Having two different single duvets when sharing a double bed

lummox · 28/12/2022 10:39

Perimenopause and general difference in body thermostat is making it very hard for DH and I to agree on a duvet. Has anyone succeeded in being comfortable with two single duvets when sharing a bed?

Would two ordinary singles work on a king-size bed or do they keep falling off the sides in the night?!

Also here for any luxury duvet suggestions...

I'd go with individual doubles as you can't wrap a single round you properly and likely would seem a bit small on a king, also more likely to end up on floor

LunaLoveFood · 28/12/2022 10:43

We've just bought a half and half duvet. Half is 7.5tog the other half is 4.5 tog which is perfect for us.

lummox · 28/12/2022 10:51

I was wondering about whether we needed two doubles, but that seems a lot of duvet! And I don't really want to wrap it round me as I get too hot. Maybe a double and a single is the answer?

We did try one of the half and half ones but it wasn't a very nice duvet. I think it would be nicer to have a posh single/double one as there isn't a massive choice with the half and half ones.

We have a king duvet (summer and winter ones) on a double bed, and DH who runs colder also has a weighted blanket which weighs a ton so doesn’t slide off. if it’s chilly with the summer duvet, I might add a woolen blanket on my side.

Comedycook · 28/12/2022 10:56

I think two singles would be too narrow on a king size bed and when you turn over in the night would not necessarily cover you without having to shift it around. I think two doubles would be better

DashingWhiteSergeant · 28/12/2022 10:58

We have two doubles or our king size, works a treat for us.

SirVixofVixHall · 28/12/2022 10:59

Two singles side by side are wider than a King size duvet, two doubles would be huge.
In Sweden it is common to have two single duvets and I found it comfortable last time we were there.

lummox · 28/12/2022 10:59

DH using a blanket would be my preferred solution, but I feel a bit bad because when we have a heavy duvet in a hotel or something he seems to like it so much. I have read about weighted blankets but not tried one. If that would give him the same sense of cosiness as a big duvet it may be the answer. Sounds claustrophobic to me, but this is such an individual thing!

Ah - I missed these replies whilst typing. Interesting spread of views on whether 2 singles is enough. I think they would in theory be wider than the bed, but once you add people and moving around into the mix it may be that isn't enough. Not sure if you can get 1.5 size? I would rather have something standard though for getting covers.

We've got two singles on a Superking bed and they're plenty big enough, when I make the bed they look nice and neat too, I imagine two doubles would either have to overlap in the middle causing a big lump or overhang the sides by a long way.

It's also easier to find nice bedding as sometimes the covers aren't available in Superking but they're always available in single.

Regarding the menopause if you're having symptoms that are affecting your daily life then it's worth thinking about hrt, I put up with awful night sweats for over 2 years which made me miserable at night and knackered throughout the day because of lack of sleep, I finally went on hrt 6 weeks ago and the sweats stopped within a week, it's been life changing.

QuietYou · 28/12/2022 11:12

I don't like separate duvets because there's either too much duvet or a gap.

I just stick bits of me out of the duvet if I get too hot.

I have this. Its awesome.

We sleep with 2 single quilts on a king size bed and it works a treat!

WithIcePlease · 28/12/2022 11:20

I need a 4.5 even in the cold weather. DH loved 10.5 but I couldn't sleep it was dreadful - used it for 5 nights
So now on KS bed we have a superking 4.5 and DH has a 4.5 single on top of him too which looks fine widthways across bottom of bed in the day with satiny comforter thing on top
I'd have got a dual tog one but couldn't see one for superking

ImBlueDab · 28/12/2022 12:46

We do this, my dh is always really hot so has a v thin duvet, I'm hot, then cold, then hot, then cold again and constantly tossing the duvet on and off again. It meant my dh ended up with double the duvet on, or none at all. Since we've gone for 2 singles on a king size bed, it's soooooo much better. Plus I can now put both legs out the duvet and not bother him, whilst keeping my upper body covered Grin

astralpiano · 28/12/2022 12:48

Yes try a single if you run hot and a double if you prefer to wrap yourself in it

Remainiac · 28/12/2022 12:51

We have two singles on a king bed. Game-changer! I recommend it to all my menopausal mates and without fail they report back positively. You don’t need doubles. We have summer weight and winter weight down duvets and choose which we want when we change the bedding each week. At the moment we’re both in winter ones.

Elodie09 · 28/12/2022 12:54

@Remainiac With you all the way! We did this after a trip to Copenhagen, gamechanger.

lummox · 28/12/2022 12:55

Right - definitely going to try two singles! Thank you all. Am slightly pathetically excited at the idea of being able to choose exactly the duvet that I would most like.

Do those of you with two different duvets just buy two identical duvet covers?

We use 2 singles on a super king and they are perfect size. Solves all the problems of being different temperatures and stops you being disturbed when the other person moves in the night. Transformed our sleep, can't believe more people don't do it. It's the norm in many European countries.

mawbroon · 28/12/2022 12:56

We have two singles on a super king bed. Works really well for us.

We also have two single mattresses (and sheets) which minimises the trampoline effect when DH tosses and turns in the night.

It means that all the bedding is single size and there's no wrestling with huge duvets and covers, plus we can have different mattresses to suit ourselves.

Best thing ever!

umberellaonesie · 28/12/2022 12:56

We have 2 singles on a super king. I would never go back to sharing a duvet.
I have a wool all season duvet and DH has a light weight microfibre.

DontSpeakLatinInFrontOfTheBooks · 28/12/2022 13:15

We have a king sized duvet each. A double each would also work but in for a penny and all that.

IDontDrinkTea · 28/12/2022 13:23

We have two singles on a super king. I’ve bought Coverless duvets because I hate hate hate changing duvet covers. It’s the best thing I ever did I think

VitaminX · 28/12/2022 13:34

We have two singles and it's great. I was fed up of being whooshed with air when he turned over in the night. He has a heavier warmer duvet than me too and I can just think about what suits me.

I can easily wrap myself up in a single duvet if I want to. I can also stick my feet out on both sides if I want to. Ours are 150x200 cm from IKEA. One person doesn't need wider than that!
