How many people do you spend Christmas Day with?

If you host, or if you visit someone else - how many people are there sitting down at the table for dinner? Do you have any other visitors drop in?

We will have 7 this year and the most we have had is 10 (all adults no kids). A friend commented this is a big group to cook for and I'm wondering how it varies for other people. We don't have people drop in either, everyone is there for the day. She has just the 3 of them - her, partner and child. That sounds more cosy and less stressful, but equally the Christmas quiz and board games are a big part of the day for me and that requires more people ☺️

@ErinAndTonic my mum died two months ago and my dd's dad is nc with his family so we miss out there too. Not your fault I know but these posts really make me feel miserable. You're right I shouldn't read them.

There will be 5 this year, there were 7 for the last couple of years. Most people I know have about 6

AlwaysFullOfQuestions22 · 18/12/2022 12:45

I'm sorry to hear that and I hope you're able to still have a nice Christmas with your loved ones. I'm sorry too because it touched a nerve with me - my dad walked out on me so I've never met that side of the family as well as losing relatives on my mums side too, so although I'm lucky to have my partners side, I feel the same way you do often at Christmas time. Apologies for snapping 💕

@ErinAndTonic no need to apologise ! I'm in the wrong not you Flowers

Ringmaster27 · 18/12/2022 12:53

This year will be just me, 3 DCs and my exH (DC’s dad) at my house.
Boxing Day is the crazy one. Huge family get together with my maternal family. Usually 35+ people all at my eldest cousin’s house.

Kenworthington · 18/12/2022 12:56

It’s usually 6, but this year just 4 as ds1 and his fiancé aren’t coming down (due to work) I’m gutted tbh I love a big Xmas the more the merrier

NoelNoNoel · 18/12/2022 12:59

5 of us, me, 3 adult DC and my DH.

BuffaloCauliflower · 18/12/2022 12:59

I think we’re 14 on Christmas Day this year? Possibly 18-20 for Christmas Eve (which is a big thing in our family too) this is a pretty standard number, I do think this is an usually large number though.

whatthejuice · 18/12/2022 13:00

Usually between 8-14 😊
I love a big Christmas with kids running around

NegroniLover · 18/12/2022 13:02

It varies for us & is mostly 5 but this year we'll have 15 for dinner & I've nothing sorted yet!! It'll be fine....it'll be fine....

SpentDandelion · 18/12/2022 13:09

Just me and two sons, which will be nice. I used to host large family groups for years, but much easier and less stressful just the 3 of us.
I don't like games etc it's not my thing. I prefer some nice gentle music and abit of peace.

BuffaloCauliflower · 18/12/2022 13:09

To add - we always cook for this number (me and mum at mums, with others helping) so it doesn’t seem big to us. We have it down to a fine art. We do a big Christmas Eve buffet too.

cptartapp · 18/12/2022 13:10

10 of us, our family of four and the rest are DH side. I have none of my family I ever see anymore. Parents are dead, LC with brother and the rest all over the country.
BIL has no parents either so PIL have both their DC and all GC to themselves every single Christmas and major celebration. And still find something to moan about.

Oldraver · 18/12/2022 13:10

There are four of us. Myself, OH and my/our two boys

In the 38 years since I left home we have had two visits from MIL and two from my parents, though DP:s are threatening to come next year as holiday insurance for 6 weeks over Christmas is getting too much

It's absolutely perfect for us though I have to say I'd really thought DS1 would have gone his own way by now

FortyFacedFuckers · 18/12/2022 13:10

16 usually for the meal, 3/4 pop in earlier then leave for dinner elsewhere.

DramaAlpaca · 18/12/2022 13:12

NoelNoNoel · 18/12/2022 12:59

5 of us, me, 3 adult DC and my DH.

Same here. It's how we like it

Chikapu · 18/12/2022 13:13

1 and a cat, it's perfect :)

OldTinHat · 18/12/2022 13:13

All on my own this year.

I used to host. Used to be 13 of us but after bereavements and moving away, it's just me now.

Yarrawonga · 18/12/2022 13:13

It varies but 10-12 isn't uncommon. Occasionally less, occasionally more.

We have had to do children first when there has been a lot of adults.

grayhairdontcare · 18/12/2022 13:14

At its peak in the 90's we hosted 20 adults and 2 children.
This year on Christmas Day it's just the two of us.
I can't wait.

Smileandtheworldsmileswithyou · 18/12/2022 13:16

12 this year. Usually 8, but can be more and changes each year a little bit.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 18/12/2022 13:17

9 this year

12 last year
