Happy New Year Mumsnet? What's everyone's plans for the day?

I'm just drinking my first cuppa of the day, in my spot in the kitchen. The window's open so I can hear the birds outside.

Plan for today is to take down the Christmas decs while the girls' dad is about to put them in the loft & then clean the downstairs of the house. It's not too bad so shouldn't take too long.

Depending how long it does take, I want to paint my nails this afternoon. I didn't get round to it yesterday & last weeks is starting to look scruffy. At the very least, I'll take that off.

I don't think the girls will be up for a while yet, or will want to do much when they do get up; they both stayed up later than me last night 🤣

Roast beef for Sunday dinner 😋with yorkshire puds, and a cauliflower-cheese. I'm really looking forward to it, rarely buy beef any more these days.

What about all of you? Any nice plans? 🙂

ssd · 01/01/2023 11:12

Im full of this horrible virus. Dying for a cuppa. Its wet and sleet here, miserable.

LexieLoos · 01/01/2023 11:18

Happy new year all!

@lucysmamreading your posts has inspired me to find 'my spot' to have a cuppa in every morning this year 😊

I've come back to bed with a cuppa as we had a disturbed night with our 3 year old, so DH and I are taking this morning in shifts

Off to the park later for said 3 year old to try out her new big girl bike, and then either a pub lunch or home for slow cooker ham with root veg mash and baby roasties. Adding cauliflower cheese now too!

Good morning and Happy New Year!

We had a lovely lie-in and coffee in bed followed by bacon and sausage sandwiches with the dcs and Ds17's girlfriend who stayed here last night after a NYE party at friends'. They were putting a brave face on but a little delicate this morning I think - ds has now had to go to work, which he wasn't looking forward to.

It's a lovely sunny day here so a big NYD walk is on the cards, followed by TV, jigsaw, finishing the Christmas chocolate and curry for dinner when ds gets home from work.

blackheartsgirl · 01/01/2023 11:24

I had dgd4 over last night to stay. I’m shattered asi barely slept so I’m on the sofa and dgd and dd12 are colouring.

I’ve just took dgd and one of the dogs for a walk and once my ds picks her up at 2 I’m going in the bath and then going back to bed for a bit I’m not feeling that well either. The house can wait till tomorrow

SeekingAnswerz · 01/01/2023 11:25

Happy New Year everybody

I’ve been ill for the past two weeks so just feeling miserable about everything right now. Another day spent coughing and spluttering for me. Health truly is wealth, without health nothing seems enjoyable.

TokyoSushi · 01/01/2023 11:27

I've been for a run and we've taken the Christmas tree/decorations down and I've done a big clean downstairs. Just getting in the shower then off to the supermarket before a roast and Happy Valley tonight.

RudolphTheGreat · 01/01/2023 11:38

I'm still in bed although getting up in a min. No plans today. We had a roast yesterday and I made enough so we can reheat it for today so no cooking. Will probably watch some telly, crochet and read. Might go for a walk later.

sensibleheartxo · 01/01/2023 11:39

Happy new year everyone!

I’m at work until 2pm, DP & I didn’t stay up last night so I’m feeling ok today. We’re going to my parents later for steak pie. They are moving at the end of the month after 37 years (my entire life) in their current house so this will be the last family get together there which is quite sad. Hopefully we won’t stay too long, I’m looking forward to getting my pjs on and getting my notebook out to plan some exciting trips and activities for the year.

Giggorata · 01/01/2023 11:47

Happy New Year to everyone!
Tea and dog walk, followed by champagne brunch and a sofa afternoon watching films.
We have chosen one each. DH's is a critically acclaimed monochrome epic about lighthouse keepers, and I will inflict something very different upon him, science fiction or horror, with lots of special effects. 😀

lucysmam · 01/01/2023 11:54

@LexieLoos It's the perfect start to my day - almost every day I sit here & drink my first cuppa of the day. I've been considering whether to add a cushion or two for when I'm sat here. It's like my "command centre" - I do all my paperwork/pay bills/can see the calendar and any letters on the fridge front/use the table for painting.

I have an evening spot too in my massive chair. It's kind of like the Lemsip chair from the ad years ago that gave the person a hug when they sat down (at least, I think it was Lemsip!).

Decorations are half down, I stopped for a coffee, and some paracetamol. I seem to have toothache developing 😢Hopefully they'll sort it!

So sorry to hear this, you are very right. Hope you start to feel better soon.

Iwritethissittinginthekitchensink · 01/01/2023 11:57

Mmm I’m hungry for roast beef now seeing as it seems to be the lunch of choice for today!

ilovebagpuss · 01/01/2023 11:58

Happy New Year. Too much fizz last night so its a lazy morning with IV coffee in bed. Just had a shower. Both DD's in bed DD13 getting over the virus so is still wiped out. DD15 not been sleeping great.
Plans are to de-dec the halls and tidy up. Sort out presents to bedrooms. Food shop not coming until later in the day so will have to scrabble about for freezer food. Plans changed and we were supposed to be away hence the funny time of the order.
Might have to be pigs in blankets and roasties with veg.
Back to work Tuesday so need to be organised for then. Washing and ironing mountain to tackle.
I have also gone on a declutter vibe so will try and do another drawer or cupboard later.

MeMyBooksAndMyCats · 01/01/2023 11:58

Supposed to be having drinks tonight as wasn't well yesterday but I can't be bothered. Think I'm coming down with the flu. Sad

Had a nice morning with ds7 playing board games though.

TangledWebofMincemeatDeception · 01/01/2023 12:05

Good morning @lucysmam, and all! Flowers Happy New Year to each of you!

We’ve both been ill for almost two weeks now, so we’re still taking it easy. We basically had to skip Christmas all together. 😞 We did get a Chinese takeaway last night which was nice.

We’ve just had coffee in bed. DH had panettone with his.

We’ve got no plans for today, really. I’m desperate to be up and about again but I’m just not well enough yet. I think we’ll read/use our tablets/watch a couple of films over the course of the day. I’ll be on MN a fair bit, and I’ll also play a bit of Hay Day (my happy relaxing place!).

We’ve showered and got fresh, clean bedding on (have changed it every few days throughout) so at least we can feel fresh and clean.

I’ve switched off the outdoor lights, but the tree will be lit up until 12th Night.

I’m going to write in my new journal/planner. I’ve not got any firm NY resolutions (don’t really believe it’s an effective way of making changes), but I have been feeling like my body no longer enjoys the effects of alcohol so I’m taking a good long break from that, with a view to possibly giving it up all together. I’ve also got an underlying health issue which would be greatly helped by being more careful to look after myself well in terms of what I’m eating/drinking. I feel ready to go back to full time low-carbing, so I’m starting that again today, with a view to continuing indefinitely. Just need to create daily habits and wait for my brain to catch up!

I’m going to work on Christmas poncing throughout the year in 2023, as a mindfulness exercise and also as a distraction technique when I want to snack (because who doesn’t enjoy snacking on tasty things??), so I’ll be digging out my little fabric stash to start making some ornaments for the tree. Probably won’t actually work on them today, but I’ll have it ready for when I’m feeling better.

I’m going to write up a charity shop wish list, as I’m committed to a no-spend-at-all on new items in 2023 (but for a modest list of certain things I actually need to buy new).

I’ve not thought about what I’ll make for dinner...probably mash and peppered loin steaks with fried cabbage, sprouts and carrots.

I want to call my (grown up) children for a bit of a chat later, but again it depends on how well I end up feeling.

ApplePippa · 01/01/2023 12:05

Very slow start to the day. We had a quiet NYE staying in last night, but were up late.

DB and SiL are coming round for a meal this evening, so today will be spent pottering around having a bit of a tidy up and getting ready for that. Slow cooker is loaded with a beef casserole, so minimal cooking to be done later.

Christmas decorations will start to come down tomorrow.

gingercat02 · 01/01/2023 12:05

Happy New Year @lucysmam
We are all only up and dressed.

Full English, walk on the beach, roast lamb for dinner. Bit of telly tonight.

Quiet day but we are all off until the 9th so we have a busy week planned

SeekingAnswerz · 01/01/2023 12:06

@PineCone74 thank you x

LexieLoos · 01/01/2023 12:08

@lucysmam An evening spot sounds dreamy 😍 We're in the middle of decorating an office/study, and I have visions of sitting in there at night on a comfy chair, a cosy lamp on and a good book. Current reality is it has a toy kitchen, bike, trike, desk, and Christmas presents

Lots of lovely new years day plans from everyone 😊

stargirl1701 · 01/01/2023 12:15

Big walk! Reading. Steak pie for dinner. Champagne. Board game/s. DCs to bed much earlier than last night!

All good things.

JoyeuxNarwhal · 01/01/2023 12:34

We usually do a NYD walk but weather is uninspiring here and we've all been under the weather this week so planning to skip it. Just had a great brunch (used my instant pot for the first time) while watching last night's Hootenanny. Going to make lamb madras/bombay roast potatoes for dinner. And do some more of the fiendish jigsaw my sis gave me! Dc (teens) are playing collaboratively together on video games for the first time in ages and dh is farting about with musical stuff. Overall a lovely relaxed day Smile

ssd · 01/01/2023 13:06

Lucysmam, can you post a pic of your cozy space, to inspire us all?

Only if its not too outing of course

StormObelisk · 01/01/2023 13:11

Reading, a swim and coffee with a friend. I’m going to start knitting this tank top this evening. Dinner will be whatever comes out of the freezer when I get home.

Happy New Year Mumsnet? What's everyone's plans for the day?
CoffeandTiaMaria · 01/01/2023 13:23

So far I have boxed up bits for DS and family to post on Tuesday, tidied kitchen, made bread and butter pudding, filled dw, prepped mashed potatoes to put in oven for lunch, cooked gammon in slow cooker on brown sugar so lunch is all ready. Cauliflower cheese already made, a really delicious meal 😋
Chatted to DD on phone for 45 minutes.
DH has disappeared on a walk with DDog, I have vacuumed and tidied the living room, fire set to light later, vases of dying flowers put in compost bin.
Now having dinner while watching television, an afternoon of knitting, watching films and drink tea, perfect!
