Influencers selling gifted clothes?

I don't know but it doesn't sit right with me.
There's a woman who I watch on YouTube
She always posts her everlane hauls and many other companies
With so much free stuff
She's just opened a vinted and Is selling it all
Not for cheap either
I made a offer (lower ) and obviously she declined it (wasn't buying )
And it just made me feel sick
All the free stuff and rather than donating it
She's selling it to make money (after being paid by the brand to promote it )
Doesn't sit right with me
What's everyone's opinions of these influences?

I have absolutely no issue with it.

She'll work to promote the brand, the items are given to her (whether she's also paid for the work or not).

They're hers to do with as chooses.

What exactly is it that you have a problem with?

closethedongdong · 02/01/2023 11:19

Why not donate? She's already been paid to "advertise" the brand
Clearly not a fan of the clothes that much if she's selling every item

Meh. You can't pay your bills with free clothes.

Tamarindtree · 02/01/2023 11:21

Why would someone making money in a perfectly legal way make you feel sick?

Her job is to promote items and after she has reviewed them or shown them off she can do whatever she likes with them, including selling them.

The companies that gifted them to her have received advertising from her, so what exactly is your problem?

NuffSaidSam · 02/01/2023 11:23

They're her clothes, she can do what she likes with them.

Her charity contributions aren't really your business, just like your charity contributions aren't her business.

Tamarindtree · 02/01/2023 11:23

Also you have no idea if any of the money she makes she gives to charity. She may give a percentage of her earnings to charity or she may not. It’s no ones business but her own.

Whattaboutit · 02/01/2023 11:25

Should she be declaring the income for tax purposes? I know it’s fine to sell your own second hand items but is it different if you’re selling items supplied to you in a business context?

Itsbiasedhere · 02/01/2023 11:25

It's part of her business. I have no issues with her selling the clothes.

closethedongdong · 02/01/2023 11:26

It just leaves a bad taste in My mouth
To be on YouTube saying
Just got this and I love it -going to wear it with this -that the other
Then list it for sale the next day is a bit Meh in my eyes

Shesasuperfreak · 02/01/2023 11:27

You were happy to try and buy it though.
It seems only after she declined your offer you changed your mind and grew a conscience.

closethedongdong · 02/01/2023 11:28

I wasn't going to buy it
I tried to see if she would sell lower to see if she was out to make as much as she could ...and she was

Presumably she should pay income tax on the value of the clothes that she receives from the company? I would have thought if she does then you shouldn't have to pay tax again but I'm not an expert by any means (and I think a lot of influences are probably not paying the right tax in the first place!)

Be pleased for someone who has shown initiative and a desire to work and provide for themselves and their family.

Bitterness and envy are not good for you or anyone around you.

You need to step away from the Internet. It's making you do weird and bitter things.

Go for a walk and think about how you'll earn more this year, or how you'll improve your voluntary work.

Don't sit and stew about this woman making her own life choices.

inappropriateraspberry · 02/01/2023 11:34

I sell on toys that have been given to the children. Is that wrong?

There's one influencer, who I won't name but who I love. Shes made a lot if money through YouTube and even gave a Ted talk. She used to buy her own clothes and give honest feedback, which was a mixture of positive and negative. Then I noticed she started doing more amd more sponsored videos and her feedback, of course, was always positive. As much as I liked her and still do like her, I unsubscribed because I couldn't trust her reviews anymore.
It does leave a bad taste - I think because I bought into her and felt let down that she was no longer being straight.
But that's the world of influencers. And they never know when they'll fall out of favour and their earning power will be over. You have to stop watching them to show your displeasure.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 02/01/2023 11:40

I get it, OP - not so much the selling the clothes part, but the inauthenticity of it all. The influencer business model is about people believing in them, and trusting their recommendations. If one minute it’s “I love this so much and will wear it forever” then the item’s on Depop it is clearly a nonsense. Which it is, and which is why this business model is definitely not going to be around much longer! I guess they are milking it while they still can now people have wised up.

PeekAtYou · 02/01/2023 11:41

Maybe the company who sent her stuff will reconsider if she's a good person to send freebies to? Or maybe they will send her freebies that are more to her taste?
I have absolutely no problem with her selling. Like real life, if someone gives you a gift then it's up to them what to do with it. If she's popular enough to live off influencer income then good for her. Would you feel any better if she'd hidden the selling clothes info? Her receiving freebies does not affect your life or anyone else's.
If you don't approve of consumerism then maybe you should consider stopping watching that sort of content ? Influencers make haul videos because there's demand for it in terms of views and engagement. You are one of the people contributing to that.

serenghetti2011 · 02/01/2023 13:14

So if she’d got the lot for Christmas and didn’t like it then is that ok?
the company gifted it so it’s now hers and if she’s not going to wear or make use of it she can do what she wants with it tbh. She perhaps could do with the money or wants to buy some stuff she does like and want but essentially it’s hers to do with what she wants.

you could take a load of stuff to donate if you feel so strongly?

FantaTv · 02/01/2023 13:17

Yawn, hating everything an influencer does, accuse them of avoiding tax etc etc etc. this isn’t Tattle, take it there

Kevinyoutwat · 02/01/2023 13:31

You have to let go of what other people do.
Does it affect your life? No.
Honestly, thinking about what other people do will drive you nuts.

Maybe becuase she isn't a charity and needs to make a living too?

Exasperatednow · 02/01/2023 13:33

She's probably been paid in clothes and the needs to sell the clothes to get actual money. She should be declaring all income.

itsthefinalcountdown1 · 02/01/2023 13:49

I only don't like this when someone advertises something as "never worn" and yet there are pictures of the clothes being worn outside for ads on the girls Instagram 🤢

ineedasweatshirt · 02/01/2023 13:52

What?

Why can't she sell it? I sell my clothes on ebay all the time.

You sound weirdly jealous. Maybe give all your stuff away to charity.
