So just going to start off. My boyfriend (who is the father of my son) has a brother and wife who I can just tell despise me

It was recently our sons (1st) birthday. Everyone either side asked for something to get him. I give little things I don’t expect family to get massive gifts. His brother never asked. I gave the benefit of the doubt in that maybe with 3 kids and a loan to pay for the recent wedding, they didn’t have much spare.

The amount of gifts doesn’t bother me! He’s 1 and tbh I ended up asking for family to buy him pjs or clothes because he doesn’t need anymore toys etc! It’s the thought in them and family time that matter on the birthday.

so, they hand a wrapped gift. I thought this is nice!

they got him a girl toy? Now again it’s not me wanting a big lavish gift - but at least buy a gift for my son, that is for boys?

I thought it was really thoughtless and people have agreed with me

My boyfriend sits on the fence a lot he wants to be neutral but him and other family members see his brothers wife steers him and pupeterrs him a lot. But wow

id rather they just didn’t wrap that gift and gave it to a little girl instead

No arguments over toys and gender etc here please - this gift was clearly given as a big message of “watch us be completely thoughtless”

It is not a girl toy. Your attitude towards toys as boy and girl toys is deeply damaging. do your in-laws know you hold these views? Do you think they were trying to make a point of the sexism?

DuplicateUserName · 30/12/2022 22:19

FewWinesIn · 30/12/2022 22:11

@DuplicateUserName I mean I’m not but didn’t realise how bloody touchy people get

No-one's getting touchy.

We're just pointing out that dolls and prams are not 'girl's' toys, since we don't live in the 1950s.

Lj8893 · 30/12/2022 22:19

I don’t understand what your issue is? That it’s a regift?

ConfusedmumUC · 30/12/2022 22:20

Oh shit! If he plays with dolls and prams now he might grow up to be a caring father who cares for his babies, quick, burn it!!!!

healthadvice123 · 30/12/2022 22:24

@FewWinesIn well
What is it then ?
You were not expecting gift but got one
You don't mind a re gift
So its the fact its a pram
Have you made it clear you would hate a pram for your ds?

Whowhatwherewhenwhynow · 30/12/2022 22:28

So op is the problem that you think they purposely gave you a used toy and a doll because they thought it would annoy you?

If so surely the best response is to go overboard and thank them profusely for the wonderful gift? Show no annoyance what so ever?

Pinkflipflop85 · 30/12/2022 22:43

Are you always really ungrateful?

Or is it only when you're scared the 'girl toy' might hurt your precious boy?

bizzywiththefizzy · 30/12/2022 22:44

😂My toddler son had a little buggy in the 90's that his teddies got a hurl in . You're getting your knickers in a twist about nothing .

determinedtomakethiswork · 30/12/2022 22:51

Just leave any present, going to your partner and keep out of it from now on.

determinedtomakethiswork · 30/12/2022 22:51

Present, giving!

piedbeauty · 30/12/2022 22:59

It’s not the bloody toy.

That's literally what your post is about!

Yabu.

Brefugee · 30/12/2022 23:00

Some backpeddalling there OP.
So the issue wasn't that they weren't going to give DC a present
Or that it was expensive
but that it was a "girl toy" (your words)

What is the ACTUAL issue you have?

SortinMyMH · 30/12/2022 23:03

At that age i got my son a doll and pram! As he loved it at toddler groups.
Hes now 17!
Its at my Inlaws now which my 2 yr old ds plays with!

Girl toy lmao

So my dd shouldn't have the remote control dinosaur either then that she loves as could be classed as a ' boy toy'
Or her blue dino pjs!

inappropriateraspberry · 30/12/2022 23:05

You're angry that they bought your son a present for his 1st birthday? Get over yourself.

Azandme · 30/12/2022 23:07

A doll and a pram isn't a "girl toy". I'm cringing for you and your embedded bias.

NatalieIsFreezing · 30/12/2022 23:14

I bought my son a doll when I was expecting DC2. It's weird you think that has anything to do with vaginas OP.

Kids love pushing things on wheels. He wasn't too into that doll but pushed his toy penguin around with pride.

sanityisamyth · 30/12/2022 23:22

Did he need to use his penis to make it work?!

Wisterical · 30/12/2022 23:30

@FewWinesIn you can tell they despise you because they bought your child a doll and pram? That's a really, really weird attitude you have.

NeedAHoliday2021 · 30/12/2022 23:32

They’re clearly trying to turn your son gay.

NeedAHoliday2021 · 30/12/2022 23:33

Out of interest, does your dh ever push dc pushchair? I assume he’s too manly for that?

Mwnci123 · 30/12/2022 23:40

They might hate you but in this instance you're being over sensitive.

HeatAndEat · 30/12/2022 23:49

Probably the boys who pushed dolls prams as toddlers are all transgender now.

This is where is started!

Moonshine86 · 30/12/2022 23:53

A doll and a pram for a one year old? Regardless of gender it’s too old for him

Natty13 · 30/12/2022 23:53

They're clearly not that had if the only "crime" you can come up with is that they gave your son a toy pram.

Maybe it's you who doesn't like them? I get it, when you really dislike someone the smallest thing they do passes you off. But a mature person would recognise and acknowledge that in themselves.

InTheMiddle23 · 31/12/2022 00:08

Well you know what to get for their kids.....
