Flu jab - do you have it even if no medical reason

Do you have the flu jab even if you have no medical reason to do so? I’m wondering whether to get it. I had flu once when I was in my 20’s but that’s it.

I am late 40’s, have no medical reason to get it, and only had it once when I was pregnant. I had an alert from the Boots App and they have reduced the price down to £9.95 so I wonder if they or the government are trying to encourage more people to have it.

Yes. I used to get a voucher for a free jab from work and then was eligible when the Government brought in free jabs for the over-50's during the pandemic. Now I'm 60 I'll be eligible for a free one anyway but even if I wasn't I'd pay for one.

Figgypudding123 · 30/12/2022 16:49

Yes - real flu is an absolutely awful, debilitating illness. The jab is a tiny thing that doesn't cost much and is over in a second. Total no-brainer IMO...

VanillaImpulse · 30/12/2022 16:49

The only reason Boots have lowered the price is because they have loads of stock to shift and by lowering the price they'll be more likely to get rid of them. In a few months all they can do is bin them as they can only be used for 22/23 season. Don't think it's because they are trying to be nice! They will still make a hefty profit charging £9.95.

Yes, always. I wouldn't be able to look after the DC if I had flu!

This was my thinking years ago when Infirst started getting it.

WearingPierreCadault · 30/12/2022 16:51

I used to get it every year, the only reason I haven't the last couple is nowhere locally I can. But I got it previously because I just didn't want the flu/as bad a flu, no other medical reasons.

StuckInTheUpsideDown · 30/12/2022 16:53

Yes I do. I am normally working for employers who will pay but when I’m not the private cost is (to me) small to reduce the risks of getting flu, missing work, being unable to care for children etc.

Rainsdropskeepfalling · 30/12/2022 16:57

Yes every year - medical reason is I don't want flu.

Given that the flu shot is a best guess on what strain(s) will be circulating this year, I've always thought it makes sense to get it every year to improve my chances of having some immunity to whatever is circulating this year.

TheFairyCaravan · 30/12/2022 17:04

Yes, I do.

DS1 has just had the flu (confirmed). He’s a fit as a fiddle soldier. We had to go to get him from his barracks because he was so unwell that he couldn’t fend for himself. In the midst of being unwell he said he was having a jab in future because he’s not going through it again.

Mercy1968 · 30/12/2022 17:50

No never had the flu jab and I m 55 next month.
I m not having anymore covid jabs either (made me more ill than when I actually had covid).
I last had flu in 2018 during beast from the east. Was really ill but nothing being in bed at home didn't cure.
I work in a secondary school and don't tend to catch many illnesses but they pay sick pay if you re off.

You've given a random, Captain Obvious reply rather than answer the question?

Ok.

Oops forgot to answer your rhetorical question.

Yep

There ya go hun.

DarkKarmaIlama · 30/12/2022 19:50

@ofwarren

I didn’t do it for work I just ordered online as I was curious and it was only a couple of quid. I had been testing negative for covid for days and knew I had something much worse than a cold. My 12 year old is not due his nasal spray until late Jan at school and he was in bed for days with a fever. I had never seen him so poorly. My two younger children had the nasal
spray at school a few months ago and they were absolutely fine thankfully.

RidingMyBike · 30/12/2022 20:20

Yes, always. I pay for it, apart from the year I was pregnant. My work now pays for anyone who wants one to have one.

I've had flu twice years ago and it was utterly miserable, so not keen to have it again!

XenoBitch · 30/12/2022 20:38

No. I had it just the once (was through work) and it made me feel awful afterwards. I ended up off sick.
Not had it since.

frozendaisy · 30/12/2022 20:49

Yes pay full price every year early on.

Covidwoes · 30/12/2022 20:55

I've only had it when pregnant, but bizarrely I've never had flu (I'm in my late thirties). I wonder if I'm one of those people who is immune. I've had covid twice though, so clearly not immune to that!
