Fireworks - cost of living crisis ?

KangarooKenny · 01/01/2023 07:26

I don’t know where the cost of living crisis is, but it mustn’t be where I live. I’ve never known so many fireworks on NYE, they went on and on and on.
My poor dog was a wreck.

Not everyone is struggling. NYE is one of the few days fireworks are acceptable.

SchrodingersKettle · 01/01/2023 07:30

sale of fireworks should be banned for domestic use

The ones on TV in London were well OTT. My 12 yo dd sputtered in indignation - so much environmental damage for what? A load of fireworks we really don’t need. Keep it to a minute, stop charging people to go and see them, and give the surplus cash to people who need it (people on Ukraine hardly going to be comforted by loads of exploding fireworks, and in CoL crisis just burning money is an insult).

happy and peaceful new year to everyone

stbrandonsboat · 01/01/2023 07:31

We had a few here, but not many. Some people will find the money regardless of the cost of things. I'm sorry your dog was so stressed. I feel sorry for the pets and wildlife when these stupid things are being let off. It's time to ban them to the public.

Not everyone is struggling. There was a thread asking how much people are spending on holidays this year, that was eye opening / watering!
I love fireworks.

midnightfirework · 01/01/2023 07:35

I guess people have decided it will bring a bit of joy in their lives

KalvinPhillipsBoots · 01/01/2023 07:35

Oh if people are not allowed to enjoy themselves one night a year without the usual moaners trying to ruin it!

Caspianberg · 01/01/2023 07:36

I don’t think they are that expensive are they? I mean I they can be, but there was stalls outside our local supermarkets the last few days and they were mainly €10 for a large looking pack. I think most people who buy and set of at home only buy one of these cheap packs as you always just set a couple max from residential houses.

Overthebow · 01/01/2023 07:38

Some people are struggling, others are cutting back a bit, some people not affected at all. The majority can afford fireworks, they aren’t expensive.

dolor · 01/01/2023 07:39

Oh that's nice, mock a genuine crisis because a few fireworks went off at midnight.

I have a dog, and I also loathe fireworks, but don't joke about the CoL crisis. It's not funny.

royalrecording · 01/01/2023 07:44

If you’re bothered about your dog, just say that. You don’t have to try to make it ‘relevant’ by bringing up COL and make out people are being irresponsible.

Feel free to point I where I said that people are being ‘irresponsible’.

It was bloody awful here. A full half hour of noisy fireworks (1150-1220) and they were loud and incessant. I was so stressed by the end of them as I just wanted to sleep.

I agree that they are unnecessary, also antisocial, and cannot be good for the environment. A relative is an eye surgeon and gets called in most years to deal with bonfire night and NYE horror stories.

RainyDaysAndGreySkies · 01/01/2023 08:03

I went to my local shopping centre yesterday and it was absolutely rammed full of people buying things in every single shop. Then a huge fireworks display on my council estate :)

MarshaBradyo · 01/01/2023 08:07

Where I am the London skyline lit up with displays. It looked incredible but no pets here.

TangoAcid · 01/01/2023 08:08

Maybe you need to get out more then. Experience a bit more life rather than your little bubble. People are genuinely struggling to pay their bills, feed their families and you come to make a nasty sarcastic post on MN. Do you think it's all a lie? Do you honestly think people are lying about not being able to afford to live?

kitcat15 · 01/01/2023 08:11

I love fireworks…I watched the London ones on to…..they were amazing…..I watched the ones round here ( with dog in partners jacket…he’s fine then)…..I think firework displays lift your mood…….I personally don’t know anyone who wouldn’t be able to afford a £50 box of fire works….. even in this day and age

Sprogonthetyne · 01/01/2023 08:15

It's an avoidable cost that people choose to spend on because it brings them happiness. Much like owning a dog...

Given the cost of buying a dog, and the associated vet fees, I'm surprised so many can afford to have one or more.

blobby10 · 01/01/2023 08:23

I hate the NYe ones - they never happened before the millennium and now the world and his wife sets them off . - I’m not sleeping well but had dropped off around 2330 only to be woken and have an anxiety attack as I thought I was being burgled/bombed/assaulted etc etc. took me ages to calm down and I didn’t sleep well afterwards x why can’t they just go pfft pfft and shower the pretty colours? Why do they have to bang so blooming loud!

BorisJohnsonsHair · 01/01/2023 08:34

I wish people would stop saying "my poor dog".

Fireworks happen every year, several times a year and have done since long before your dog was born.

Maybe consider what other people have to put up with for once.

Where I live I have to put up with barking dogs every single day of the year. Drives me utterly insane. But that's okay apparently.

And for what it's worth, I don't want dogs to be upset but just wish dog owners would realise that they cause distress to others too. So stop fucking moaning!!

LlynTegid · 01/01/2023 08:36

Don't agree with them. However one of the responses to times of crisis is often to make a bigger thing of 'events', even at the expense of other things. And there is the trend to upscale events too.

I'd like to see fireworks be organised licensed displays only, and on a few designated days a year. At least then you could take precautions to minimise any impact on pets or those with PTSD/ND.

SabbatWheel · 01/01/2023 08:40

Maybe they spent their cash on fireworks instead of chugging bucketloads of alcohol down their necks.

I love to see fireworks and hear them (the idea of PC silent fireworks doesn’t flick my switch, they’re meant to be noisy!)

I keep livestock - we just make sure they are in on nights when fireworks are likely to be used, not a problem.

We're a "global" capital. Wee out in a show to keep up appearances etc ists massive marketing thing. The year 2000 changed everything with new year.

Why should they stop charging? No doubt if it was free, people would complain about "tax payers money blah blah blah" also by charging it controls numbers and keeps certain types of people away (i.e. trouble makers)

Does your 12yo sputter in indignation at all the kids being driven to school that is lit up like Blackpool all day? Or refuse to get in the car for a short journey and will only walk or cycle to where she needs to go, even if it's chucking it down?

Pineconederby · 01/01/2023 08:43

Agree with you, OP. I watched the London display on TV and was appalled at the amount it must have cost, given the state of the NHS, schools, social care etc. Literally burning money! And the environmental damage… Locally, people were setting off fireworks between 5pm and 1am. Pets terrified, youngest DC kept being woken up. So so selfish!

bellinisurge · 01/01/2023 08:47

Waste of public money. Happy for one "salute " as year changes but not the same endless and expensive palava in every town. Stream the London ones if they want a big expensive civic thing. Which, presumably ties up an ambulance or two
