Work Dilemma

Hi, I have posted before and I still haven't resolved this issue for myself. I have a job and have been offered another one and I don't know what to do! My indecision is driving me insane. Job I am in, not the manager, bigger area and less known, so a bit of a challenge, so a bit more interesting maybe, job I've been offered, manager, old area I worked in before for another company, so know the patch (property) - is anyone out there to maybe fire some questions at me so I can work out what to do, I keep going round round (after an already odd time work wise since Covid) and don't know what to do for the best..... I seem to have some deep seated issues around it all...

If you're my boss please leave for this new job, you're a pain in the arse and far too moody and if I have to hear your depressing hello when you answer the phone I will cry and I will not ask how you are because you cannot give a straight answer and I cba to listen to you slag off everyone.

if you're not boss - if you don't enjoy the majority of your current job and feel the new one will be better for you then go for it, what do you have to lose?

Haha this made me laugh - I'm not your boss! I have got a bit moody recently but mainly as I'm over anxious about the job - generally though I'm pretty positive.

Sometimes it seems easier to stay where I am, but they were my main competition before, so it always feels a bit like working for the enemy, also as staff, we are in all in competition with each other, which is not the structure I have worked under before, and as I am not the manager I'm finding that quite difficult - managers get an override. Also, I've lost a bit of my confidence/mojo, due to menopause, so worried I won't be as good as I was in the new job. I told myself Id hand my notice in over the break, and I haven't yet!

If it is to work for Foxtons, the answer is no.

Otherwise is it worth the extra money to manage people?

God no, not them, it's hard to work out whether the money would be better, larger basic, and an overide on the amount banked, but the office banks less than where I am now, I mean I might make it bank more, seeing as I worked in the area for a long time so people know me... maybe that's why I'm scared, if I don't then I might feel I've failed....

what do you want out of a career longer term and which job brings you closer to this?

if you don't want a career then which role gives you a better quality of life outside of work?

Carrotandswedemash · 30/12/2022 16:53

if you are this unsure it’s not the job for you but keep looking

I'm already in my 50's, I left this industry before Covid to try something else, kind of wafted around and didn't really settle on anything, so I'm back in this job, albeit different company, I regret leaving my old job to be honest, but hindsight and Covid can make you feel/think all sorts. I guess part of me is feeling the need to prove myself again.....

No, I think working locally at either of these is the right thing, long term I need to do more creative stuff on the side and some courses to try and develop another passion interest....

Write down what you really want to do in positive statements.
I want to……. Xyz to enable me to ……vhg……. Etc.
get your goal specific and clear.

LizzieMacQueen · 30/12/2022 19:33

Tell yourself you are going to toss a coin to decide. When it lands you'll know - either you'll say, yep, right answer, or you'll say, best of 3 - which also gives you your answer.

I did this a few week ago, and it said to stay and I wasn't sure that's what I wanted. Thing is, as soon as I think I know I switch again, it really is exhausting :o( and it means I always think I'm making the wrong decision.

Maybe I need more coffee i haven't seen what the comparative salaries are.

If the new job pays 10% more then you must go for it.

CleoandRalf · 31/12/2022 16:03

Have you tried a classic pro con list?

As a lots of it is commission based it's hard to tell, the basic is about 4,500 more in the other job.

Yes, I think there is more going in, as the new job is back in the area I was before, in many way, that's good, I know people, the values etc. but sometimes it feels. Bit like going back, I think that's my biggest issue, and the fear of failure. I prefer the new company as in the owners, but it's not like I'm going to be sitting with them anyway. I think cos I left my previous job a few years ago, I have ultimately demoted myself generally in the industry and I struggle with that.

Which one gives you the better work life balance

i had to make this decision earlier this year, I did a pros and cons list and chose the one that suited my vision for the future and which one was less stressful.

I think that's were I struggle, I'm not sure what my vision for the future looks like. in my old managers job that I left pre Covid, I left as I wanted a change and felt hemmed in by the patch I worked in, so I'm back in the industry I left, which is fine but a bit weird as I'd hoped for a different direction, the new offer is in that patch so whilst that's good in many ways it's also feel like going back. And the new job isn't either of the main contenders there, and before I worked at one of the better ones. A lot of this is more deep rooted in how I feel about myself, shouldn't have left my old job, and have been a bit lost for the last few years.. I'm messing people about tho' saying I'll come work for them and then getting all panicky about it. I need to make a decision and stick with it.

How does that work out percentage-wise? I think the 10% thing is a good heuristic.

Tabasco007 · 01/01/2023 22:26

@Coffeetree if you are a manager you get a % of overall commission, (you do have to make sure you get the stick in to sell) in my current role, I am considered 2nd in command so to speak, so there is an office over ride (not as much) and you get commission if you sell. The current manager there won't be leaving.... they are a bigger company, so more structures to promote people, but part of me just want to do the next 5-work years and settle as the last few have been quite unsettled...

Allsnotwell · 01/01/2023 22:35

I’m also 50’s going back to an old industry - at the bottom - but I have a plan that I want to gain promotion and fully intend to prove myself and get a leg up -

I feel empowered to do this because of the companies culture.

I also worry about failing but this isn’t an option!

so get your thoughts together and work out what you want to achieve - change culture, gain more sales, branch out to new areas, make contacts in the area etc look at how social media is used and photos - are you reaching the young adults - what can you offer there?
