How many people do you spend Christmas Day with?

If you host, or if you visit someone else - how many people are there sitting down at the table for dinner? Do you have any other visitors drop in?

We will have 7 this year and the most we have had is 10 (all adults no kids). A friend commented this is a big group to cook for and I'm wondering how it varies for other people. We don't have people drop in either, everyone is there for the day. She has just the 3 of them - her, partner and child. That sounds more cosy and less stressful, but equally the Christmas quiz and board games are a big part of the day for me and that requires more people ☺️

1 (DH), unless you count the dog!

Tigger85 · 18/12/2022 11:01

Just us and our 2 children, if I'm working just my partner and children but he will plate up a meal for me for when I'm home.

Pasithean · 18/12/2022 11:02

Me dH. I will cook Christmas dinner for dH I don’t eat.

Ourlittleharmonica · 18/12/2022 11:03

8 of us, weather permitting

PumpkinTruffle · 18/12/2022 11:03

14 of us. My family and other halves. Going to be hectic to say the least.

Natsku · 18/12/2022 11:04

We visit FIL for lunch and depending on when we go (its not a set time, the food is cooked to be ready in the morning and people just heat up platefuls when they want) there might be 6 other people (plus our 4), or 3 other people or just 2 (or possibly more, if neighbours come round). If BIL and his family don't come there we'll probably visit them as well before we go home to have our dinner.

JaninaDuszejko · 18/12/2022 11:51

5-12 people in the house for several days. Five is just our nuclear family so 1 or 2 extra doesn't make a difference but the 12 was hard work. Fine for a single meal but getting up on Boxing Day and having to prepare 3 meals for 12 people after doing Christmas Day was shit. Usually Boxing Day there's enough left overs to just be able to chill but that year there wasn't.

Frenchfancy · 18/12/2022 11:55

Between 8 and 12. 8 this year, might be up to 11 next year. Youngest is 16 others are Adults.

How do you do your Christmas quiz? We take it in turns to be quiz master, it's me this year.

deeperthanallroses · 18/12/2022 11:58

20-40 on average. We aren’t usually hosts! There was about 35 yesterday at one Christmas and 20 today at my husbands family one. A small one of maybe 14 on Christmas Day and a bigger family one of I expect 40ish on the 27th. People all bring stuff.

Same here. I don't have much family and have never had big Christmases so I'm used to it. The thought of spending the whole day with a ton of other people would do my head in.

AuntieMarys · 18/12/2022 12:03

3 adults here. We eat out.
I don't like big gatherings

Ohuhu · 18/12/2022 12:11

Usually 5 or 6 of us for dinner (depending on whether my bro brings a +1), and my uncle pops by for brunch.

Deadringer · 18/12/2022 12:12

We just have Christmas day by ourselves, thats me and dh and our 5 dc, mostly adults so thats enough tbh. We go to our local hotel bar on Christmas eve, and there are usually lots of our family there so we get to see them then. I would hate to host at xmas I would feel very pressured to have everything perfect. I love it being just us.

SpinningFloppa · 18/12/2022 12:13

Just me and my children but I prefer it this way

underneaththeash · 18/12/2022 12:15

Usually 8 or 9. I don’t find that too difficult to cook for as we’re 5 usually.

RewildingAmbridge · 18/12/2022 12:17

This year 6 adults 3dc Christmas day, boxing Day going to PIL and there will be 10 adults and 1 DC, more of a buffet type affair but people there most of the day.
Most I've hosted at home is 9 adults 3DC it's a lot but frankly it's just volume, once you're cooking a roast it's just a few extra potatoes and veg etc

lollipoprainbow · 18/12/2022 12:17

Not this again 🙄 just the three us as most of our family are dead, no chaotic Christmas, board games, loads of presents, fun and laughter like everyone else in these various threads seems to have. Stop making people feel bad for not having large extended families.

megosaurusrex · 18/12/2022 12:20

We go to my in-laws every year. 7 adults and 3 children in a relatively small house. Starting to find it a bit much. Not complaining though as I'm really fortunate to have family to spend it with.

MintJulia · 18/12/2022 12:22

Five of us go for a long walk in the morning, then just DS & me for Christmas lunch.

CaveyWavey · 18/12/2022 12:29

There will be 11 of us from 12.30 onwards. 2 of those are children, 1 teenager and 8 adults. PIL will pop in for a couple of hours in the morning to have breakfast, then they are coming to us on Boxing Day, so there will be 7 of us that day.

sneezums · 18/12/2022 12:31

Only 5 this year but I have had up to 12 and as I'm used to cooking regularly for 6+ it doesn't seem that much hassle - worst it is getting it all served and hot

I'm not. If you don't like the post, scroll past.

I have a tiny family myself, just my mum - so maybe don't judge what you don't know. The other people coming are my partners parents, siblings and grandparents. I also said I think a small Christmas Day can be just as nice, I've had plenty of them before my partner.
