inspired by another thread ..

have you owned a good natured dog from a young puppy, let it sleep on the end of your bed and been bitten during the night?

it didn’t occur to me that this was potentially dangerous ..

What?

SirChenjins · 26/12/2022 21:11

What happened on the other thread?

Hopeyoursproutsarealreadyon · 26/12/2022 21:12

Our first dpuppy slept on ds's bed. Bit his foot in the night. Still has a small scar..
As a dc my ddog slept on my bed her entire life. Never raised an eyebrow at me.
Depends on the ddog and circumstances ime.

DolphinWars · 26/12/2022 21:15

I’ve always had my dogs sleep on my bed, good natured and not so good natured, never been bitten.

There’s a FB dog training group run by qualified behaviourists, and iirc they advise that cosleeping with dogs is fine and helps to build the bond.

Our dog has slept on the bed with us since we got him at 12 weeks.

He'll be five in February and we've never had an issue. He makes an excellent hot water bottle Grin

Chesneyhawkes1 · 26/12/2022 21:17

I've had many different dog breeds sleep on my bed with me. Never been bitten.

My grumpy old terrier years ago would growl if I moved and kicked him in the night 🤦‍♀️ but never bite.

blackheartsgirl · 26/12/2022 21:19

I remember reading a horrific story once about a small dog (maybe a jack russell) that slept on its owners bed and one night viciously attacked the owners face and pretty much ripped it off.

my dogs have always slept on my bed but I suppose anything is risky if you think too hard about it

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 26/12/2022 21:21

My 10 year old collie has had the run of the house since about 5 months old. He has recently taken to sleeping on 11 yo DS bed.

TrentCrimm · 26/12/2022 21:29

Our 7 year old spanner has slept in (or under) our bed since 8 weeks old, without any more issue than taking up too much space.

Although having read this, I'm now looking at her sideways, with an element of suspicion...

Hoppinggreen · 26/12/2022 21:31

MIL was bitten on the hand very badly when she turned over in bed and her hand landed on her terrier.

ScrabbleRabbler · 26/12/2022 21:49

Interesting! So mostly ok, occasionally not.

My 2 sleep on the bed. 4 years in and I am still in one piece.

Redpriestandmozart · 26/12/2022 22:01

I have owned a few breeds but own a greyhound now and they can have sleep startle, which to date she hasn't demonstrated but our last one did. Knowing this I wouldn't let a greyhound sleep on the bed but I have done with my smaller breeds.

LauraA31 · 26/12/2022 22:06

I never even thought sleeping with the dog on the bed could be an issue!

We have a rescue shih-tzu who has slept on our bed since day one, she hates sleeping alone in her own bed. Never had any issues apart from sometimes she snores a bit loud, and on a morning when she is ready to get up she does very dramatic yawns so we know she is awake 😂

If I wake in the night or turn over i always stroke her and she has never grumbled, it’s almost like she likes the reassurance we are still there..

MistyIsland · 26/12/2022 22:08

My old dog used to sleep on the floor in our room, and when DH got up ended up in bed with me I was never bitten..he slept like that from being a 12 week old puppy to when he was sadly out to sleep, our other dog never slept on the bed I guess she didn’t want to

I’m not sure I’d allow dogs in the kids rooms, as much I don’t believe my dogs would bite I just wouldn’t want to risk it with mine.

Dogs stay downstairs now since we moved (room is too small for dogs) they seem happy to

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 26/12/2022 22:14

My dog is sleeping on my bed right now. He would be very upset at facing to sleep anywhere else.

He's never shown any aggression to me.

MissDollyMix · 26/12/2022 22:21

I always had a dog on my bed as a child. As an adult I can only take my dog to bed with me when DH is working away as he doesn’t like dogs in the bed. She does however sometimes share a bed with my 9yo. No one has had their face ripped off yet…

Logicalreasoning · 26/12/2022 22:26

We’ve had 3 dogs all from puppy’s and non have attacked us at night... or ever. One of them was a Doberman... I do lady and the tramp with my dog and she’s never ripped my face off so... who knows

Atethehalloweenchocs · 26/12/2022 22:29

I have a jack Russell cross who slept on the bed with me always but got to the stage where she would growl at me if I rolled over in the night. So she was banished from the bedroom for a while. Now she knows if I get up or move she has to get off and wait until I settle myself before she is allowed back on. I think with terrier mixes they are often looking to challenge the boundaries and you have to be careful. She has never bitten me though.

RudeElfTheRainDear · 26/12/2022 22:29

The biggest risk of sleeping with the my dog is the risk of a cold arse as he hogs the covers. Or the risk of fatigue when the snoring wakes me up. Grin

haha

jtaeapa · 26/12/2022 22:34

No. I'd can't imagine him biting me in the night, unless he was terrified?

Justlovedogs · 26/12/2022 22:37

I've had one rescue and 5 puppies in 30 years, all GSDs, all slept on the bed and never had this or even heard of it. I'm more likely to get cold feet where they steel the covers!

ladygindiva · 26/12/2022 22:40

No. I have a rescue who sleeps on the end of bed, has done for 10 years. Never happened.
