Are you avoiding busy places?

We have had one bug after another it seems! Including a horrid cough I had for 5 weeks Xmas Hmm. Finally, seems to be improving for Xmas with a bit of luck.
I’m a teacher and school finished Friday but now I have a week full of festive fun planned - cinema, lunches, city shopping trip. I am wondering if this is wise to do these things and risk being ill for Christmas and new year (we are going away).
My friend was surprised and thought I was being a complete germophobe when I mentioned the possibility so now I feel I’m over reacting…
I do want to go out and be festive and socialise after a stressful term but I just can’t face any more illness!!
Are you all carrying on as normal or limiting busy places?

Carrying on as normal.

ChessieDarling · 19/12/2022 08:46

I’m absolutely carrying on as normal. I’ll be damned if I have to miss another honest-to-goodness festive season!

Tessasanderson · 19/12/2022 08:48

Nope, dont give it a second thought. In fact i have never felt better. Cant remember the last time i had a cold and even covid wasnt that bad for me.

megletthesecond · 19/12/2022 08:48

Yes. I'd like a nice Christmas. I can't see family or go running if I'm ill.
I'm still the weirdo in the mask 😁.

BCBird · 19/12/2022 08:52

I am a teacher too.life hasn't been normal for me since Covid. I still avoid going places. I wear a mask and if I meet friends they do a test as do I. Despite everyone carrying in as if Covid has gone it hasn't. Perhaps you could wear masks and limit some of the stuff you were planning to do? .

I’m going to take a wild guess you don’t work in school or have school age DC?!
If you do can you tell me your secret please?

Thank you. It’s been a rough 3 years hasn’t it!
I think the last term has been the worst with actual illness. School has seen flu, strep and terrible coughs. It’s never ending. Maybe covid weakened my immune system as I never used to catch all the bugs like this.

I was carrying on pretty much as normal but have now tested positive for Covid and feel absolutely rotten!
Had planned to do the Christmas big shop on Thursday so it’s not looking great.
I’m really hoping it’s a very short lived and mild bout.( test didn’t look as positive as when I had it last but I feel a lot worse) . Now regretting the work things I dragged myself along to even though I didn’t really want to.

Harebrain · 19/12/2022 09:00

Having had all the festive fun curtailed for the last couple of years, we are revelling in the company of others.

UWhatNow · 19/12/2022 09:01

If you’re a teacher I’m pretty sure that your immune system has already battled the worst of everything going this term. A week of activities out in the open isn’t going to present anything you haven’t already come across in school. You can’t stop living life just out of fear.

APurpleSquirrel · 19/12/2022 09:07

Nope, doing as much as we want/like atm. Spent a good part of yesterday at a pantomime - it was great to be doing normal things. A few of my friends are teachers & they're carrying on as normal too.

123woop · 19/12/2022 09:08

Carrying on as normal but make sure you get enough sleep!

kingtamponthefurred · 19/12/2022 09:25

I tend to avoid busy places anyway, can't stand all those people milling around.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 19/12/2022 09:28

Carrying on as normal (big carol service this evening and shopping/trips out this week) but fully jabbed and taking Vit D religiously. I don't know if it helps but it was oncologist's advice so good enough for me.

pompomdaisy · 19/12/2022 09:30

There's quite a lot of research to suggest that one of the reasons childhood deaths have increased this year is due to the fact that increased shielding and isolation has weakened the immune system. We are biologically programmed to mix and mingle. Get on with life.

Hbh17 · 19/12/2022 09:30

Absolutely carry on as normal. Covid should have taught us that hiding away is both wrong & pointless. Maybe I'll get a cold, but so what? These things happen, it's not a big deal.

Luredbyapomegranate · 19/12/2022 09:31

Carrying on as normal.

Who knows what’s around the corner - I need some festive fun.

Spudlet · 19/12/2022 09:32

Carrying on as normal. I have a 6yo and volunteer in school, but somehow I seem to have dodged everything so far 🤞🤞 I also see lots of people in close proximity for work - again, so far so good… I mean I wouldn’t be getting too close to anyone coughing and spluttering away and I hand wash a lot, but generally I’m just trying to crack on now.

Was their advice to take Vit D for Covid or just generally?

Why did you think COVID ever would go away? That was never, ever going to happen, as even Xi Jinping has now been forced to concede. You are damaging your own health, not to mention your life, if you isolate yourself.

WindsChange · 19/12/2022 11:12

I don’t want this to become covid centric. It’s really not. It’s been the never ending battle of colds/ flu/ coughs/ strep that have done the rounds at school this term more than I have ever seen.
The research that it is covid that has affected our immunity is stronger than that which is blaming lockdowns by the way. Certainly fits my own personal anecdote too. I never got a lockdown as I was in school throughout but since having covid last summer I have had every bug going for the first time.

I think I’ll skip the Christmas city trip as that’s looking stressful all round anyway and still do lunches and cinema in our small town.

I’m being slightly cautious, as my mum is having chemo and I care for her, so don’t want to a) be will and unable to care for her b) pass anything on
if I can help it!

if not for this, I’d be carrying on as normal

voxnihili · 19/12/2022 11:32

I’m limiting going out. I work in a school
and DD is in reception. This term has been awful for bugs and we just need a break from it all. I’m not overly bothered about Covid, I just don’t want us all ill over Christmas. I also want DD healthy for going back to school.

We had to isolate for the entire Christmas holidays last year as I had covid. Rather than making me want to go out and make up for it this year, it made me realise we can still have a lovely time at home. We have a couple of things planned but not the amount I used to do pre-covid times.

SpotOnMyBot · 19/12/2022 11:48

As a teacher, I imagine you've probably had everything that's going by now! I hope you have a good break and can recharge before term starts.

My sister is a SN teacher and I don't think she's been 100% well all of this term!

tulips27 · 19/12/2022 11:52

I am but only because people have become a bit pushy and rude near me so I prefer it when it's less busy. And only for shopping/supermarkets, I'm not avoiding social stuff.
