New Year's eve movie or TV boxset recommendations, please, to save my New Year

Just that. Have craply failed to organise going out for New Year so looking for a really good film or possibly a TV show to binge-watch tonight.

Me and my dh who will be joining me in a night in front of the telly with a drink have very different tastes in film and TV; however we can both agree on liking e.g. the following:

The Full Monty
4 Weddings
Room With a View
Amelie
The Life of Brian
Paddington 1 & 2

So comedy/rom com would be good - can be quirky/indie. Or foreign movies would be good too - French, Italian, German etc. etc. He likes films with explosions - I don't. No sci-fi or murder please. No superheroes.

Or if it's TV, we both love:
The IT Crowd
Derry Girls
um...

Any suggestions, please, to save my New Year? 🙂

If you like the Full Monty, you might like Brassed Off, Pride and/or Made in Dagenham?

YogaLite · 31/12/2022 11:34

Midnight in Paris!!!

Flowersandbutterflies · 31/12/2022 12:30

Thanks, @BlueRaincoat1 , but seen them all!

@YogaLite - not heard of Midnight in Paris - will have a look. 🙂

Any other suggestions?

Have you seen "About Time"? My go to feel good movie

CaveMum · 31/12/2022 13:39

Haven’t watched them yet but I have the following lined up as possibles for this evening:

The Banshees of Inisherin (dark comedy with Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleason, on Disney)
See How They Run (murder mystery comedy with Saoirse Ronan and Sam Rockwell, on Disney)
Elvis (Baz Lurhman biopic about The King, on Rakuten)
The Glass Onion (murder mystery comedy with Daniel Craig, on Netflix)

Flowersandbutterflies · 31/12/2022 14:19

Thanks, @viktoria - not heard of that one!

I'll look at the Banshees one, @CaveMum - though know dh saw the last one on your list already and wild horses wouldn't get him to watch the Elvis one!

Difficulties of finding something that appeals to two people with very different tastes!

Any other suggestions, oh wise Mumsnetters?

Ooh, About Time looking good, thank you @viktoria ! 🙂 Seems to work on the heart-warming front, good for NYE.

About Time is brilliant and features a nye party

TheaBrandt · 31/12/2022 14:29

Don’t watch if you have recently lost your dad though it’s basically father son love story my friend whose dad just died was in bits

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 31/12/2022 14:31

About Time is a good call

Pride is an even better call

Moonrise Kingdom, Peanut Butter Falcon, Juno or The Grand Budapest Hotel for quirky fun

AutumnCrow · 31/12/2022 14:32

DP wants to watch Dinner For One, the B&W original.

AutumnCrow · 31/12/2022 14:34

Sorry, so whatever you have planned sounds terrific tbh, OP.

I've been thinking about watching a series from scratch that I've completely missed out on to date. I've never watched Cormoran Strike or GoT or loads of stuff really.

Georgieporgie29 · 31/12/2022 14:36

We really enjoyed Bullet train as a family

Topbird29 · 31/12/2022 14:49

The following would be my suggestions...
The Artist - subtitled. Good and pulls at the heart strings at some points.
Games Night is fun
Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon - is martial arts, but in a stylish way and with a good story

Watched Avatar again this week. Forgot how good that was.

Want to see See How They Run ourselves, so may suggest that.

Flowersandbutterflies · 31/12/2022 15:32

Ooh thanks, some cracking suggestions.

Think About Time is winning out here. Though Dinner For One might be worth a quick watch (only 18 mins and apparently the most repeated show in Germany ever)!

Flowersandbutterflies · 31/12/2022 15:34

Like the sound of Moonrise Kingdom too!

OP posts:
Flowersandbutterflies · 31/12/2022 15:34

And Pride maybe - is that a NYE kind of film though?

Can I check if it's OK for someone who's father has dementia (my dh)?

Thanks.

"Can I check if it's OK for someone who's father has dementia (my dh)?

Thanks."

I personally would say that's fine. But then I'm also somebody who loves films where you can have a few good tears in your eyes - especially as the overall message of the film is positive and optimistic.

As per a previous poster - I also absolutely loved Pride.

Flowersandbutterflies · 31/12/2022 17:01

Do you have Apple TV? If so, watch CODA. So funny, so touching. So good.

Pride isn't NYE themed at all, but is a fabulous film.
