inspired by another thread ..

have you owned a good natured dog from a young puppy, let it sleep on the end of your bed and been bitten during the night?

it didn’t occur to me that this was potentially dangerous ..

DH won’t let our Labrador sleep on our bed 😭 but I’d me more concerned about being licked to death than bitten. He hasn’t got an aggressive bone in his body.

vodkaredbullgirl · 26/12/2022 22:45

Both my lab's sleep on my bed, they have 3/4 and I have the edge of the bed. When I try to move them they both go like a dead weight and will not shift over.

PauliString · 26/12/2022 22:52

The dog has never so much as grumbled if allowed to sleep with us. The cat on the other hand is a bastard.

Branster · 26/12/2022 23:17

Had one or two dogs sleeping on my bed since forever and never once any of the dogs but me or anyone else in the house in the same or other bed.
Mostly raised from puppies and some rescues. It never occurred to me this would ever be an issue.
However, all the dogs had great temperament so that probably helped. Current dogs doing the same, no issues.

I imagine if you are a restless sleeper and inadvertently kick the dog when it's asleep it's natural reaction is to bite. Mostly a dog would cower if mistreated but I could see this happening - it's certainly within the realms of possibility.
But my two have slept in my bed since they were about two with no problems.

have you owned a good natured dog from a young puppy,

Yes, 12+ from childhood to our current gang of 6.

let it sleep on the end of your bed

Yes, pretty much all of them from childhood to now, and mostly they haven't/don't stay at the end of the bed 😄

and been bitten during the night?

Never. Never been bitten by any of my own dogs after they're out of the velociraptor puppy teething stage.

Babyroobs · 26/12/2022 23:56

My dogs sleep in our bed. Younger dog sometimes gives dh a growl if he's gently moved to allow dh to get in !!

allboysherebutme · 26/12/2022 23:59

Never, sometimes I do wake up to find my little dog, nibbling on the cuff of my pyjama bottoms x

XenoBitch · 26/12/2022 23:59

Have had my dog from a pup, and she sleeps in/on my bed. Never had any issues, but 'sleep startle' is a thing with dogs. Sadly knew someone who was ordered to have their dog PTS when it bit a child who sat on it when it was asleep.

CaptainBarbosa · 27/12/2022 00:02

YI have a dog from a puppy that slept on/in my bed.

The only issue I have now is he's 50+kg and still thinks he's a tiny pup, so he crushes me when he tries to sleep with me 🤣

I won't lie and will admit, I have spooned my dog 🤣

He has never ever nipped, bitten or attacked me in my sleep. Pushed me out of bed yes...😳

Adarajames · 27/12/2022 00:15

My younger one has snapped at me / the other dogs when startled from sleep. He was a rescue and had to fight the bigger dogs for food / bed space etc, so waking him suddenly makes him jump and snap, although he’s very apologetic (as much as a dog can be) afterwards

TranquilBlue · 27/12/2022 00:51

Sleep startle is a thing so, potentially, some dogs, could bite as a reaction, but you are most likely aware if your dog has it and I don’t know of anyone it’s happened to personally. Another thing to consider, especially as they age, is that pain can be a factor if you are a restless sleeper and they get jostled, so I would think some nocturnal snaps could be down to pain reactions.

I’ve had dogs for over 30 years, but none have slept on my bed overnight. Various dogs have slept in my room and been invited up onto my bed in the morning though. Current dog (still a pup/youngster) sleeps alongside me in an open fabric crate and asks, ever so sweetly, if he can come up for a cuddle in the morning. He’s generally on my bed while I get ready for bed as well, but then chooses to go in his crate rather than stay where he is and be disturbed all night. (I have restless legs syndrome and suffer with joint pain so change position a lot in the night.)

I have however been pushed out of a bed by a certain GSD who came up for her early morning cuddle/snooze and decided the whole bed would be much more acceptable than just her fair share. Hmm Grin

Thingiemajig · 27/12/2022 03:41

some great stories about four legged bed hoggers

3ormoredogs · 27/12/2022 06:26

I haven’t but my old dog (13) has been lovely all of his life, good with children and was a registered pets as therapy in his day. He used to go into schools when I did talks with children to educate them about dog safety he was that rock steady.

He developed arthritis and now will growl if he’s bothered while he’s on his bed. I don’t think he can see or hear very well due to his age and it’s painful for him to get up quickly. Previously I would have said he would never of growled at a soul until one day he did. I don’t penalise him for being a grumpy old dog but we all know to leave him alone while he sleeps.

So I can see how it could happen. Dog is sore or unwell or stressed and there you go! It’s a dog after all.

Inapicklee · 27/12/2022 06:41

I frequently get attacked by my cat if she sleeps on the bed and I accidentally brush against her.

Never the dog. She doesn’t normally stay on the bed unless DP is away, in which case she loves being little spoon. I can’t imagine her growling let alone biting - she doesn’t have an aggressive bone in her body.

KangarooKenny · 27/12/2022 07:15

If mine bit me I’d assume I’d hurt him accidentally, or he’d started with doggy dementia.
But I’m assuming the original problem was that the dog had stared resource guarding the bed ?
