Should I correct my boss?

elsa758 · 27/12/2022 16:01

My team emails each other a lot in our line of work and my boss makes spelling or grammar mistakes that annoy me whenever I see them. I know it is my OCD trait but it does make me go ick whenever this happens.

Examples are:
CoVid
Thru instead of through
Pls let me know if questions

Should I mention this to him privately?

What would you be hoping to achieve by mentioning it? It sounds like it's his style rather than him making mistakes, your reaction to it is on you.

TinyChancer · 27/12/2022 16:48

My manager has dyslexia. Sometimes I correct him, but only when the error can change the meaning to a client reading something he's written. I do worry about embarrassing him when I do it, as it is not his fault.

astralpiano · 27/12/2022 16:58

No just make sure yours are 100% correct and proper grammar if it bugs you

roseretrox · 27/12/2022 17:05

I believe pointing it out will do you more harm than good. Your examples aren’t even that bad so could come across as nitpicking. Your boss is just shortening words.

It’s bizarre, I work in public sector and am degree educated and know how to format an email formally. But my colleagues are awful at this, it’s not really spelling mistakes that are the issue - they send Facebook marketplace ranting kind of emails. Ie emails that don’t make sense at all and saying things that have no place in a corporate, government sector workplace. Or trying to write puns but getting the joke the wrong way around. Literally messages that you expect them to send in their personal life.

dcut · 27/12/2022 17:07

He's clearly just using abbreviations.
You might find it irritating but it isn't incorrect in this context.
I have no idea why you think correcting him would be appropriate.

roseretrox · 27/12/2022 17:08

I’m not going to pull them up on it though. I’m sure there’s plenty of occasions where I’ve spelt something wrong. Sometimes it’s quantity over quality when you work in an understaffed, underfunded company that deals with the public and as long as the spelling mistake is minor, it’s not going to cause any issues.

Oblomov22 · 27/12/2022 17:10

The fact that this even occurred to you, for one nano second, that it would be ok to correct, is worrying.

Adviceneeded200 · 27/12/2022 17:14

No.

For two reasons...

One these seem OK to me - office messages and emails often use short cuts for speed and informality - it's fine for the audience.

Also

At work you have to be aware of the equality act and not treating people differently with certain conditions. Dyslexia is one. This warning isn't about your question (as that spelling isnt particularly dyslexic looking) but it is to warn you to.understand how you will have to learn to accept things that trigger your OCD so as not to breach any work rules.

Just ask yourself do you understand what you need to do. If yes, just do it and move on.

Worth privately speaking to him, as he could be hiding the beginning of deteriorating eyesight. Hopefully not.

What an odd suggestion. He's clearly using well-known abbreviations.

ouch321 · 27/12/2022 17:20

I think you should definitely bring his errors to his attention.

Then come back and tell us about his response.

Blip · 27/12/2022 17:25

It's not going to go down well if you tell your boss to make these changes, to put it bluntly he will just think you are a dick and are trying to put him down.

When he writes pls he is of course 100% aware that this is short for please, so why would it be in any way helpful for you to tell him this?

Forestfire12345 · 27/12/2022 17:25

As above.😁

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 27/12/2022 17:27

Sure, go ahead if you really want to piss your boss off... are you nuts?

Of course your don't 'correct' your boss for things that aren't actually incorrect, just abbreviated.

Tiltedandwilted · 27/12/2022 17:28

Of course not, if you want to keep your job that is.

Why would a grown human even consider this? It’s rude regardless, let alone to do to your boss

Charliehaus · 27/12/2022 17:31

Don’t try to be a know it all especially with your boss.
This is how you get a bad rep at work. People will not want to work with you.

RambamThankyouMam · 27/12/2022 17:32

You'll come across as a right dick if you correct him.

Notanotherone6 · 27/12/2022 17:40

It irritates me when people write names without capital letters, but I'd never tell them that directly.

Stripedbag101 · 27/12/2022 17:42

You sound like you are picking on very small things to try and undermine him and make yourself feel superior.

he is using abbreviations/short hand.

i manage a large team and if someone spoke to me about this I would find it highly amusing. I would also assume they were a bit immature and would be concerned about their judgement.

TokyoSushi · 27/12/2022 17:46

Irritating? Yes. Mention it? Absolutely not!

anythinginapinch · 27/12/2022 17:48

No. Do not correct your boss. Ffs

MajorCarolDanvers · 27/12/2022 17:58

What do you imagine the outcome would be?

Rosebud21 · 27/12/2022 18:00

Hugasauras · 27/12/2022 16:30

Do you have OCD? Or are you using it as a way of saying you are anal about something? If the latter, please stop using it that way. OCD is a very upsetting and serious condition for many people. Being irritated by someone writing 'pls' is not it.

Thank you for saying this 🙂

maddiemookins16mum · 27/12/2022 18:12

Dont be reduculus.

shinynewapple22 · 27/12/2022 18:55

Perhaps you could raise it in a team meeting ? And offer to help any other team members who are tempted to use abbreviations in internal communications ? You never know - this may be giving your colleagues the 'ick' too.

2bazookas · 27/12/2022 19:00

Any literate person should recognise that thru and pls are deliberate abbreviations, not mistakes.
