What to do when there is so much stuff you can't see the mantle clock...simply add the clock to the pile of stuff!!

DH has sent me this gem....he likes a fixer-upper and I'm a bit worried! 😮

Nothing that a skip (or two) and a sledgehammer couldn’t sort out.

Stupidbonfire · 03/01/2023 22:46

I quite like it…. In terms of potential. Garden a good size. Well constructed

Posts like these don’t sit easily with me. This strikes me as someone elderly or who couldn’t cope and has either died or had to leave their home.

Some people have to sell in a hurry, or are just in a state of chaos and the house they are selling reflects it. I remember seeing a house on Rightmove, and for some bizarre reason, there was a photo of a pile of black bags. The focus was on the bags... the camera had zoomed in on them. Very strange.

Nevermindthesquirrels · 03/01/2023 23:07

I don't like this. Without a fail when there's a title like this, it's always very obviously a probate sale of an elderly persons home that's made into a laughing stock.

boatyardblues · 03/01/2023 23:16

Agree about the probate/elderly resident point. Generally it looks to have good light and a lovely big garden. The newish dormer extension on the neighbouring house suggests a well-maintained property on at least one side. If you removed the current furniture and belongings it looks to be a well-constructed house with great potential. I’d rather do up a house like this than spend a much larger amount of money on a recently improved house where the work isn’t quite to my taste. We bought our first house from an elderly couple. The decor wasn’t to our taste but they’d spent their money where it mattered - DPC, new roof, double-glazing. It was rock solid - a great first home.

Jesus Christ! Can tell I live 'in the north'
£400k for what looks like a hell of a lot of work!

BadlydoneHelen · 03/01/2023 23:24

This is a really mean thread- looking at the listing made me sad

WorrieaboutFIL · 03/01/2023 23:26

Elderly person, possible they have passed

watchfulwishes · 03/01/2023 23:26

upfucked · 03/01/2023 23:06

Me too.

Me three.

Just mean-spirited.

flooflo · 03/01/2023 23:27

Aww clearly an elderly/vulnerable person

RedHouseWins · 03/01/2023 23:27

Gosh that could be lovely. I hope the owners loved it.

LadyVictoriaSponge · 03/01/2023 23:30

I hate these “look at this house to mock” threads, this is clearly an elderly persons house who has either died or gone into a home.

Agree, it's not something people should be laughing at.

This. I was going to say the game thing. That home must have had someone very sick it elderly in it, and taking care of people in that situation is often incredibly difficult and you don't have time to keep everything in order. It's even worse if you're ill or old yourself and have no support.

It's nothing a good clean and sort out won't fix.

They won’t read it. It’s free publicity for the house if anything.

Family might though. Regardless it's not a nice thing to do.

BadlydoneHelen · 03/01/2023 23:53

It's not 'free publicity', it's sniggering at an elderly person's home

Guavafish1 · 04/01/2023 00:07

I know the area and its not far from Twickenham and Hounslow. Reasonable price too... I suspect it will go quick... lots of cash buyers too.

Good price too.... needs a complete renovation, just depends on what your plans will be in the future.

FatFilledTrottyPuss · 04/01/2023 01:02

There’s some beautiful furniture in that house and I bet it’s got some unspoiled original features too.
I also live up north so can’t comment on the price but I bet someone could easily make it beautiful again.

Well, to be very blunt, they're hardly likely to see it in here are they? And if family see it & are offended, tough, they should have been more involved so it wasn't in this state.

@oldfarmgirl I don't really see the issue?! clutter wise I've seen far worse on RM.

you & DH really do need to discuss the level of 'needs modernisation/renovating/bulldozing' you're prepared to take on & how much money you can spend on it v how much it needs.

to ME on a quick look at the photos it doesn't look like the building is in great condition and I'd I'd be wanting a GOOD survey done. plus electrics/drains/anything else I could get.

tradies are hard to get and the cost of them & materials is through the roof.

Absolutely agree.

I know it is unlikely they or if they had any remaining family read it themselves but it is still in bad taste to ridicule the home of someone who is/was elderly, frail and/or disabled and obviously struggling before having to leave their home.

It is also sad they were not afforded some dignity (whether they died or finally had to move into care) and the home cleared before posting the listing for ndn to have a good gawk, or a bad attempt at MN forum entertainment, at how they lived.

Procrastination4 · 04/01/2023 02:08

Agree with all the posters who think the original post is insensitive.

Chartreuse45 · 04/01/2023 02:34

The framework around the loo definitely suggests an elderly and/or disabled owner. I think someone is going to be very happy with that house. After all everyone renovates or at least redecorates, so it's probably not a great difference. Also you don't have to think whether you could live with it or not!
