Oh my fucking Christ.

Has anyone else seen this? It's both fantastic and fucking horrible.

Absolutely love the director and CF/BG, but Jesus I'm sad now.

You weren't alone.
Was it announced that the film was a metaphor for the Irish Civil War ?

The 2 sides in the Irish Civil War had a specific reason for being pro or anti treaty.
They didn't just decide as BG did, that they just didn't like each other anymore and start maiming themselves🙄

If it's a metaphor for the War of Independence, that doesn't work either.
The relationship between Ireland and England was always one of subjugator and subjugated, since the 12th century. It wasn't a friendship.

Why would it need to be announced?

The civil war is mentioned twice in the movie in passing and that's what it was about. That's more than enough without telling you everything. Show don't tell is what the best stories are built on.

I'd wager that an awful lot of British people don't know much Irish history including the Troubles as it isn't taught at school. That doesn't mean the story should be spelled out in big writing or that the story shouldn't be told the way it was. Thankfully the Golden Globes agree and likely the Oscars will too.

Thought it was really overrated! The whole story didn’t work for me as a premise. Since found out the ignoring/cutting off nose to spite face is meant to represent “the troubles”. I felt sad watching Colin Farrell’s character being tortured for a nonsensical reason. Went to bed half way through. Hi

Me too. I found it boring.

I would say the link to the Irish civil war was fairly heavily hinted at, they showed the specific date on the calendar and mentioned it many times and you saw the fighting in the distance. I just didn’t make the connection to the story.

You're not alone. Watched with dh and the dcs.
They weren't impressed either.
Most viewers of the film wouldn't know of the Irish Civil War.

Delighted that Barry Keoghan and Kerry Condon won best supporting actors at the BAFTAs.
I didn't like the film but they were great.
