Flu jab - do you have it even if no medical reason

Do you have the flu jab even if you have no medical reason to do so? I’m wondering whether to get it. I had flu once when I was in my 20’s but that’s it.

I am late 40’s, have no medical reason to get it, and only had it once when I was pregnant. I had an alert from the Boots App and they have reduced the price down to £9.95 so I wonder if they or the government are trying to encourage more people to have it.

I am in my 30's but get it free through work so always get it . Worth it to not get really ill i think.

ChristmasTidyings · 30/12/2022 12:23

Yes, always. I wouldn't be able to look after the DC if I had flu!

HimiJendrix · 30/12/2022 12:24

Yes I get it done, have done for the last three years.

Yes. I have it every year and haven’t had a winter dose of bronchitis since I started having it .

Same, we don't have family nearby so we both have flu jabs. I'll do it until they're old enough to be able to get their own food and put the TV on.

Forever42 · 30/12/2022 12:26

Yes, I'm a primary teacher so potentially exposed to the flu virus quite a lot. I also just prefer not to get the flu as it would be unpleasant and inconvenient.

Snap. I get it every year, whether paying myself, a voucher from work, or on the NHS when I've been pregnant. Every year. Previously because I just didn't want to get that ill, but now more importantly because I couldn't look after my kids if I had the flu.

Oohahhalittlebitmore · 30/12/2022 12:26

Flu cases are rising and there are increased numbers of people with flu in hospitals atm.
It is definitely worth getting it.

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 30/12/2022 12:27

£9.95 is a good discount from Boots - they were charging £16.95 in the autumn. Supermarkets were much cheaper, around £10-£11, which is where I got mine. I always get one - bottom line is, like anyone else, I don't want a bad dose of flu!

America12 · 30/12/2022 12:27

Yes. I'm NHS , I had flu once , it knocked me out for 3 weeks.

Yes, have done for a couple of years now. I'm self employed so don't get paid for time off sick. I've had flu twice (one was during the swine flu pandemic!) and it's awful so want to do everything to avoid it.
I'm in my late 30s.

Abraxan · 30/12/2022 12:32

Dh has it every year as does 20y Dd.
We've paid in the past for them but they now get it free due to living with me - classed as vulnerable.

MilkItTilITurnItIntoCheese · 30/12/2022 12:32

Yes I get it every year. I have to pay. I got flu 10 years ago and it floored me for ages. Over the festive period I’ve had a husband and 2 children with flu. I haven’t had it.

Ivyonafence · 30/12/2022 12:33

My medical reason is I don't want the fucking flu.

Abra1t · 30/12/2022 12:33

I used to pay for it before I was eligible for the NHS one.

I had serious flu twice in my lifetime. The second bout in my forties permanently changed the way my face looked because I lost a lot of weight very quickly through not eating because of being so unwell and burning off a lot of calories fighting temperatures of 40 degrees. It left my face very gaunt. Perhaps that sounds vain, but I found it upsetting.

LucyFox · 30/12/2022 12:34

Yes, I had flu about 15 yrs ago & I don’t want to repeat it if there’s a way to avoid (flu is not a bad cold, it’s awful…)

fancyacuppatea · 30/12/2022 12:36

I've paid for one for the last 15ish yrs. DH got free ones (heart probs) and so did my parents.
I've had flu at Christmas once - it was awful - I was ill until February. It's worth the money to reduce the chance of getting it again.
I'm over 50 now, so don't have to pay, but I would if I had to.

WhoopItUp · 30/12/2022 12:36

I had it in September. I’ve also just had Flu A (diagnosed via a swab test) and I felt incredibly unwell for 4 weeks. I’m so grateful I had it because God knows what it would have gene like otherwise. I have no underlying health conditions.

EmmaAgain22 · 30/12/2022 12:38

I usually do because when I had it, I was dreadfully ill and longer term, very weak. So I've probably had it annually since I was 22.

as a freelancer, three weeks off work unpaid is quite full on.

AnnaMagnani · 30/12/2022 12:39

I do now have a medical reason but I had it every year before that anyway.

Because flu is awful.

I can still remember how ill I was and it was 20 years ago.

lunar1 · 30/12/2022 12:39

Yes, ds2 is asthmatic so us all being vaccinated will help protect him. I was also hospitalised with swine flu years ago and definitely don't want to repeat that experience!

FuckabethFuckor · 30/12/2022 12:40

I do. I’m self-employed, and if I don’t work I don’t earn, so a flu jab reduces my chances of having to have unpaid time off sick. I’ve had flu twice in my life and both times it was utterly horrible. I generally pay about £15/20 so for under a tenner I’d bite their hand off!

AuntieMarys · 30/12/2022 12:42

I'm in my 60s, fit as a fiddle and I have it

UsingChangeofName · 30/12/2022 12:46

I never did pre-covid, but that has changed the whole situation.
We had 2 years of people not going out, not mixing, not getting all the usual illnesses over Winter and I felt that left us all more vulnerable, so I had it both last year and this.
