neighbours to do the same.

This is the most sensible, low conflict way to deal with it.

lieselotte · 04/01/2023 12:38

I'd just move the cone. If the other neighbour comes out and shouts at me, so what?

They have probably nicked the cone from somewhere anyway.

ProfessionalWeirdo · 04/01/2023 12:38

Someone near me does exactly the same thing. I asked the local council if it was permitted, and they assure me that it isn't. The only people allowed to put cones out are the police and the council. Putting a cone out without permission counts as obstruction.

Hoppinggreen · 04/01/2023 12:39

Just move it and park there. Who cares if you get yelled at?

I wonder if there is a restriction in the parking at his flats that says cars only, no vans / campers/ caravans. But I would still move the cone if I needed to park there, my logic being that my car is road taxed, the cone isn’t.

Englishash · 04/01/2023 12:43

Absolutely remove the cone and chuck it a skip far away. If he gets another do the same and do it til he gives up. I wonder where he got his cone ? Nicked off a roadside corden somewhere I suspect. Go on. It'll give you some comedy gold if nothing else and serve this idiot right

Definitely! Although where I live there is a council come that was abandoned last summer(!!!) aftrt theu filled a hole in, and no one has appropriated it for their own parking purposes!! I suppose I should take my own advice and report it!!
