Oh my fucking Christ.

Has anyone else seen this? It's both fantastic and fucking horrible.

Absolutely love the director and CF/BG, but Jesus I'm sad now.

yes it was rather gruesome in parts, but showed how daft men can be

LlynTegid · 30/12/2022 15:55

Anything with Colin Farrell in, I give a miss. Just don't like him at all.

mynameisnotkate · 30/12/2022 15:56

I thought it was brilliant and disturbing. It really stuck in my head …

sixfingergoon · 30/12/2022 15:58

Jenny 😭

I feel like I'm going to have to watch Naked Gun or a Carry On film now. It's definitely one that I'm going to lie awake thinking about, even more so than In Bruges.

Yes! It was both brilliant and awful. Stayed with me for weeks after watching it at the cinema. So much to think about and mull over. A clever film but one that I’d hesitate to recommend!

sixfingergoon · 30/12/2022 17:46

I'd be happy to recommend it, but only to people who are in an ok place mentally. It'd be too much for someone already in a bad place!

I watched it last night and found it far too depressing.

I did think Colin Farrel was good though. No danger of him being type cast.

junebirthdaygirl · 31/12/2022 04:43

I loved the acting and the scenery. I especially loved Barry Keoghan as l think he is an amazing actor. But the storyline caught me unawares and l was quite disturbed by it. However l was glad l went to see it. I read that Colin Farrell had send its more disturbing than in Bruges and people had thought how is that possible but then realised yea its possible!!!

Mummabear94 · 15/01/2023 00:54

Holy cats. I watched this on Netflix. I was drawn in by the great acting and astounding cinematography. But the plot was crushing. As a parent, i just don’t have emotional or psychological energy for this much strife, conflict and unkindness. I just couldn’t finish it. I gave up when it was apparent that more fingers were going to take on a life/death of their own. Too awful.

I do too but made an exception for this. he was genuinely very good In it.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 15/01/2023 01:01

I thought it was tremendous. Colin Farrell was extremely good, but then I'm a bit < rubs thighs> where he's concerned.
Poor Jenny.

margegunderson · 15/01/2023 01:03

The wee donkey 😳

Jenny! 😭

I know this is a couple of weeks old but I didn't want to start a new thread. I watched this two days ago and the character Dominic has stayed with me. So touching so perfectly portrayed. I just can't get him out of my head

Sillybanana · 15/01/2023 16:51

Thought it was really overrated! The whole story didn’t work for me as a premise. Since found out the ignoring/cutting off nose to spite face is meant to represent “the troubles”. I felt sad watching Colin Farrell’s character being tortured for a nonsensical reason. Went to bed half way through. Hi

I think for people who understand the Troubles and we're part of it is quite hard hitting.

I'm half Irish and watched it with my parents. They got the metaphor straight away while I didn't. I still enjoyed it overall.

LadyEloise1 · 15/01/2023 17:09

Ah - I didn't know the cutting off of the fingers was representing The Troubles.

How would I know that?

I think it's definitely overrated.
But as I get older I realise - what do I know 🤷‍♀️

Flerken · 15/01/2023 17:10

I enjoyed the performances, except for Brendan Gleason, he was just an unfathomable grumpy old man, I had no clue what was driving him. I thought the plot was absurd, I guess I missed the big metaphor that explains it all.

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 15/01/2023 17:17

It's a metaphor for the Irish Civil War in 1923. I found it very thought provoking and emotional.

Flerken · 15/01/2023 17:37

What does the donkey inexplicably trying to eat severed fingers and then inexplicably choking on them represent in the metaphor?

I'm thinking unknown consequences of actions performed by others. Other people might have better theories

Flerken · 15/01/2023 17:51

But metaphors only work if the simple face of it makes sense, then you can look for the deeper meaning. Do donkeys eat any random shit they have access to? Like goats maybe? It seems unlikely they’d go for severed fingers, and fairly random that doing so would kill them.

Catterbat · 15/01/2023 18:08

I watched this last night and loved it. Yes it’s bleak but it’s also very funny! Just a wonderfully unique, unusual and very clever film. I didn’t find it in the least bit depressing.

It was a senseless death resulting in an even more senseless action. That'd what I took from it anyway.

You weren't alone.
Was it announced that the film was a metaphor for the Irish Civil War ?

The 2 sides in the Irish Civil War had a specific reason for being pro or anti treaty.
They didn't just decide as BG did, that they just didn't like each other anymore and start maiming themselves🙄

If it's a metaphor for the War of Independence, that doesn't work either.
The relationship between Ireland and England was always one of subjugator and subjugated, since the 12th century. It wasn't a friendship.
