The ready to eat type - would you still eat it?
Just found it in the fridge.

No, not with fish

mincepiepie · 31/12/2022 16:28

No

SirChenjins · 31/12/2022 16:28

No - that’s a bit too past it for me

It's a no from me even though I would be devastated. Nearly a week over, not a chance

SwishSwishBisch · 31/12/2022 16:29

If it’s vacuum packed, I’d probably brave it.

AinmÁlainn · 31/12/2022 16:30

Is the packet sealed? If it smells OK I'd cook it in a creamy pasta sauce

tedgran · 31/12/2022 16:30

Yes, but I'm quite old and less worried about best before or use by dates!

harktheherold · 31/12/2022 16:31

I'm pretty flexible with smoked fish but that's a bit too old for me - I'd bin it. Shame tho

byvirtue · 31/12/2022 16:32

Smoking is a preservation method, if it’s sealed it will have had no access to bacteria and likely be fine. I’m still eating open smoked salmon that “went off on the 25th”

Porridgeislife · 31/12/2022 16:33

If it’s vacuum packed then yes. If it’s off, you’ll be able to smell it instantly.

onedayiwillmissthis · 31/12/2022 16:36

Definitely not if you are taking any medication that reduces stomach acid, such as omeprazole or ranitidine.

Playdoughcaterpillar · 31/12/2022 16:38

Yes if it's sealed and smells OK. Bad fish really smells, you'll know!

Can I just ask why?
I'm on lansoprazole
Is it because you wouldn't have enough acid to kill the bacteria?

Justcallmebebes · 31/12/2022 16:40

If it's vacuum packed, been stored in the fridge and smells OK then yes. The smell will tell you if it's safe to eat

Craftybodger · 31/12/2022 16:42

Yes, as long as it smelt and felt OK.

Lcb123 · 31/12/2022 16:42

I would. Don’t really believe in use by dates…

MariahsBaubles · 31/12/2022 16:50

Open it and see. If it smells cheesey then chuck it away. If it smells of salmon enjoy.
I suspect it will smell cheesey by now. I wouldn't

MariahsBaubles · 31/12/2022 16:50

Let us know how it turns out!

Greenshake · 31/12/2022 17:01

God no.

PikachusSmarterBrother · 31/12/2022 17:02

Nope 😮

onedayiwillmissthis · 31/12/2022 18:35

The stomach acid of humans is high, which is hypothesised to be linked to our evolution as scavengers/hunters. Strong stomach acid to kill bacteria/parasites.

Reduce that and you are indeed increasing possibility of problems from any dubious foods.

AdelaideRo · 31/12/2022 18:38

I'm normally pretty lax (yesterday I ate a yogurt which expired on 24th) but I wouldn't touch week out of date fish (even smoked).

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 31/12/2022 18:40

You could cook it, e.g. with scrambled eggs.

Freesia41 · 31/12/2022 18:42

Nope. Have had food poisoning that lasted nearly a month so no way would it be worth the risk!

Roselilly36 · 31/12/2022 18:44

No, bin it.
