Which cheeses are safe after sell by date

We've been given a cheese selection box today, sell by date expires tomorrow. It includes cheddar, red leicester, brie, stilton, edam and a smoked cheese. I'm the only serious cheese eater in the house and have already bought a couple of treat cheeses for myself to eat, so fear they'll be wasted.

They’ll all be fine for ages.

CaramelizedNuts · 26/12/2022 17:01

All of them in my opinion!

At least a week or two will be fine

skippingthroughthedaisies · 26/12/2022 17:01

All of them.
I wouldn’t be concerned about sell by dates on cheese at all.

Yup, all of them. Enjoy

greenacrylicpaint · 26/12/2022 17:01

block cheese will be fine for months if stored sensibly.
it can also be frozen.

MerryChristmasTree · 26/12/2022 17:02

All of them, it’s cheese. I throw it when it goes mouldy.

Crazykefir · 26/12/2022 17:02

Yes theyll be fine. However they freeze well aparantly. Id be tempted of eat the brie and freeze the hard cheese.

Lcb123 · 26/12/2022 17:03

i think dates are irrelevant on cheese - but if you’re bothered then freeze them.

If it's hard cheese I just cut the mould off and it's fine.

BuffaloCauliflower · 26/12/2022 17:04

They’ll last ages. I’ve never looked at the date on cheese in my life.

DelilahBucket · 26/12/2022 17:05

Don't think I've ever looked at a date on cheese. If it's mouldy then it's off, apart from blue obviously Grin. Even then, if it's a little bit of mould I have been known to cut it off and carry on.

AnnaMagnani · 26/12/2022 17:05

All of them. I might be inclined to freeze some of the hard cheeses if you are the only person eating them.

Brie in particular is at it's best a long way after the best before date, when it is able to walk on to your plate by itself.

Bemyclementine · 26/12/2022 17:05

Ages. But you can freeze most too.

MissConductUS · 26/12/2022 17:05

Is it a sell by or a best by date? Sell by dates allow additional time for consumption.

Canninefriend · 26/12/2022 17:07

Exactly this, and perfectly safe to eat,
even blue cheese which has mould injected into it is a fine example

upinaballoon · 26/12/2022 17:12

Mould is ok. One of my relations lived to be 100 because she regularly ate pork pie with mould on it --- penicillin, another relation maintained.

PotteringAlonggotkickedoutandhadtoreregister · 26/12/2022 17:15

All cheese is fine for ever. Shave off the mould and carry on.

but cheese can be frozen if you’re unsure!

StreamingCervix · 26/12/2022 17:15

Cheese is fine. Do any of them have fruit in, like cranberries? I tend to eat those ones earlier than the others, but not strictly to the use by date.

NewMoonPhase · 26/12/2022 17:15

All of em.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 26/12/2022 17:15

All of it. By its nature, cheese has already 'gone off'. Pass the crackers... 🧀

BelenaConhamHarter · 26/12/2022 17:20

'I'm the only serious cheese eater in the house'

You lucky thing. I have to hide cheese to make sure I get some.

Limer · 26/12/2022 17:22

All of them. And they'll all taste much better! Camembert only gets properly runny about a month after its use-by date.

ApolloandDaphne · 26/12/2022 17:30

I agree that they will all be fine. Cheese can last for a long time and will probably improve on keeping.

CatNutsRoastingByAnOpenFire · 26/12/2022 17:45

You cannot be a serious cheese eater and ask that question!

TimeForMeToF1y · 26/12/2022 18:00

What do you think might happen to them?

Do you routinely check the date on cheese, mould is pretty easy to spot and cut off
