Argos, there’s never anything in stock and you can’t see anything before you buy it.
Apart from WHS (of course), Argos was my first thought as well. I still never quite know if some of their old shops are still open or not, as they seem to remain with all the branding but look dead inside – and it’s not like they usually have big piles of stock inside as a clue. Have they all/some of them moved into Sainsbury’s already or is that still in process?
They’re basically like the internet in shop form – except that the internet has magnitudes more stuff available, often at similar prices; although, granted, if it’s in stock, you can buy it and walk away with it immediately, which not even Amazon prime can offer. Also, they used to be good for very cheap and cheerful (veneered chipboard) furniture, but they seem to have stopped that now and gone upmarket – which I would have thought now makes them a poor cousin of places like Ikea.
One thing that baffles me in ALL large shops is how many of them have loads of tills, taking up a huge amount of prime selling space, that are never ever opened. I would have assumed that they would at least be in use in the run-up to Christmas, but no. Some of them are effectively fenced off with permanently-stored stock and trolleys. What’s the point of that, then?
I also never understand why Aldi and Lidl have seven tills and, not only never use more than 2 or 3 at any time, but will also close till 5, then open till 2, then re-open till 5 again and close till 2 only 5 minutes later. It would make sense if they had set people on set tills, who obviously stop for breaks and toilet visits; but they don’t allocate staff to a till at all – it’s the same people who re-stock the shelves and take all the used baskets back to near the front door!
