Can I cook a joint of beef in the slow cooker?

Planning on a roast beef dinner tomorrow, just wondering if I can cook it in the slow cooker instead of roasting it in the oven?

If so how? How long does it take? And can I use leftover bits in sandwiches like I would roast beef or will it be too soggy? 🤔

Im new to the slow cooker haha

I did this once and would again. I did it in red wine. It was unbelievable. I then used the red wine/juice mix to make the gravy

I would turn the beef half way though because I didnt want my wine to completely cover the beef and it was different at the top to the bottom

You will need a really fatty joint though for suculence, cant remember which bit I used now

I've done this successfully with brisket joints. I tend to enjoy the wet leftovers as Sloppy Joes the following day!

If you are on FB there are some great slower cooker groups for newbies to it.

Beef is delicious when cooked on LOW for about 6-8 hours in a slow cooker.

lurkinglittleladybug · 18/12/2022 13:37

The red wine sounds nice but I can’t use that tomorrow as MIL is coming for dinner and she doesn’t like alcohol in anything lol fussy eater 🙄… Would it be ok just in water? Should I season the water with something?

I made a slow cooker beef joint on Friday, it was lovely.

I seasoned and seared the joint to start with and then put to one side. Made a bed of potato, carrot and chunky chopped red onion with 4 cloves of garlic in the base of the slow cooker. I added red wine and chopped mushrooms 200ish ml of boiling water then added the joint and set the slow cooker on high for 1 hour 20 and then on low for 3-4 hours. Took the meat out to rest while I made roast potatoes and Yorkshire puddings.

For us the meat was slightly pink which is how we like it. It was bloody lovely if I do say so myself.

There are loads of great recipes online for it.

Yes you can use just water, or make a beef broth from the meat juices left in the pan after searing. The knorr stock pots are good to use too.

doodleygirl · 18/12/2022 13:42

You need to buy a piece of beef suitable for slow cooking such as brisket. If it’s a piece for roasting I wouldn’t use the slow cooker

stormsurfer · 18/12/2022 13:42

I cook my on low for about 8 hours. Put a chopped onion and some chopped carrots in with it and half cover with beef stock. Turn over half way through.

ouch321 · 18/12/2022 13:43

Why would you put water? Unless you mean stock pots dissolved in a little water.

You can put it in as is. I do sometimes with chicken breasts.

A slow cooker is just like putting the oven on 100 degrees basically. Due to lower temps any liquids won't burn off in the same way so bear that in mind for reducing liquids.

gamerchick · 18/12/2022 13:46

It's the only way I cook beef. I use this one.

You can use any joint of beef in a slow cooker. I've done top and silverside as well as brisket. Just cooked it longer. It was beautiful.

I use this recipe it's extremely spicy but oh my god it's amazing

I also cook it for way longer. Usually the day before I want it, it goes on low, so say Monday night is beef night. It'll go on 4pm Sunday and stay on til Monday tea time it's to die for

Do you use water in it or stock?

Absolutey, water, beef stock, bovril, marmite, or water mixed with horseradish or mustard or something.

Beer is nice but thats obviously alcohol again

You can use water or stock but only about half a cupfull, this is what I was advised on here and the beef was lovely like cutting through butter.

FangedFrisbee · 18/12/2022 13:51

@lurkinglittleladybug I cook it in stock.

I had no idea, I always thought you had to fill up the slow cooker with liquid 😮

So did I but it creates its own steam when cooking ,honestly it's a game changer !

gamerchick · 18/12/2022 13:56

It's recommended to have liquid just covering the bottom of the pot to protect it but you don't need to put a lot in if you don't want to.

bellac11 · 18/12/2022 13:58

I always use little half onion or garlic 'stands' when I put some meat in the slow cooker, then I might put the wine or stock or whatever up to a certain level

ReggaeRocks · 18/12/2022 14:15

You’ve all made me very hungry!

lurkinglittleladybug · 18/12/2022 14:26

Thanks guys , I will try this 😁

SamphirethePogoingStickerist · 18/12/2022 14:32

If you use carrot and onion, garlic etc as a trivet you just make sure that your stock/ water covers the veg. Then your beef steam roasts and the veg cooks and can be mashed into the juices for great gravy.

Cook on low for 5 hours, could stay in for up to 8

Try it on high for 3-6 hours - it works but isn't quite as soft.

MenaiMna · 18/12/2022 14:38

I do a 800-900g brisket cut with a dry rub (mystard, garlic, salt & pepoer), no additional liquid. 1 hr on high then min 3 hrs on low, turn it a couple of times. When it's done the liquid that's created makes amazing jus for a gravy base. Absolutely lush.
