Are you avoiding busy places?

We have had one bug after another it seems! Including a horrid cough I had for 5 weeks Xmas Hmm. Finally, seems to be improving for Xmas with a bit of luck.
I’m a teacher and school finished Friday but now I have a week full of festive fun planned - cinema, lunches, city shopping trip. I am wondering if this is wise to do these things and risk being ill for Christmas and new year (we are going away).
My friend was surprised and thought I was being a complete germophobe when I mentioned the possibility so now I feel I’m over reacting…
I do want to go out and be festive and socialise after a stressful term but I just can’t face any more illness!!
Are you all carrying on as normal or limiting busy places?

We’re just carrying on as normal. DS has caught a cold bug at school and isn’t well today and I’m hoping we don’t come down with it too, but you can’t live life in a vacuum.

Lcb123 · 19/12/2022 11:57

Normal. Life’s too short. I still always wash hands as much as possible though

Was their advice to take Vit D for Covid or just generally?

This was March 2020 so I think she was being specific about covid, but it's a good idea generally, especially between Oct-March. Side note, I also take vit c and zinc, haven't had covid and haven't had a cold for years.

HappyOnions · 19/12/2022 11:59

Not at all. Kids at school so no hope of avoiding things anyway.

It feels as if lockdown has reset some people's approach to illness and risk, so that avoiding activities due to the risk of catching mild illnesses now seems the norm. Completely personal choice but my choice is to live as fully as possible and trust my immune system to take care of me, as it did for decades before covid was on the scene. Obviously people who are more vulnerable may make different decisions.

Seasonofthewitch83 · 19/12/2022 12:04

Yep. DH caught Covid at his work party which is the first social thing he has been to in months.
We generally stay cautious this week so we dont end up sick for Christmas. Nowhere busy indoors - shopping done at 7am in a mask.

LlynTegid · 19/12/2022 12:22

Not avoiding busy places. However I do wear a face covering in shops and on public transport.

Oblomov22 · 19/12/2022 12:23

Nope.

Jellyjam36 · 19/12/2022 12:28

I've cancelled most of my plans for the past 3 weeks, because of having bug after bug. But I am due to give birth soon so I really dont want to get ill again.

Oldrosies · 19/12/2022 12:28

I know what you mean. I’ve never been germphobic before and was pretty relaxed about covid but this term has been a succession of coughs and colds (including covid again) and I’d really really like to avoid the flu and noro which are both going round while our immune systems are low before Christmas-I want to be able to spend it with my extended family and all be well.

So no, I’m not really avoiding anything but it is very much at the forefront of my mind and I’m encouraging kids to wash hands a bit more!

LindaEllen · 19/12/2022 12:46

I hadn't been, but I do plan to have a quiet week now. If I catch covid now, I won't be going to my family Christmas - as it's only 6 days away and my grandad was severely ill in hospital in March 2020 and I absolutely will not allow myself to be the reason that happens again.

I've done plenty of Christmassy things, and will continue after the day. Just need to make absolutely sure I'm covid free!

JamSandle · 19/12/2022 12:47

I'm just carrying on as I usually do. That said I tend to go to places when they're quieter when I can just because I get easily overwhelmed in crowds!

HS1990 · 19/12/2022 12:47

Love to be out as normal but the weather is a huge turn off. Can't be dragging two under 3s around in that, I'll be going insane.

Sartre · 19/12/2022 12:48

Living like normal. We’ve also had bug after bug for about two months solid, it’s been utterly relentless but I’m not dropping Christmas plans to try avoiding another bug.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 19/12/2022 12:50

I'm carrying on as normal. I'm exposed to bugs through work, commuting and through DS's school so I think the horse has bolted in terms of exposure to whatever is out there. The only thing to be gained by not doing fun social stuff is a huge drop in quality of life.

Zedcarz · 19/12/2022 12:56

Me and my kids have been suffering on and off for over a month.
Half the kids and teachers are off and they're still sending stupid attendance letters and giving prizes for the best attenders.
It's ruined loads of our pre Christmas plans, none of us can do anything and completely disorganised and i still have to work whilst nursing my kids.
Fed up with this, three really shitty miserable sick winters for us now

Kolakalia · 19/12/2022 13:05

Gosh no. The pandemic was hell, being kept away from others and my life shrinking down to being at home. Fully enjoying living life to the full again and mixing with others. Gigs, shopping centres, busy public events, soft plays, the germier the better!
