If you're not having 'traditional' Christmas dinner...

We're not having a traditional Christmas dinner until tomorrow when all the relatives can get here. So today we're having a fairly ordinary (but hopefully still nice) dinner of garlic and Rosemary chicken, potato Dauphinoise and honey carrots. Probs just have ice cream for pud and no doubt graze our way through a bucketload of sweets. Will be cooking big Christmas dinner tomorrow instead.

If you're not having a 'typical' Christmas dinner today, what will you be having?

We had our Christmas yesterday....today DP is in the kitchen putting the finishing touches to something I have always wanted.....he's doing me a kids birthday tea party. Including jelly and ice-cream. I'm so excited.

Coq au vin with nice bread for dinner. We've had scrambled eggs, mushrooms and potato scones for breakfast, cheese and ham for lunch, and we'll have a lime cheesecake birthday cake this afternoon for DP. Quiet one this year and I'm really enjoying not being hot and stressed in the kitchen.

My husband & I are in New York. We’re about to go to a diner for a huge breakfast, Rockettes show later this afternoon where we’ll probably get hot dogs and popcorn, then we’ll be ordering a Chinese takeaway for dinner.

I just had mine - a yogurt. I’ve got the flu.

YellowAndGreenToBeSeen · 25/12/2022 14:39

I’ve just had a ‘prawn cocktail’ of lobster tails, rocket and slithers of brown bread and butter.

Later, I’ve got an eyewateringly expensive piece of fillet steak and I’ve made dauphinois potatoes. Green beans are currently marinading in olive oil and garlic - will stir fry them.

£25 bottle of red has been decanted and I’m drinking a glass of champagne.

Delicious and the lack of needing to stick to a timetable is heavenly.

Beef rendang last night, Clementine duck and noodles this afternoon, fish pie tomorrow. Feeling really good about it.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 25/12/2022 14:47

There weren't any joints of meat or whole chickens by the time DP got around to going shopping, so we're having steak. It was either that or chicken breasts, which I'll probably do show DP how to do it so I can stay on the sofa in my new fleece lined oodie thing under cats tomorrow by wrapping around a filling of ricotta, spinach, Basil or Parsley (if the bloody cat hasn't pruned the pot to absolute death) and pine nuts along with some prosciutto.

Oh, and instead of GF mince pies or Christmas pudding, I will be mostly inhaling pistachio gelato and lots of fresh fruit.

Halloumi tacos for us, just the three of us at home. Hosting family tomorrow and doing a buffet.

Beef , Dauphinoise potatoes, veg, Yorkshire pudding

Profiteroles, panacotta, or trifle

We are basically having the same but with Xmas pud for afters.

Tintackedsea · 25/12/2022 14:59

Roast pork etc
Chocolate mousse

I haven't eaten turkey in years. We usually have beef so pork makes a change.

MinnieMountain · 25/12/2022 15:08

I wish we were having something else. DH has got really good at doing roast chicken efficiently but for some reason “with the trimmings” is a huge amount of faff.

Echobelly · 25/12/2022 15:14

We're Jewish so don't celebrate, but today with did burgers and home-made oven chips, and using up a few leftover salads.

lynthesearesexpeople · 25/12/2022 15:22

I wish we were having anything other than a bloody roast. I find it such a faff for such little reward.

But dh has it intrenched that it’s christmas day so you must have a roast.

No one else is ever fussed about anything other than the potatoes. We have a crappy, cheapest we can find supermarket chicken as we are broke. Only dh eats the meat, me and the kids would rather just a pile of roasties and gravy. It’s bollocks really. Dh “cooks” - it’s just putting stuff in a hot place isn’t it - so I am stuck with the washing up.

There’s nothing remotely special about traditional Christmas dinner - never have understood why people get so invested. We are having an Indian take away - totally awesome banquet of delights!

Same here 😋

Furries · 25/12/2022 16:19

The day got cancelled this morning, so am on my own. Am probably going to do some nice sausages and some part-baked rolls in the air fryer, with a generous dollop of ketchup. I had also treated myself to 2 lobster and prawn cocktail starters, so will demolish one of them.

Am keeping my fingers crossed that traditional dinner will be all systems go for tomorrow.

LadyChamberlain · 25/12/2022 17:31

Pizzas this year.

We'll have a more traditional meal tomorrow when family visit. Doing the full works on the same day that DS are all hyped with presents etc was too much stress for me so we stopped a few years back.

Potnoodleforbrains · 25/12/2022 17:34

My younger son toad in the hole, me and eldest son spag bol. Husband picky bits. It's what we all want 😁

garlickypotatoes · 25/12/2022 21:10

All your alternative Christmas dinners sound lovely! Our garlic chicken and Dauphinoise potatoes were actually really nice but if it was up to me, I'd probably have TexMex!
