Fat and ugly. Gastric band

Vanishbanish · 28/12/2022 20:24

I'm really ugly and over weight. Because I hate myself I don't really make any effort with my apprence.

But I am trying to change things. I have had all my bottom teeth removed and having my teeth replaced. The next step is to get my top teeth removed. So with that side of things I'm going in the right direction.

I'm very over weight my BMI is 32. But I really wanted to have a gastric band. But im not over weight enough to have a band. The only other option is the balloon but that just seens pointless.

I'm not diabetic or anything like that so I can't have it on medical grounds. I'm not in a position to be able to go abroad

If I'm paying for it I feel like I should be able to get it done . But it seems that's not thr case

I'm not trying to be down on you op, but have you already tried less invasive methods of weight loss?

Feckthehallsagain · 28/12/2022 20:29

I had bmi of 33 and self funded a band in 2011. Life changing.

isthewashingdryyet · 28/12/2022 20:30

Try one pic, saxenda. Much kinder and safer.

BMI of 32 is not grossly overweight, have you tried the orlistat?

AnnaMagnani · 28/12/2022 20:37

Have a look at the Ozempic and Saxenda threads on the Weight Loss Forum.

I've gone down from a BMI of 33 to 25.

Gastric bands aren't regularly used by the NHS anymore for a reason. They're not effective long term, they fail. They're dangerous.

You can get weightloss surgery abroad with a lower bmi but it's a lot of risk for little reward of you aren't very overweight.

For many years adjustable gastric banding has been the most frequently performed weight loss surgery in Australia. Unfortunately, there are large number of reports on gastric band failure and long term complication rate. Long term studies report a 40-66% failure rate (not losing enough weight), removal rate of 30%, and 25% rate of reoperation due to complications after 10 years. With over half a million gastric band placed worldwide, the problem with band complications is very big.

I would pay for it privately. So not on nhs . Why is it nor effective long term?

My point is that the NHS don't see it cost effective. So you'd be throwing your money away. Research the long term results.

Not to mention, many people find the food gets stuck and they end up vomiting regularly which would screw your new teeth.

Download MyFitnessPal, track your calories. Buy some new gym gear and get exercising! Go to the hairdresser and get a good haircut. Do things that will make you feel good, even if they seem difficult to start with 😀

I wish it was that simple

Unless you get to the bottom of why you are overweight and feeling the way you feel, any method will fail including expensive and risky surgery. Have you considered hypnotherapy? It may help you deal with more than just your weight and help you learn to love yourself and therefore take care of yourself.

I just had a quick look. But I will look properly when it's quite at my end. I'm wondering if it's available in tablet form. I really don't want to do infections.

You say you wish it was that simple, but do you think having intense surgery will be simple? Will that fix how you feel about yourself?

HermioneWeasley · 28/12/2022 21:10

Check out the “I started Ozempic last night” thread in weight loss chat

Redruby2020 · 28/12/2022 21:13

Gosh this might sound odd but i would love to be that BMI again! That was what i was when i had lost quite a bit of weight and that was a big improvement.

Yes i would say similar as a few others have said, try other options before looking at a band.

Pinkbonbon · 28/12/2022 21:13

If I were you I would join a slimming world group or weight watchers one. It helps to lose weight woth other ppl doing the same and gave a weekly weigh in.

At my worst I was a stone over my recommended bmi and I lost 2-4lbs ever week (with no exercise apart from an occasional leisurely stroll). I think if you're a bit bigger more weight might come off too.

I'd try it for 6 months rather than getting surgery.

Redruby2020 · 28/12/2022 21:14

@AnnaMagnani Wow! Sounds great, which one have you been on?

Pinkbonbon · 28/12/2022 21:16

Ps: Good luck on your journey!

I think it would give me a big boost and push on the physical side of it and the mental health side of it as well. I think a boost of that type would help.

Going to the hair dressers and seeing my ugly face in the mirror will not help at all ot will make me feel worse. When I have had my hair done in the past. I just feel really Ugley I last went to the hair dressers about 9 years ago .

Very very gently OP, weight loss and your looks are separate things. What do you think will change about your face with weight loss? Sure your face would be slimmer but may not make you feel any better about the way you look. That is the issue.
